In one published year-by-year comparison, the 2021 Toyota Corolla Hybrid ranks highest among the model years shown. The same comparison places the 2020, 2022, and 2024 models near the top of their respective class rankings. These are comparisons with other compact passenger cars from the same model year—not head-to-head rankings of Corolla Hybrid years—and they cannot tell you whether a particular used car is in good condition.
How the listed Corolla Hybrid years rank
VehicleReliability.com says its rankings use NHTSA failure reports weighted against U.S. sales volumes and benchmarked by segment and year. The site also considers repair frequency and repair severity. Its displayed table reports these positions:
| Corolla Hybrid model year | Position in that year’s compact passenger-car comparison | Percentile reported by VehicleReliability.com |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 2nd of 27 | 96th |
| 2021 | 1st of 25 | 100th |
| 2022 | 1st of 29 | 100th |
| 2024 | 2nd of 22 | 95th |
| 2025 | 3rd of 18 | 88th |
These placements compare each Corolla Hybrid year with compact passenger cars in that same model-year comparison; they do not pit the Corolla Hybrid years against one another. The percentile is a relative class position, not the percentage of cars that are trouble-free or a failure rate. The source characterizes 2025 as its weakest listed Corolla Hybrid year, while still placing it in the upper quarter of its class. Its displayed table does not include a 2023 entry, so there is no supported placement here for that year. VehicleReliability.com’s ranking and methodology.
What the ranking can—and cannot—tell you
The comparison offers a useful starting point if you are narrowing a search: 2021 leads the listed years, and 2020, 2022, and 2024 also have strong reported class positions. But a year-level result is not a prediction for a specific car. It does not account for an individual vehicle’s mileage, accident history, maintenance, use, repair history, trim, or condition.

No clearly identified independent Corolla Hybrid reliability statistic beyond these ranking positions is established in the cited material. The published positions should therefore be treated as one third-party analysis, not a definitive industry consensus. They also do not establish that a higher-ranked year will necessarily be a better buy than a lower-ranked example in better condition.
Check recall status by VIN, not just model year
Toyota’s September 26, 2024 remedy notice for safety recall 23TA15 lists certain 2020–2021 Corolla vehicles. Across the Corolla population listed in that notice, Toyota estimated approximately 92,700 vehicles. The notice says affected vehicles could have improperly manufactured front-passenger Occupant Classification System sensors that may short-circuit, potentially preventing certain airbags from deploying as designed. Toyota said dealers would inspect the sensors and replace them if necessary at no charge. The notice does not mean every 2020 or 2021 Corolla Hybrid is included; eligibility depends on the vehicle. - Get the vehicle identification number (VIN) for the specific car you are considering.
- Enter it in the NHTSA recall lookup to check for open recalls.
- Ask the seller or Toyota dealer about any listed remedy and confirm whether the work has been completed for that VIN.
The NHTSA’s 2025 Recalls Annual Report, published in March 2026, directs owners to the agency’s VIN lookup. Its recall-completion-rate reporting includes campaigns with at least five quarters of completion reporting, or those that reached 100% completion before the fifth quarter. Manufacturer-level completion rates describe recall remedy completion, not the reliability of a particular Corolla Hybrid year.
Why complaint and recall counts are not reliability scores
RoadVitals’ NHTSA-derived Corolla Hybrid table reports five complaints, four recall campaigns, and one investigation across the Corolla Hybrid records it holds. Those counts are not failure rates. The site explains that owner- or driver-submitted complaints generally are not verified by NHTSA before publication and do not, by themselves, establish a defect. Counts also vary with vehicle sales and time in service, while recall campaigns apply to specific vehicles rather than every car in a model year. See RoadVitals’ Corolla Hybrid records and count limitations.

How to choose between used Corolla Hybrids
Use the year ranking as one comparison point, then assess the actual car. A lower-ranked year with a well-documented history and good condition may be a stronger candidate than a higher-ranked car with unknown maintenance or unresolved problems.
