For a reliability-focused used Mazda, begin with the Mazda3 if you want a compact car and the CX-5 if you need a compact SUV. Consumer Reports’ 2026 brand ranking puts Mazda third for used-car reliability, while its model-year assessments rate the 2023 CX-5 “much more reliable” and the 2024 CX-5 and 2024 Mazda3 “more reliable” than other cars from their respective model years. Those ratings are useful starting points—not guarantees about a particular used car.
Which used Mazdas belong on a reliability shortlist?
Consumer Reports ranks Mazda No. 3 among brands for used-car reliability in its 2026 rankings and says many of the brand’s small crossovers, SUVs, and sedans have above-average reliability ratings. Brand-level results provide context, but the exact model year and the condition of the individual vehicle matter more when you are deciding what to buy. Consumer Reports’ Mazda overview distinguishes its used-car reliability ranking from its new-car reliability and maintenance-cost rankings.
2023 Mazda CX-5
Consumer Reports assesses the 2023 CX-5 as “much more reliable” than other cars from the 2023 model year. That makes it a strong candidate if you want a compact SUV, subject to the vehicle’s service records, mileage, recall status, and inspection results. See the 2023 CX-5 assessment.
2024 Mazda CX-5
The 2024 CX-5 is rated “more reliable” than other cars from its model year. Consumer Reports says its reliability history draws on its latest subscriber survey and covers multiple trouble spots. See the 2024 CX-5 assessment.

2024 Mazda3
Consumer Reports rates the 2024 Mazda3 “more reliable” than other cars from its model year. Its assessment is based on the organization’s latest subscriber survey of 2024 Mazda3 owners. The page also reports three NHTSA recalls for this model year, so check the VIN of any car you consider rather than assuming all recalls apply to every example. See the 2024 Mazda3 assessment.
Why the model year matters
A good result for one year should not be generalized to every example of the same model. Consumer Reports rates the 2019 CX-5 as about average for reliability compared with other cars from the 2019 model year, rather than above average; its page reports two NHTSA recalls. This contrast with the 2023 and 2024 assessments is a reason to compare year-specific information before choosing a vehicle. See the 2019 CX-5 assessment.

These are relative reliability assessments, not predictions of how long a vehicle will last or a verdict on an individual car. Consumer Reports bases its model assessments on subscriber surveys. Its broad reliability history charts are based on its latest survey of about 380,000 vehicles overall; that is not a Mazda-only sample size.

How to check a used Mazda before buying
- Compare the exact year and vehicle. Narrow your search by model year, trim, mileage, and powertrain. Use year-specific reliability information instead of assuming every Mazda or every CX-5 has the same record.
- Review ownership and maintenance records. Look for documented servicing and ask about past use. Mazda’s used-car guide flags unknown history and maintenance as risks and points buyers to vehicle-history resources.
- Check the VIN for open recalls. Use the NHTSA recall lookup for the vehicle’s VIN. NHTSA explains that year, make, and model searches can also surface investigations, complaints, and manufacturer communications; those results are not the same as a VIN-specific open-recall result.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask a qualified mechanic to assess the car before you commit, and test the equipment during your own visit. Survey ratings and manufacturer information do not establish the condition of the car being sold.
- Consider certified pre-owned if its documentation helps. Mazda says its Certified Pre-Owned vehicles include a CARFAX Vehicle History Report and CARFAX buyback guarantee. Check current eligibility and program terms with the seller on Mazda’s CPO page.
A practical way to make the final choice
- Start with the 2023 or 2024 CX-5 for an SUV, or the 2024 Mazda3 for a compact car, based on the favorable year-specific assessments cited above.
- Compare the history, maintenance, mileage, recall status, and condition of the actual vehicles available to you.
- Do not treat a brand ranking or model-year rating as a substitute for inspection and records.
