Slate Auto’s electric pickup is real, but the often-repeated “$20,000 electric truck” description is no longer an accurate summary of its price. Slate unveiled the vehicle in Long Beach, California, on April 24, 2025, describing a starting price of under $20,000 after the then-available $7,500 federal EV tax credit. The company has since announced a starting MSRP of $24,950 before destination, taxes, registration and other fees.
The result is a small, deliberately simple electric vehicle that can begin life as a two-seat pickup and later be converted into a five-seat SUV. It is not a Cybertruck rival in size or towing ability. Slate’s pitch is different: build a relatively affordable EV, leave out expensive equipment many buyers may not need, and let owners customize the body and cabin.

The $20,000 Slate Truck price needs an important correction
Slate’s original announcement used the “under $20,000” figure only after applying a $7,500 federal clean-vehicle tax credit. That federal credit is not generally available for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, although limited transition rules may apply to qualifying binding contracts made by that date.
On June 24, 2026, Slate announced the actual starting MSRP for its base truck, called the Blank Slate: $24,950. That is the vehicle price, not the amount a buyer should expect to pay at the dealership or during checkout.

| Price item | Amount or status |
|---|---|
| Blank Slate starting MSRP | $24,950 |
| Destination charge | $1,450 |
| Taxes, title, license and registration | Extra |
| Documentation and government fees | Extra where applicable |
| Optional equipment and conversion kits | Extra |
| Federal EV credit for normal 2026 acquisitions | Generally unavailable |
Adding only the destination charge brings the advertised total to $26,400 before taxes and other fees. Buyers should therefore treat $24,950 as an entry MSRP, not an out-the-door price.
What Slate Auto is building
The Slate Truck is a compact, rear-wheel-drive electric pickup with a single motor mounted at the rear. Its base configuration has two seats, a five-foot cargo bed and a simple interior. Conversion parts can turn it into a five-seat Squareback SUV, a Fastback SUV, an Open Air vehicle or a Cargo configuration.
This modular approach is central to the product. Slate is not selling one fixed body style with a long list of expensive factory options. It is selling a basic platform that owners can adapt with accessories, panels and kits. A buyer might initially use it as a work-oriented pickup, then add rear seating and SUV equipment later.

Slate’s current figures are projections, not final EPA-certified ratings. The company says the 205-mile range estimate is based on an approximation of the EPA test cycle. Because the truck remains in preproduction, specifications can change before customer deliveries.
| Specification | Slate’s current projection |
|---|---|
| Drive layout | Rear-wheel drive |
| Motor | Single rear-mounted motor |
| Motor output | 135 kW |
| Range | 205 miles projected; not an official EPA rating |
| Payload | Approximately 1,550 pounds |
| Towing capacity | Approximately 2,000 pounds |
| Length | 174.6 inches |
| Width | 70.6 inches |
| Height | 68 inches |
| Cargo bed | Five feet; 35.1 cubic feet |
| Frunk | Seven cubic feet |
Those numbers position the Slate as a light-duty urban and suburban vehicle rather than a full-size electric pickup. Its projected towing capacity is far below what buyers may expect from a Ford F-150 Lightning, Chevrolet Silverado EV or Tesla Cybertruck. Its smaller dimensions should make it easier to park and maneuver, but the compact footprint also limits its utility for large trailers, heavy equipment and family-sized cargo.

A deliberately bare cabin
The base truck is minimalist in ways that will appeal to some buyers and frustrate others. Slate says it will use hand-crank windows and analog HVAC controls. There is no built-in infotainment system in the conventional sense. Instead, owners can use a phone or tablet, with optional equipment such as speakers available for those who want a more complete audio setup.
The vehicle also does not come with factory paint in the traditional manner. Customers can personalize the exterior with wraps and other accessories. That strategy may reduce manufacturing complexity and give owners more control over appearance, but it also means the advertised price does not represent a fully equipped, luxury-style EV.
Potential buyers should think carefully about the cost of adding the features they consider essential. A phone mount, speakers, weather equipment, upgraded seating, exterior panels and SUV conversion parts may turn the low starting price into a considerably higher purchase price. The simplicity is intentional; it is not evidence that the truck includes every feature found in a conventional modern pickup.
How the conversion system works
Slate’s base vehicle is a two-seat pickup, but the company intends it to support several configurations:
- Pickup: the standard two-seat truck with an open five-foot bed.
- Squareback SUV: a more upright enclosed configuration with room for up to five occupants.
- Fastback SUV: a lower, sloped-roof SUV variation.
- Open Air: a more exposed configuration aimed at recreational use.
- Cargo: a version focused on carrying equipment and goods.
This is one of the Slate’s more distinctive ideas. Instead of replacing the vehicle when needs change, an owner could theoretically purchase the relevant conversion equipment. The practical value will depend on kit prices, installation requirements, durability and how easily the parts can be changed. Slate has not made the base MSRP an all-in price for every configuration.

