Better Than the LFA V10? Toyota’s GR GT Twin-Turbo V8 Explained

The twin-turbo V8 belongs to Toyota’s GR GT, not the Lexus LFA. Here’s how the new hybrid road car differs from the original LFA’s naturally aspirated V10, and why a clip alone cannot establish which sounds better.

The twin-turbo V8 in the clip is not from a Lexus LFA. Toyota’s new GR GT road car is the V8-powered model; the original production LFA is known for a naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V10. Whether the GR GT sounds better is a matter of taste—and a fair comparison depends on which car and recording you’re hearing.

Which car has the twin-turbo V8?

Toyota announced the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 for the GR GT in December 2025. The road car pairs it with a single electric motor in a hybrid drivetrain. Toyota also announced the GR GT3, a separate GT3 race-car project with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8; it should not be confused with the hybrid road-going GR GT. Toyota’s GR GT and GR GT3 announcement gives the planned powertrain details.

Toyota’s figures for the GR GT—at least 650 PS and at least 850 Nm of system output and torque—are development targets, not final certified production specifications. The company said development was continuing and targeted a launch around 2027, with details subject to change.

What does the Lexus LFA actually sound like?

The original production Lexus LFA has a naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V10, engine designation 1LR-GUE—not a turbocharged V8. Lexus lists a maximum engine speed of 9,000 rpm. Toyota’s 2009 LFA announcement identifies the engine, while the Lexus LFA model page describes its high-revving character and acoustic development.

Lexus says its engineers shaped the sound by tuning the car’s multi-stage exhaust. In a 2010 feature, the company described the intended progression from an idle rumble to the V10’s high-revving wail. That is Lexus’s account of the design goal, rather than an independent measurement of sound quality. Lexus: “In Pursuit of the Perfect Pitch”.

What is the newer Lexus LFA Concept?

The LFA name also appears on a different vehicle: Toyota introduced the Lexus LFA Concept in December 2025 as a battery-electric sports-car concept, developed alongside the GR GT and GR GT3. Toyota’s announcement calls it “a BEV sports car concept model”; it does not identify a V8 for the concept. Toyota’s LFA Concept announcement explains its concept status.

That makes the headline’s engine attribution easy to misread: the original LFA is the V10, the LFA Concept is electric, and Toyota’s announced twin-turbo V8 belongs to the GR GT and GR GT3.

Can the GR GT sound better than the LFA?

There is no objective winner established by the published specifications. The LFA offers the character of a naturally aspirated V10 engineered to rev high; the GR GT combines a twin-turbo V8 with hybrid assistance. Those are meaningful mechanical differences, but they do not prove which car a listener will prefer.

A video comparison can also be misleading if the clips differ in important ways. Before judging, check whether the footage shows the GR GT road car or GR GT3, and whether each recording is a stationary rev, flyby, onboard acceleration, or track pass. Engine load, gear, microphone position, exhaust and intake tuning, and recording or playback processing all affect what reaches your ears. Toyota’s announcement and Lexus’s sound feature do not provide a controlled, matched recording comparison.

What the published figures do—and do not—tell you

Why the LFA remains a useful comparison

The LFA is relevant because Lexus made its V10’s acoustic character part of the car’s identity, not because it shares the GR GT’s engine. Toyota announced a worldwide production limit of 500 original LFAs in 2010. The launch-era U.S. MSRP was $375,000, excluding delivery, processing, and handling; that is a historical price, not a current valuation. Lexus USA’s 2010 pricing announcement.
