Choose by your truck’s model year, engine, and configuration first: Ford Performance offers application-specific calibrations with stated emissions and warranty terms; SCT’s X4 is a handheld option for certain listed years; and HP Tuners provides a tuning and diagnostics platform for supported vehicles that may require a separate calibrator. None of the available information establishes a head-to-head performance or reliability winner.
Start with the exact truck, not the tuner brand
Before ordering, identify the model year, engine displacement, and configuration. A 2.7L EcoBoost, a standard 3.5L EcoBoost, a 3.5L PowerBoost hybrid, and a 3.5L Raptor are not interchangeable applications. Support can also differ between adjacent model years and between a device’s preloaded tunes and custom-tuning options.
- Confirm the vehicle’s model year and engine, including whether it is a PowerBoost hybrid or Raptor.
- Check the manufacturer’s live fitment list for that exact combination before purchase.
- Determine whether the product includes a finished calibration, provides access to one, or is a platform for a separate custom tune.
- Check fuel requirements, emissions status, installation conditions, warranty language, and any device or software prerequisites.
How the three tuning routes differ

Ford Performance: application-specific calibration packages
2021–2023 2.7L EcoBoost
Ford lists the M-9603-F27 calibration for 2021–2023 2.7L F-150s. Ford’s product page states peak output of 355 hp at 5,500 rpm and 433 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm. The listed application includes 4×2 and 4×4 models, all cab configurations and trims, and U.S. and Canadian vehicles. The package includes the M-12655-F ProCal 4 tool; Ford specifies premium fuel for maximum performance. Ford describes the calibration as 50-state approved under CARB EO D-431-12 and states a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty from the vehicle’s in-service date when installed by a Ford dealer or ASE/Red Seal certified technician. 2021–2023 3.5L EcoBoost
Ford lists M-9603-F35 for 2021–2023 3.5L EcoBoost F-150s. Ford states gains of 55 hp and 100 lb-ft, with peak output of 450 hp at 5,250 rpm and 510 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm. The listing covers 4×2 and 4×4 models, all cab configurations and trims, and U.S. and Canadian vehicles; it specifies premium fuel for maximum performance and 50-state approval under CARB EO D-431-12. Ford gives the same installation-conditioned 3-year/36,000-mile warranty terms as the 2.7L listing. The standard calibration does not fit 3.5L PowerBoost hybrids or F-150 Raptors, and Ford says the calibration and ProCal 4 are VIN-locked to one vehicle and not transferable. 2024–2026 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost
Ford’s current product pages list separate calibrations for 2024–2026 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost applications. For the 2.7L, Ford states peak figures of 355 hp at 5,500 rpm and 433 lb-ft at 3,500 rpm, with gains of up to 30 hp and 33 lb-ft; the listing also claims improved throttle response and optimized shift scheduling. For the 3.5L, Ford states 450 hp peak and a 55 hp gain, plus 510 lb-ft peak torque and a 100 lb-ft gain. The product does not fit PowerBoost or Raptor trucks, and premium fuel is required for maximum performance. Ford marks the 2024 and 2025 applications as 50-state approved under separate CARB executive orders; its page says the 2026 version is available only for non-California vehicles. The page also states a Ford warranty conditioned on installation by a Ford dealer or ASE/Red Seal technician. Confirm the exact year’s listing and state availability before purchase. Ford defines its “Fifty States Street Legal” mark as meaning CARB has determined a part will not adversely affect emissions when properly installed and used in the application identified in the product description. That is an application-specific statement, not blanket approval for other tunes, modified vehicles, or model years. Ford Performance emissions information.
SCT X4: confirm the tune as well as the device
SCT’s support page lists 2021 and 2022 F-150 2.7L and 3.5L EcoBoost combinations for both custom tuning and preloaded tunes. Its shown 2023 listings cover 3.3L and 5.0L combinations, but not 2.7L or 3.5L EcoBoost. It separately lists 2021 and 2022 3.5L PowerBoost for custom tuning only. Do not infer that a device package includes a tune for every supported configuration: SCT says buyers seeking custom tuning must work with one of its custom tuning dealers. SCT says its devices do not modify or delete vehicle emissions and makes compliance claims on its support page. Those statements do not establish that every tune available from every provider is suitable for every truck or jurisdiction. Check the actual calibration and application before use.
HP Tuners: a platform with hardware, software, and tuning steps
HP Tuners announced support on August 7, 2025 for 2024–2025 F-150s with 2.7L and 3.5L engines, including 3.5L PowerBoost. The announcement describes reading, editing, writing, scanning, logging, and diagnosing supported vehicles. For those newer applications it specifies an MPVI3 OBDII device, four Universal Credits, and the latest VCM Suite beta software. Professional shops can use RTD4 for remote tuning through Tune Delivery Network. HP Tuners’ 2024–2025 F-150 support announcement.

This is a tuning and diagnostics workflow, not evidence that the hardware purchase includes a finished calibration. Depending on the user’s experience and goals, a qualified calibrator or shop may be needed. Emissions approval is specific to the part and application
Do not transfer Ford’s CARB approval to an SCT or HP Tuners calibration, another model year, a modified truck, or a different engine. Confirm the exact part number and vehicle application on the manufacturer’s emissions information before public-road use. Avoid tunes that disable emissions controls.

Warranty language is not a universal promise
The Ford Performance product pages state a limited warranty for their listed calibrations subject to the specified installation conditions. That product-specific statement does not settle how a tune or other modification affects coverage under an individual vehicle’s warranty. Do not assume tuning automatically voids coverage or guarantees it remains intact; check the applicable vehicle warranty terms and discuss the specific modification with the relevant dealer or provider.
Account for the whole setup
Compare what is actually included: calibration, device, cable, credits, software, and access to a tuning provider. Also factor in the required fuel and any installation conditions. A lower-cost device is not a complete solution if the required tune, credits, or professional support are separate.
What performance evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Ford publishes output figures for its named calibrations, but the available product pages do not provide enough test-method detail to treat those numbers as a direct comparison with SCT custom tunes or HP Tuners calibrators. No independent head-to-head dyno comparison or long-term reliability dataset establishes a measured winner among these routes. Choose on verified fitment, documented requirements, emissions status, and the support workflow you can use—not on an unsupported claim that one brand makes the most power or lasts longest.
