Which used Mercedes is the most reliable?

Is the 2014–2021 C-Class a good used Mercedes to buy?

Generation-wide scores can obscure differences between individual model years. Consumer Reports describes the 2017 E-Class as more reliable than its model-year peers, while its indexed 2023 C-Class page describes that model year as about average. Those are model-year comparisons, not direct substitutes for a generation-wide rating. Consumer Reports says its 2026 reliability framework draws on about 380,000 vehicles, 20 potential trouble spots and vehicle years 2000–2025; the indexed results do not supply comparable numeric Mercedes scores for every year. 2021-present C-Class
What Car?’s 76.3% rating for the 2021-present C-Class is notably below its 2014–2021 predecessor’s 88.8%. Owners reported issues involving the engine, air conditioning, fuel system, gearbox and non-engine electrical systems. This is a reason for extra caution, not proof that every newer C-Class will be unreliable.

How to interpret the reliability evidence
What Car?’s percentages describe reports from owners of the named generations, not the odds that a particular car will be trouble-free. They are useful for comparing the reported experience of those survey cohorts, but differences in vehicle age, history and use still matter. The results retrieved do not establish matching survey evidence for every Mercedes sedan, coupe, engine or powertrain, so they do not support broad claims that a particular diesel, hybrid or other version is inherently the most reliable.
Other studies should not be blended into a single ranking without comparable model-level results. J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study reports a cohort of 33,268 original owners of 2023-model-year vehicles, but the available study detail here does not provide a Mercedes ranking to compare with the What Car? scores.
