For HVAC/R evacuation, the best choice is a dedicated digital micron vacuum gauge whose published accuracy covers the pressure range you need, with 1-micron-class resolution, contamination protection and a documented calibration method. Connect it on the system, away from the pump, so it measures the system’s vacuum rather than only the pump-side hose. Use the equipment manufacturer’s evacuation target; 500 microns is a common rule of thumb, not a universal pass mark.
What a vacuum gauge measures—and which type you need
A dedicated micron gauge measures deep vacuum directly, typically in microns of mercury. A conventional manifold gauge calibrated in inches of mercury (inHg) is useful for other HVAC/R work but is not the main instrument for verifying a deep evacuation. For evacuation, choose a gauge with a stated low-pressure accuracy specification and use it within the conditions specified by its manufacturer.
Do not choose by resolution alone. A display that changes in 1-micron increments does not necessarily measure within 1 micron of the true pressure. Accuracy, pressure range and temperature conditions determine how to interpret the reading.
How to compare digital micron gauges
Compare each gauge at the pressure and temperature where you will use it. Accuracy formulas and bands are not interchangeable: for example, “5% of reading ±5 microns” is not the same as ±5 microns throughout the range. The following specifications come from manufacturers’ current product pages; they are not independent comparative test results.

Accuracy, resolution and calibration
When comparing specifications, match both pressure and temperature. A gauge’s stated accuracy may apply only to part of its range; outside that band, the cited figure may not apply. CPS cites NIST-standard calibration, while BluVac+ LTE describes field calibration and Mastercool describes self-calibration. Follow the gauge’s manual and keep calibration records when traceability matters.
Contamination protection and practical features
Oil or liquid contamination can compromise a sensor. Consider whether the design includes an oil sensor or resistance to oil mist, and keep the sensor protected during setup. Also check the gauge’s overpressure tolerance, response time, battery life and connection arrangement in its manual or product documentation. A wireless display or logging feature can help when readings need to be watched remotely, but it does not substitute for accurate measurement or correct placement.

- Achieve highly accurate micron readings by connecting the MG44 directly to the system port; the innovative reversible angled coupler ensures a secure fit and reliable seal even in tight or awkward spaces
- With 3 ways to use, Stand Alone, Job Link System App & SMAN Manifold Screen, this micron wireless vacuum gauge is built to make your work easier
- Confidently pull and verify deep vacuums with precision measurements from 50 to 2000 microns displayed clearly on the backlit LCD and view by rate, bar graph or rate meter to ensure accuracy
- Long battery life (40 hours typical alkaline), wireless range of 1000 feet (305 meters) line of sight and radio frequency of 2.4 GHz
Where to connect the gauge
Connect the gauge on the system and as far back from the pump as practical. A pump-side reading may not represent the pressure at a distant part of the circuit, especially when restrictions, hose leaks or long connections affect flow. Fieldpiece recommends measuring on the system and placing the gauge as far back as practical. Use short, vacuum-rated hoses and sound isolation valves, and protect the sensor from oil and liquid contamination.
How to evacuate and check for pressure rise
- Check the equipment manufacturer’s instructions for its evacuation target and requirements. Do not assume that 500 microns is the correct target for every system.
- Connect the micron gauge at the system, as far from the pump as practical, using short vacuum-rated hoses and sound isolation valves.
- Pull a vacuum and watch the gauge until the specified target is reached.
- Isolate the system from the pump and observe the micron trend. The isolation step allows you to assess the system’s pressure rise rather than continuing to measure evacuation by the pump.
Fieldpiece notes that 500 microns is a popular rule of thumb but says to check the system manufacturer’s manual for the recommended pressure. Its technical guidance describes a slow rise as consistent with moisture continuing to boil off and a faster rise as an indication of a possible system leak. These patterns are diagnostic clues, not proof; use additional testing to identify the cause.
