Polaris advises riders not to depend on ordinary eyeglasses or sunglasses for eye protection; it recommends shatterproof goggles or a shatterproof helmet face shield. Check the exact product’s protective labeling and your local requirements rather than assuming any one marking makes a goggle suitable.
What matters most when choosing UTV goggles
Helmet fit and face seal
Try goggles with the helmet you plan to wear. Check that the frame sits within the helmet’s eyeport, the strap follows its intended path, and the foam seals against your face without uncomfortable pressure or gaps. Fit depends on the particular helmet and face shape, so a feature listed by a manufacturer is not proof that the goggle will fit you.
For example, Can-Am lists three-layer face foam and a no-slip silicone strap on its Trench models. SCOTT lists articulated outriggers and three-layer foam on the Prospect. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent fit tests.
Fog control and airflow
Look for the maker’s stated anti-fog treatment or lens design, ventilation, and a fit that works with your helmet. Anti-fog features can help, but they do not guarantee fog-free vision in every temperature, exertion level, or helmet setup. If possible, check the complete combination before riding.

#1 Best Overall
- IMPACT PROTECTION: Durable polycarbonate lens provides excellent protection against dust, debris, and flying objects during off-road riding
- VENTILATION SYSTEM: Strategic air vents prevent fogging and maintain clear vision while riding in challenging conditions
- SECURE FIT: Adjustable elastic strap with non-slip silicone ensures goggles stay firmly in place during intense riding sessions
- COMFORT FEATURES: Triple-layer foam padding creates a comfortable seal around your face while absorbing sweat
- LENS DESIGN: Wide-angle view with distortion-free optics allows maximum visibility of the terrain ahead
Lens clarity, durability, and light
Compare documented lens construction, optical claims, and scratch-resistant features. For instance, Can-Am specifies an injection-molded polycarbonate cylindrical lens for the Trench, while the Polaris listing for the 509 Kingpin specifies an anti-scratch coating. Do not treat a lens as impact-certified unless the exact product listing says so.
Choose a tint for the light you expect, and consider whether you need a quick-change system or an included clear lens for changing conditions. The cited product pages describe lens options but do not establish one best tint for bright sun, dusk, or night. Do not assume a single lens is ideal across all of them.

- All-new design offers best-in-class viewport for unparalleled vision
- VLS (Variable Lens System) design allows transfer of standard and injection molded lenses in the same frame
- Triple-layer face foam with fleece liner
- Lexan lens offers UV protection
- Strap-mounted third tear-off post
Prescription glasses and coverage
If you wear glasses, look for an explicit over-the-glasses (OTG) specification. Then try your glasses, goggles, and helmet together: the frames should fit without being pushed uncomfortably, and the goggle should still seal against your face. Can-Am says its Trench OTG fits most prescription glasses with lenses less than 2 inches (51 mm) high and frame branches 5¾ inches (146 mm) wide. The standard Trench listing says prescription compatibility cannot be guaranteed.
Accessories and compatibility
Tear-offs and replacement lenses can be useful for a specific goggle system, but they are not universal. Confirm compatibility with the exact model before buying accessories.

Examples to compare, not a ranked winner
These examples illustrate different features; none was hands-on tested for this guide, and the listed specifications are manufacturer or retailer claims.
| Model | Documented features | Potential fit for |
|---|---|---|
| Can-Am Trench OTG UV Goggles | Can-Am lists a polycarbonate cylindrical lens, anti-scratch and anti-fog performance, removable nose guard, three-layer face foam, silicone strap, and OTG fit dimensions. | Riders seeking an explicitly specified option for prescription glasses, within the stated dimensions. |
| 509 Kingpin Off Road Goggles (Polaris listing) | Polaris lists a quick-change lens, tear-off posts, anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings, triple-layer foam, and removable nose piece. | Riders who value lens-swapping options or tear-off compatibility in this system. |
| SCOTT Prospect | SCOTT describes it as an off-road motocross goggle for track or trail and lists 100% UV protection, NoFog anti-fog treatment, articulated outriggers, three-layer foam, an included clear lens, and a noseguard. | Riders comparing a trail-capable model with an included clear lens and stated fit features. |
Match the goggle to your riding conditions
- Dusty roads: Prioritize a close, comfortable face seal and a lens/ventilation setup that works with your helmet. No single anti-fog claim guarantees clear vision in every dusty or strenuous ride.
- Bright sun: Compare the available lens tints and the product’s stated UV protection. The SCOTT Prospect listing states 100% UV protection; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test here.
- Changing light: Consider quick-change lenses or an included clear lens, and verify that the replacement lens is made for that exact goggle model.
- Prescription glasses: Start with an OTG model such as the Trench OTG, check your glasses against its published dimensions, and confirm the combination fits under your helmet.
Check protection markings and product details
Polaris’s official GENERAL safety guidance says: “Do not depend on eyeglasses or sunglasses for eye protection.” It recommends shatterproof goggles or a shatterproof helmet face shield and lists markings such as VESC 8, V-8, Z87.1, or CE. This is Polaris guidance, not universal legal advice or proof that every product with one of those markings is appropriate. Check the exact product’s labeling and the requirements that apply where you ride. Polaris GENERAL owner safety guidance
