Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf you’re shopping in the U.S. for a used SUV with three rows and a vehicle-price budget under $30,000, start by comparing the 2020 Toyota Highlander, 2021 Honda Pilot, and 2022 Nissan Pathfinder. They lead iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking within its defined price and age range. Also check local listings for the Chevrolet Traverse, Mazda CX-9, Mitsubishi Outlander, Kia Sorento, Volkswagen Atlas, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade: the right choice depends on third-row use, condition, mileage, and the actual price of the vehicle you find.
Top-ranked used three-row SUVs under $30,000
iSeeCars’ 2026 ranking places these three model years at the top of its used three-row SUV list under $30,000. Its analysis covered more than 12 million vehicles and combined reliability, value retention, and safety. The candidate set focused on vehicles one to six years old priced from $25,000 to $30,000, so it is a screening list—not a ranking of every used three-row SUV below the budget.
| Model year and SUV | iSeeCars average used price | Overall score |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 Toyota Highlander | $28,608 | 8.3/10 |
| 2021 Honda Pilot | $26,542 | 8.1/10 |
| 2022 Nissan Pathfinder | $26,641 | 8.1/10 |
These are analyzed averages and scores from iSeeCars, not guaranteed asking or transaction prices. Local inventory, mileage, trim, condition, and location can change what is available.
Other models worth checking
A separate Edmunds shortlist published by the Associated Press on March 26, 2025, gave approximate listing prices for five 2022 models. These figures describe the article’s estimates at that time, not current offers.
#1 Best Overall
| 2022 model | Approximate listing price in the March 2025 article | Third-row or driving note |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Traverse | $28,300 | Edmunds describes it as especially spacious, with a relatively accommodating third row. |
| Kia Sorento | $28,500 | Third-row fit details were not stated in the cited article. |
| Mazda CX-9 | $28,400 | Edmunds calls it athletic but says the third row is tight. |
| Mitsubishi Outlander | $24,800 | Its third row is small and better suited to children; Edmunds also notes relatively modest acceleration. |
| Volkswagen Atlas | $29,600 | Edmunds describes it as roomy, with a third row that can fit adults. |
Car and Driver’s model-year ranking also includes the Kia Telluride from 2020 through 2024 and Hyundai Palisade from 2020 through 2024. The page lists combined EPA fuel-economy ranges of 21–23 mpg for its 2021–2023 Telluride entries and 20–22 mpg for the 2024 Telluride; its Palisade entries are listed at 21–22 mpg combined. These figures and rankings do not establish the fuel economy of every engine, drivetrain, or trim, nor the condition of an individual used vehicle. Verify the exact configuration before comparing listings. Car and Driver praises Telluride features and interior space, and the Palisade cabin and smooth ride.
How to choose the right one for your needs
Test the third row with all seats in use
Do not judge a three-row SUV by its seat count alone. Sit in the back row, check how easy it is to get in and out, and see how much room remains for luggage with all rows upright. If adults will regularly ride in row three, prioritize a real test with those passengers; if you need space mainly for children, a tighter row may be acceptable. The Traverse and Atlas are described as roomier, while the CX-9 and Outlander illustrate the trade-off of a less accommodating third row. Those are editorial descriptions, so verify the fit in the specific vehicle.
Rank #2
Balance price, mileage, and condition
The iSeeCars order reflects a composite score, not a guarantee that a particular Highlander, Pilot, or Pathfinder will be reliable. Compare maintenance records, mileage, title and accident history, and have a qualified mechanic perform an independent pre-purchase inspection. A well-documented vehicle in good condition may be a better buy than a higher-ranked model with an unclear history.
Match fuel economy and driving feel to your use
Check the EPA figure for the exact engine, drivetrain, and trim, then consider your daily mileage and road-trip needs. Take each finalist on a test drive that includes the roads you typically use. Published rankings and descriptions are useful for narrowing the list, but they cannot tell you whether a particular vehicle’s ride, acceleration, or controls suit you.

Set a true out-the-door budget
Decide whether $30,000 is your ceiling for the vehicle itself or for the full purchase. Taxes, registration, dealer fees, financing, insurance, and immediate maintenance can increase the total cost. Current local listing prices have not been established here, so use live listings and written out-the-door quotes rather than treating older averages as today’s prices.
Check safety ratings and recalls by model year and VIN
Use NHTSA’s safety ratings lookup to check the exact model year, make, and model. For recalls, use the specific vehicle’s VIN or license plate; a model-year recall list cannot show whether a particular vehicle’s repair has been completed. NHTSA’s consumer guidance says: “If you have an open recall, immediately get your vehicle repaired for FREE at a local dealership.” If the lookup result is unclear, contact a manufacturer’s dealership and confirm the repair status.
NHTSA reported 1,073 vehicle and equipment safety recalls and more than 29.3 million vehicles recalled in the U.S. in 2024. Those figures are a reason to check any used vehicle’s VIN, not evidence that a particular model in this list has an open recall.
Used SUV inspection checklist
- Confirm the exact vehicle. Match the VIN on the vehicle and its paperwork, and confirm model year, trim, engine, and drivetrain against the listing.
- Check NHTSA records. Look up safety ratings by year, make, and model, then search recalls by VIN or license plate. Verify whether any required remedy has been completed.
- Review the vehicle’s history. Ask for maintenance documentation and review title and accident records. Treat gaps or inconsistencies as reasons to investigate further.
- Test the seating and cargo layout. Try row three, check access, and load the luggage or child seats you expect to use.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the specific vehicle before purchase; model-level rankings cannot substitute for an inspection.
- Get the full purchase cost in writing. Include taxes, registration, fees, financing costs, and likely immediate maintenance in your budget.
Sources and changing information
Ranking order, asking prices, safety information, and open recall status can change. iSeeCars’ prices and scores are its analyzed averages; Edmunds’ 2022 price figures are estimates published in March 2025. For an actual purchase, rely on current local listings and the vehicle’s VIN-level records.
