A U-lock can be a sensible way to secure an electric scooter, but the best choice depends on whether it fits the scooter and the object you are locking it to. Prioritize a tight fit around a scooter part that cannot be removed with ordinary tools, plus a solid anchor that cannot be lifted over or easily cut. Kryptonite names its Evolution Mini-5 and New York Standard for one common scooter setup, but check the exact dimensions against your scooter before buying.
What makes a U-lock suitable for an electric scooter?
Start with fit, not a brand name. Scooter frames, decks, stems and wheels vary, and a U-lock that works on one model may not reach a useful attachment point on another. Check the lock’s current inner dimensions against both the scooter and the anchor you plan to use.
The lock must capture a part that cannot be removed with ordinary tools. It should also leave as little open space inside the U as practical: Kryptonite says less room makes it harder for a thief to use tools. Its scooter lock-up guidance recommends, for scooters without a passthrough frame, locking above a wheel or to the frame between the neck and deck.
Which U-locks are supported options?
Kryptonite identifies two U-locks for its guidance on scooters without a passthrough frame. ABUS describes another model as suitable for parked bikes and scooters. These are options cited by manufacturers, not a comparative test ranking or proof that any one lock is best for every scooter.

The useful comparison is practical: can the lock fit the scooter and anchor, does its security level suit the parking situation, and can you carry it conveniently? The cited official sources do not provide a comparable carry-weight table or scooter-specific attack-test results.
How to choose security for where you park
Kryptonite’s own scooter chart bases its 1–10 security scale primarily on location and time unattended. It distinguishes major metropolitan areas, metropolitan areas, college campuses, suburbs and rural areas, and considers quick stops, a couple of hours, all-day parking and overnight parking. For major metropolitan areas, the chart recommends levels 9–10 (“ultimate security”) at every listed duration. This is the manufacturer’s recommendation and scale, not a universal standard or an independent measurement of local crime risk. Use the chart as a selection aid, not a promise that a lock will prevent theft. Kryptonite says location and unattended time are primary factors in choosing a level; its support article is dated October 27, 2016. No universal winner or guarantee follows from the guidance.
How to lock an electric scooter
- Choose a suitable anchor. Use a solid object that cannot be lifted over and is hard to cut. Prefer a well-lit, busy location when possible.
- Find a secure scooter attachment point. Lock a part that cannot be removed with standard tools. On a scooter without a passthrough frame, Kryptonite suggests above a wheel or on the frame between the neck and deck.
- Keep the lock-up tight. Arrange the U-lock to leave as little unused space as practical, while still passing through the scooter and around the anchor.
- Include a wheel if you can. Secure the frame first, then a wheel if the lock’s fit allows it. If only one wheel can be secured in addition to the frame, Kryptonite recommends the rear wheel, saying its replacement costs about twice as much as a front wheel. That cost comparison is Kryptonite’s stated rationale, not an independently established universal figure. See its rear-wheel guidance.
- Consider a second security product. Kryptonite says, “We also recommend using two security products rather than just one as this will usually drive a thief to choose another target.” This is the manufacturer’s advice, not a guarantee against theft.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The product guidance supports choosing a lock by fit, attachment point, anchor and parking context. It does not establish that one U-lock is the safest for all electric scooters, provide a comparative scooter-specific attack test, or show that a lock is theft-proof. For the ABUS 402, the surfaced Sold Secure mark is for Pedal Cycle Bronze; it should not be read as scooter-specific certification, and the available product description does not support broader comparative claims.