Is Slate really a Tesla competitor?
Calling Slate a Tesla competitor is useful only in a broad industry sense. The comparison comes from the companies’ attempts to make electric vehicles more accessible, and from the fact that Tesla has not delivered a conventional $25,000 vehicle to the market.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The two products are otherwise very different. Slate is smaller, slower in the market’s performance hierarchy, less powerful and far less equipped than a Tesla Cybertruck. It is aimed at buyers who prioritize purchase price, basic transportation, compact dimensions and customization. The Cybertruck is a large, high-performance electric pickup with substantially greater capability and a much higher price structure.
Slate’s more relevant competition may be used gasoline pickups, compact crossovers and inexpensive small cars. Its success will depend less on beating Tesla at truck specifications and more on whether it can deliver a dependable, practical EV at a price close to its advertised entry point.
Who is backing Slate Auto?
Slate Auto is backed by Jeff Bezos’ family office, along with investors including TWG Global, General Catalyst and Slauson & Co. That does not mean Amazon is producing or selling the truck as an Amazon vehicle. Bezos’ personal investment and Amazon’s corporate automotive business should not be treated as the same thing.
TechCrunch reported in June 2026 that Slate had raised approximately $1.4 billion across three funding rounds. Slate also says it plans to assemble the truck in Warsaw, Indiana, with an investment of nearly $400 million and more than 2,000 projected jobs. Those factory and employment figures are company plans, not proof of completed high-volume production.

Reservations, preorders and delivery timing
Slate’s original reservation program used a refundable $50 reservation that provided priority to preorder. The company has since moved to a preorder system requiring a $300 nonrefundable deposit. Existing reservation holders are eligible for a $250 deposit. The deposit is credited toward the final purchase price, but it is not the same as a fully refundable reservation.
Slate currently expects first deliveries in late 2026, with company press material specifying the fourth quarter of 2026. That target should be viewed as a projection until production vehicles reach customers. As with any new automaker, the important tests will be final certification, factory ramp-up, service support, parts availability and whether the projected specifications survive the transition from prototype to production.
What could make or break the Slate Truck
The Slate’s strongest argument is straightforward: a smaller battery, a less complicated cabin and a limited set of standard features could make an EV less expensive to build and own. The truck’s compact size, usable bed and potential five-seat conversion also give it more flexibility than a typical two-seat commuter vehicle.
The risks are just as concrete. The $24,950 MSRP is not a delivered price, the federal credit cannot normally be used for 2026 acquisitions, and accessories could add materially to the cost. The 205-mile range is still a projection. A minimalist cabin may be attractive to one buyer and unacceptable to another. Finally, Slate must establish a service and repair network for a vehicle from a new manufacturer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor now, the Slate Truck is best understood as a preproduction compact electric platform with a projected 205-mile range and a $24,950 starting MSRP. It is not a $20,000 truck for ordinary 2026 buyers, and it is not a direct substitute for a full-size electric pickup.

FAQ
How much does the Slate electric truck cost?
The base two-seat Blank Slate has a starting MSRP of $24,950. Slate lists a separate $1,450 destination charge, while taxes, title, registration, documentation fees, optional equipment and conversion kits cost extra.
Can buyers still use the $7,500 federal EV tax credit to make the Slate cost under $20,000?
Generally no. The IRS says the federal new clean-vehicle credit is unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, subject to limited transition rules for qualifying binding contracts made by that date. The original under-$20,000 figure depended on that credit.
How many people can the Slate Truck carry?
The base vehicle is a two-seat pickup. Slate plans conversion kits that can turn it into a five-seat Squareback or Fastback SUV, along with Open Air and Cargo configurations.

The Bottom Line
The Slate Truck is an unusually focused attempt to lower the cost and complexity of an electric vehicle. Its compact rear-wheel-drive layout, 205-mile projected range and convertible body could suit buyers who want basic transportation rather than a luxury pickup. But the headline price needs updating: the current starting MSRP is $24,950, and the $7,500 federal-credit assumption behind the original “under $20,000” claim generally does not apply to normal 2026 deliveries. With destination and options included, the real purchase price will be higher.
