There is no universal best trunk lid solenoid switch: the right part depends on your vehicle and on which component has failed. A release switch sends an open request; a solenoid or actuator moves or releases the latch. Before buying, identify the failed component, then match the replacement to your vehicle and original-equipment part number.
What does “trunk lid solenoid switch” mean?
Parts listings can use overlapping names for different components. A trunk lid release switch or trunk release switch is the control a driver presses or activates. A solenoid or actuator is part of the mechanism that releases or moves the latch. Depending on the vehicle, the actuator may be a separate component, built into a latch assembly, or part of a larger powered trunk mechanism. These designs are not interchangeable.
For example, Nissan’s 2009 Maxima factory service manual treats the trunk lid opener switch, body control module (BCM), wiring harness, and trunk release solenoid as distinct parts of the system. The component you need depends on the diagnosis and the vehicle’s design.
Identify the part before shopping
- Release switch: The input control, which may be inside the cabin, on the exterior, or integrated with another control.
- Standalone solenoid or actuator: The mechanism that acts on the release or latch.
- Latch assembly with integrated actuator: A combined part that may not service the actuator separately.
- Powered trunk mechanism: A larger motorized unit that may control powered opening or pull-down.
Inspect the original component and check whether the vehicle’s parts information services it separately. How to choose the right replacement
Fitment matters more than a broad “best” label. Establish what failed, then verify the replacement against the vehicle and the original part.
- Record the vehicle details. Start with year, make, model, body style, and trim. A production-date break or VIN lookup may be needed if hardware changed during a model run.
- Note how the trunk is operated. Check whether release is controlled by a key fob, interior button, exterior touchpad, or more than one of these.
- Compare the original part. Check its shape, mounting points, connector, and any combined functions. A switch that also controls the fuel door is not necessarily interchangeable with a trunk-only switch.
- Cross-reference the OE number. Compare the number on the original part, if available, with the listing’s OE references and application details. Confirm that the listing covers the component you are replacing—not just a similar-looking part.
- Check what is included and the seller’s terms. Confirm whether the package contains a switch, actuator, or complete latch, and review the current seller’s return and warranty terms.
For a vehicle-specific match, use the manufacturer or seller’s fitment information and verify the OE cross-reference. Two Dorman listings illustrate why the application must be checked: Dorman 901-209 is described as a direct-replacement trunk lid release switch for specified applications and lists OE references 1L2Z-14018-AA and 1L2Z-14018-AC; Dorman 901-888 is another application-specific trunk release switch. Neither example establishes fit for vehicles beyond the applications listed by Dorman.

What to compare when options fit your vehicle
Once you have confirmed the correct component and application, compare the details that determine whether the part suits the repair. Some catalogs also list a trunk-and-fuel-door opener switch or switch assembly, which combines functions that a trunk-only control does not.

A product roundup may show examples such as Hyundai trunk-and-fuel-door opener switches, a Genuine Hyundai 93555-3K500-U7 switch assembly, GM trunk release switches, or universal switches. These examples illustrate the range of product types, not a tested ranking. If considering a universal switch, verify its electrical specifications, button dimensions, connector, and compatibility with the vehicle’s circuit; a generic listing is not proof of fit.

How to tell whether the switch is actually at fault
A trunk that does not release does not by itself identify the failed part. The fault could involve the switch input, BCM, wiring, ground, solenoid or actuator, or latch mechanism. If one release control works while another does not, that can help narrow the fault, but it is not enough to prescribe a replacement across all vehicle platforms.
Nissan’s 2009 Maxima factory service manual provides a model-specific example: its diagnosis checks the relevant switch input, BCM operation, harness continuity, grounds, and trunk release solenoid, then directs repair or replacement based on the results. Its connector details, terminal values, and test sequence apply to that vehicle and should not be treated as universal instructions.

Use the service information for your exact vehicle or have a qualified technician diagnose the circuit before ordering a part. Replacing a switch without confirming the fault can leave the trunk problem unresolved.
