ForCar’s complaint-rate ranking points to the 2020 Toyota Avalon as its strongest sufficiently aged model year, followed by 2016 and 2017. Its highest-rate cluster is 2006, 2008 and 2007. These are screening signals based on owner complaints—not a guarantee that one year, or any individual car, will be reliable.
Which Toyota Avalon years look best in ForCar’s complaint-rate ranking?
ForCar’s 2026 table divides the Avalon complaints it records by production runs. Among model years it includes in its ranking, the 2020 Avalon has the lowest reported rate. The figures below are ForCar’s calculations from complaint records, not official NHTSA reliability ratings.
| Model year | Complaints | Production runs | Complaints per production run |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 10 | 9 | 1.11 |
| 2016 | 21 | 16 | 1.31 |
| 2017 | 14 | 8 | 1.75 |
These values reflect the records grouped by ForCar on its 2026 page; complaint histories are voluntary reports and do not establish the share of all cars that experienced a problem. ForCar excludes newer model years from its ranking because they have had less time to accumulate complaints. ForCar’s Avalon complaint analysis
Which Avalon years have the highest complaint rates?
ForCar’s highest-rate group is led by 2006, 2008 and 2007. Its table gives these model years the following counts and rates:

- Comprehensive troubleshooting and fault-finding guides to quickly diagnose problems and reduce costly downtime.
| Model year | Complaints | Production runs | Complaints per production run |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2006 | 300 | 20 | 15 |
| 2008 | 299 | 21 | 14.24 |
| 2007 | 209 | 19 | 11 |
ForCar also reports 2003 at 17.67 complaints per production run—the highest raw rate in its table—but excludes newer years from its ranking because complaint histories have had unequal time to accumulate. So its raw-rate high and its ranking’s avoid-year group are not the same thing. ForCar’s Avalon complaint analysis
Why do Avalon “best” and “worst” year lists disagree?
Complaint rate is not the same as complaint total
ForCar reports 2,944 Avalon complaints across model years 1995–2022 and calculates 6.21 complaints per production run, compared with 3.73 for its market comparison. It groups complaints by the first 11 characters of the VIN and divides the counts by production runs to reduce the influence of production volume. That method still does not measure repair costs, controlled failure rates, or the likelihood that a specific used car will need repairs. ForCar’s Avalon complaint analysis

Different sources use different evidence and scoring
CarComplaints.com identifies 2014 as its worst-rated year, says 2006 has the most total complaints, and names engine problems as the worst category. That differs from ForCar’s complaint-rate picture, which places 2003 at the highest raw rate and highlights 2006–2008 as its highest-rate cluster. Keep these source-specific findings separate rather than treating them as a single consensus ranking. CarComplaints’ Toyota Avalon page
Consumer Reports’ search-result summary describes the 2018 Avalon Hybrid as having about-average reliability for its model year and one NHTSA recall. Consumer Reports says its reliability history is based on member survey data and that its model rating averages recent years when a model has not significantly changed. Survey ratings and NHTSA complaint counts are different measures, so this limited Hybrid summary should not be used to rank every Avalon year. What do Avalon complaint categories tell a buyer?
ForCar lists 542 air-bag complaints and 515 vehicle-speed-control complaints across the Avalon model range. Those totals describe owner reports recorded by the site; they do not mean every Avalon has those problems or establish the risk for a particular year or car. ForCar’s Avalon complaint analysis

How to use year rankings when shopping for a used Avalon
- Use the rankings to narrow a search, not to choose a car by year alone. The ForCar figures provide one complaint-based screen; CarComplaints reaches a different worst-year conclusion using its own presentation of reports.
- Check the specific vehicle’s VIN. ForCar presents a VIN check as a way to inspect a car’s build and match complaint information to it. This article does not verify any candidate vehicle’s history or recall completion. ForCar’s Avalon complaint analysis
- Review maintenance and ownership records. Look for a consistent service history and ask about repairs relevant to the car’s condition; year-level complaint counts cannot establish how a previous owner maintained it.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the particular car before purchase. An inspection addresses its present condition, which a model-year ranking cannot reveal.
- Optionally scan diagnostic codes. A compatible OBD-II scanner may reveal stored diagnostic trouble codes, but it cannot certify reliability, confirm recall completion, or replace an inspection. Compatibility varies, and no scanner is endorsed here.
- Compare the whole vehicle and deal. Consider mileage, price, records and inspection findings alongside model year; the best choice is the individual car that checks out, not necessarily the year with the lowest complaint ratio.
