Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor five acres, the best tractor depends on the work—not the acreage alone. A property used mainly for mowing and light upkeep may suit a subcompact; regular loader work, hauling, heavier implements, or uneven ground can make a compact tractor a better fit. Compare exact model specifications and local dealer support before choosing.
Start with the work, not the acreage
Five acres of open lawn is a different job from five acres that need material moved, ground graded, snow cleared, or rear implements run. A 2026 buyer’s guide distinguishes a 1–5-acre property used mostly for mowing from a 5–20-acre hobby farm, but those ranges are guidance, not a sizing formula. FitTractor’s acreage categories do not replace matching a tractor to your actual chores.
List the jobs you expect to do most often, then consider which implements they require. Include occasional work—such as moving soil or maintaining a long driveway—if it would change the tractor or attachment you need. Also account for access, storage clearance, turning space, and terrain: a higher-capacity machine is not useful if it cannot fit or maneuver where you need it.
- Mowing and light upkeep: prioritize mower availability, deck width, maneuverability, and whether the deck can be removed and reinstalled conveniently.
- Frequent loader work or hauling: compare loader ratings at matching measurement points, along with the tractor’s physical fit and intended workload.
- Rear PTO work: compare PTO horsepower—not just engine horsepower—to the needs of the implements you plan to use.
- Uneven ground or traction demands: check whether the exact model has four-wheel drive and consider how its transmission suits the work.
Compare exact models on the specifications that matter
Engine horsepower and PTO horsepower are different measurements. An implement that runs from the power take-off (PTO) should be matched to the model’s PTO rating, not its engine rating. Loader capacities also need context: a rating at one height and distance from the pivot pin cannot be directly compared with a figure measured elsewhere.

| What to compare | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Workload | Mowing, loader cycles, hauling, grading, snow work, and rear PTO implements | Acreage alone does not describe the jobs or their frequency. |
| Engine and PTO power | Exact model and transmission-specific PTO rating | Implement requirements relate to PTO output, not simply engine horsepower. |
| Loader | Capacity, lift height, and distance from the pivot pin | Ratings measured at different points may not be comparable. |
| Rear hitch | Hitch category, lift rating, and implement compatibility | These determine which rear implements the tractor can use. |
| Drivetrain and transmission | Four-wheel drive availability and hydrostatic or gear options | Configuration affects traction and operating feel. |
| Mower setup | Mid-mount deck availability, width, and removal or installation | The right setup matters for mowing and access around obstacles. |
| Physical fit | Width, turning room, storage clearance, and terrain | A tractor that is too large for the property can be impractical. |
| Ownership support | Local dealer, service distance, parts, quote, and demonstration | Availability and support vary by location and should be confirmed locally. |

The same page gives conflicting gross-horsepower ranges: 20.9–23.3 hp in its introduction and 20.9–24.3 hp in a later section. Do not treat either series range as a verified maximum for a specific tractor; check the current brochure and specifications for the exact model.
John Deere compact lineup
John Deere Canada’s lineup page covers compact models from 21.5 to 75 hp. It lists features across the range, including standard four-wheel drive on several models, hydrostatic options on some, and Category 1 three-point hitch compatibility on multiple models. The lineup also describes mower-deck, loader, and quick-hitch conveniences, but it is not a five-acre recommendation. Identify an exact model and check its own specifications and available configurations. John Deere Canada compact tractor lineup

Massey Ferguson MF 1E
Massey Ferguson places the MF 1E Series in its “Mid-Size Property” category for 5–10 acres, associating that use case with mowing, hauling, landscaping, and general maintenance. That is manufacturer positioning, not proof that every five-acre property needs a tractor of this size. Its specifications are useful for comparing individual models because they distinguish engine horsepower from PTO horsepower. Massey Ferguson MF E Series specifications
| MF 1E model | Rated engine power | HST PTO power | Mechanical PTO power | Rear lift capacity at 24 inches behind | Maximum loader capacity at maximum height, 19.5 inches forward of pivot pin |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MF 1E.25 | 24 hp | 19.2 hp | 20.4 hp | 1,598 lb | 1,047 lb |
| MF 1E.35 | 34.5 hp | 27.6 hp | 29.2 hp | 1,598 lb | 1,047 lb |
These are manufacturer figures on Massey Ferguson’s current U.S. product page; the loader figure is stated at the measurement point shown in the table. Compare it only with other loader ratings that use the same measurement conditions.

Choose by configuration and local support
After narrowing the candidates by workload, compare how each available configuration handles your chores. Hydrostatic and gear transmissions are distinct options, not interchangeable ratings; consider which operating style suits the work and verify availability on the exact model. Likewise, check four-wheel drive, hitch category, mower setup, and attachment compatibility model by model. A Category 1 hitch label or a manufacturer’s implement range does not guarantee that every attachment will fit every tractor.
- Write down your regular and occasional jobs. Identify any PTO implements, loader tasks, mowing areas, and access constraints that could change the required configuration.
- Pick exact models to quote. Compare engine and transmission-specific PTO ratings, hitch and lift specifications, loader measurement points, and available mower decks or attachments.
- Check physical fit. Confirm the tractor and intended implements can pass through access points, turn in work areas, and fit in storage.
- Contact local dealers. Ask about the precise configuration, compatible implements, service distance, parts, and a demonstration. Deere directs shoppers to local dealers for pricing, while Massey Ferguson offers quote and demo requests; current local prices and inventory are not established by the product pages.
Make the decision against your real workload
For mowing-led upkeep, a subcompact may be a sensible choice if its deck and other capabilities suit the property. If you expect regular loader use, hauling, heavier rear implements, or work on uneven ground, compare compact models for the added capacity and configuration you actually need. The MF 1E, Kubota B01, and John Deere compact lineup are reasonable starting points for model-by-model comparisons, but acreage alone cannot identify the best one. A specification check and local demonstration can reveal whether the tractor, implements, and site are a workable match.
