The best anti-theft setup for your car is usually a set of complementary layers, not one supposedly unbeatable device. Keep the vehicle’s factory security and good locking habits in place, then choose an added system for the risk you want to address: an immobilizer makes unauthorized starting harder, a visible lock can deter or delay, a signal-blocking pouch helps with a keyless-entry relay threat, and a tracker can help locate a car after it is stolen. None guarantees that a vehicle will not be taken.
There is no universal best model established by the available evidence. The right choice depends on what your vehicle already has, whether a device fits it, how easy it is to use consistently, and whether it depends on installation, monitoring, network coverage, or recurring fees.
How to choose an anti-theft system
Start by identifying the job you need done. Prevention, visible deterrence, warning, key-signal protection, and recovery are different functions; a tracker, for example, is not a substitute for a device that makes starting or moving the car harder.
- Check what is already fitted. Consult the owner’s manual, vehicle manufacturer or dealer, and a qualified installer if needed. Many vehicles have factory security, including an immobilizer; avoid paying for a duplicate without understanding the existing system.
- Match the device to the car. Compatibility and installation requirements can vary by make, model, and year. Aftermarket immobilizers may need vehicle-specific professional installation.
- Consider daily-use friction. A physical lock only helps when it is fitted, and a signal-blocking pouch only helps if the fob is kept inside it and the pouch still blocks the signal.
- Check dependencies and cost. For trackers, ask about coverage, location-update frequency, power or battery, installation, and any recurring service fee. For alarms and monitored services, clarify what triggers an alert and who receives it.
- Check local advice and requirements. Ratings, police guidance, and insurer rules vary by location. UK Sold Secure guidance, for instance, is not a universal rating system.
For routine precautions, NHTSA advises locking the car, closing windows, taking the key, and not leaving the vehicle running unattended. See NHTSA’s vehicle theft prevention guidance.

Compare the main types of vehicle anti-theft systems
| System | Main role | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Immobilizer | Prevention: makes starting without the proper key, fob, or activation harder. | Whether the vehicle already has one; compatibility and installation for an aftermarket unit. |
| Visible physical lock | Deterrence or delay: adds an obvious obstacle, such as a steering-wheel lock. | Fit for the vehicle, ease of routine use, and any local security rating. |
| Alarm or warning | Alert: draws attention to an unauthorized attempt to enter or steal the vehicle. | What sets it off and who can hear or receive the alert; an alarm alone is not established as theft prevention. |
| Key-fob signal blocker | Risk reduction: helps protect against relay theft of keyless-entry signals. | Whether the pouch blocks the signal and whether the fob is consistently stored inside it. |
| GPS recovery tracker | Recovery: can help reveal a stolen vehicle’s location. | Network coverage, update frequency, power, installation, and subscription or service fees. |
Immobilizers: make unauthorized starting harder
An immobilizer prevents or complicates starting unless the appropriate key, fob, or activation is present. NHTSA notes that some systems use chips in ignition keys or interrupt electricity or fuel to the engine. Check whether your car already has a factory immobilizer before considering an aftermarket one.
An aftermarket immobilizer is not necessarily a plug-and-play purchase. Confirm vehicle compatibility and ask whether a qualified, vehicle-specific installation is needed. South Australia Police lists immobilizers among security measures and advises treating additional security as a complement to the vehicle’s own protection: South Australia Police: Prevent car theft.

Visible locks: a steering-wheel lock for a car
A steering-wheel lock is a visible physical deterrent that can also add time and effort for someone attempting to take the vehicle. Pedal and gear locks are other physical options. Their practical value depends on whether the device fits the vehicle and whether the owner will attach and remove it each time.
Police.uk recommends physical security locks and points UK readers toward products tested by Sold Secure. That is UK-specific guidance; no current rating for a particular model is established here. Choose a device based on fit and local guidance rather than assuming all locks offer the same protection. See Police.uk’s guidance on preventing car and vehicle theft.

It is one of those useful car gifts that feels thoughtful without being overly personal. Whether you are shopping for car accessories for men, locks with keys, or a small lock with real everyday value, this is a simple gift that can be appreciated long after the occasion.
Alarms: a warning, not a guarantee
An audible alarm, such as a horn, can draw attention to an unauthorized attempt to enter or steal a vehicle. Victoria Police includes alarms among possible security measures, alongside other options such as OBD blocks, signal blockers, and trackers: Victoria Police: Preventing motor vehicle theft.
An alarm’s role is warning. The cited guidance does not establish that an alarm by itself prevents a theft, so consider it as one part of a broader setup rather than a replacement for locking habits or other security.

- Cro-moly steel construction resist sawing, prying, hammering, and freon attacks

Keyless cars: reduce relay-theft exposure
In a relay theft, equipment relays a key fob’s signal so the car behaves as though the key is nearby. Police.uk recommends keeping keys away from the vehicle and using a screened or signal-blocking pouch. Check periodically that the pouch still blocks the signal, and reprogram keys on a secondhand vehicle when appropriate. These steps address relay risk specifically; they do not replace other security layers.
See Police.uk’s keyless-entry and vehicle-security advice for its local guidance.

Trackers: help with recovery after a theft
A GPS recovery tracker can help reveal a stolen vehicle’s location to law enforcement and may help officers catch a thief. It does not physically prevent theft, and South Australia Police describes tracking as secondary to the vehicle’s own security.
Before choosing one, confirm that its network covers where the vehicle is used and ask how often it updates location, how it is powered, how installation works, and whether service requires a recurring fee. A tracker’s usefulness depends on those practical details as well as the recovery function it offers.
What recent theft figures do—and do not—tell you
NHTSA’s current vehicle-theft prevention page reports that more than 650,000 U.S. vehicles were stolen in 2025, or one vehicle every 48 seconds that year. Separately, a July 1, 2025 NHTSA consumer alert reported more than 850,700 U.S. vehicles stolen in 2024 and a 17% decline from 2023 to 2024. These are figures for different reference years, not contradictory estimates for the same year: NHTSA’s prevention page and NHTSA’s July 2025 consumer alert.
For historical UK context, a Home Office report published January 3, 2016 said vehicle crime had fallen 80% since 1995 and estimated electronic immobilizers accounted for 25–50% of the decrease in stolen vehicles through 2013. The report also identified other contributing factors. These historical figures are not a current estimate or a prediction of what an immobilizer will do for an individual car: UK Home Office, Reducing criminal opportunity: vehicle security and vehicle crime.

- Use the factory security and good habits first. Lock the vehicle, close its windows, take the key, and do not leave it running unattended.
- Confirm existing equipment. Check for an immobilizer and other factory security before adding devices.
- Add a layer for the specific gap. Consider an aftermarket immobilizer for starting protection, a visible lock for deterrence, an alarm for warning, a signal-blocking pouch for keyless relay risk, or a tracker for recovery.
- Verify fit, installation, and local guidance. Ask the vehicle manufacturer or a qualified installer about compatibility; check local police advice and any insurer requirements rather than assuming a discount or rating applies.
- Make the routine sustainable. Choose devices you will use correctly and consistently, and keep up with any service, battery, or signal-blocking checks they require.
Police advice from the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia addresses overlapping but not identical contexts. Follow local police, insurer, and vehicle-manufacturer guidance for your location and vehicle.
