How to choose a windshield shade
Confirm fit before comparing features
Check the shade’s vehicle application against your car’s year, make, and model. Then consider whether it leaves gaps around the windshield edges, rear-view mirror, or sensors. A model-specific shade may cover the glass more completely, but typically costs more. Balance coverage, setup, and storage
A shade that fits edge to edge can be more useful than one that is simply quick to open. Consider whether it stays in place without the visors, how it folds or rolls for storage, and whether its frame or tips could touch the dashboard or occupants. The Car and Driver comparison found meaningful trade-offs across these factors, but did not measure temperature differences; its picks therefore should not be read as proven rankings for cooling performance.

What the comparison does—and does not—establish
Car and Driver’s test compared fit and practical use on one vehicle, a 2023 Hyundai Santa Cruz. It explicitly did not measure cabin-temperature differences, noting that time, cloud cover, interior materials, and other factors make accurate readings difficult. The results support comparisons of fit, setup, and storage; they do not establish a measured temperature reduction or independently verified UV-blocking percentage for these products.
Use a removable shade only while parked
Remove and stow a windshield shade before driving. In a 2006 interpretation, NHTSA warned that a front windshield screen could substantially impede a driver’s view and noted that states may regulate vehicle operation and use. The agency’s letter states: “Driving with a lowered shade would be unsafe, as the view through the windshield could be substantially impeded.” Read NHTSA’s June 19, 2006 interpretation.

Separately, a 1995 NHTSA interpretation said the agency had issued no safety standards specifically for window shades sold separately from vehicles.
