Best Tesla Supercharger-to-J1772 Adapters: What Your EV Actually Needs

J1772 adapters are for AC Level 2 charging, not Tesla Superchargers. Eligible CCS1 EVs need an approved NACS DC adapter and vehicle- and site-specific access.

There is no J1772 adapter that lets a J1772-equipped EV use a Tesla Supercharger. J1772 is an AC charging connector, while Supercharging is DC fast charging. For a compatible CCS1-equipped EV, the relevant option is an approved NACS DC adapter supplied by Tesla or the vehicle’s manufacturer—not a J1772 adapter or a generic marketplace adapter.

Why a J1772 adapter will not work at a Supercharger

J1772 is used for AC charging, commonly at Level 2 stations. Tesla describes its SAE J1772 adapter as compatible with most public Level 2 charging stations, with a stated maximum of 19.2 kW. That adapter is for Tesla vehicles using J1772 charging stations; it does not convert a Supercharger’s DC output into J1772 AC charging.

Supercharging uses a different connector and charging path. Tesla says eligible CCS1 vehicles can use certain Superchargers with an NACS DC adapter provided by Tesla or the vehicle manufacturer. The two adapters serve different charging systems and are not interchangeable.

SAE J1772 adapter Tesla vehicle at a J1772 AC Level 2 station Tesla states a maximum of 19.2 kW and says this adapter is included with vehicle delivery. It is not for Supercharging. Tesla’s SAE J1772 adapter details.
Approved NACS DC adapter for a CCS1 vehicle Eligible CCS1 vehicle at a compatible Tesla Supercharger Must be supplied by Tesla or the vehicle manufacturer. Check vehicle and site eligibility before buying or traveling. Tesla’s Supercharging guidance.
Tesla CCS1-to-NACS adapter Tesla vehicle at certain third-party CCS charging stations This product is marketed for Tesla owners charging at third-party stations; it is not the adapter a CCS1 vehicle needs to use a Supercharger. Tesla’s CCS1-to-NACS adapter details.

How to check whether your CCS1 EV can Supercharge

  1. Confirm your exact vehicle eligibility. Check the make, model, and model year against Tesla’s current Supercharging guidance. CCS1 connector compatibility alone does not establish access.
  2. Check the specific site. Use the Tesla app or Tesla’s interactive map to see whether a Supercharger location supports your vehicle.
  3. Use the approved adapter source. If your vehicle is eligible and needs an adapter, obtain the NACS DC adapter from Tesla or your vehicle manufacturer. Chevrolet, for example, describes its vehicle-maker NACS DC adapter as enabling eligible CCS vehicles to use Tesla Superchargers; that does not mean every CCS vehicle is eligible. Chevrolet’s Supercharger charging guidance.

Do not buy a generic adapter for Supercharger use

Tesla prohibits third-party adapters at Superchargers. Do not choose an adapter simply because its listing says “Tesla,” “NACS,” or “J1772”: verify the connector direction, DC fast-charging use, exact vehicle compatibility, and approval by Tesla or your vehicle manufacturer. An adapter intended for AC Level 2 charging or for a Tesla vehicle at a third-party station will not meet the CCS1-to-Supercharger use case.

What to look for when comparing approved adapters

  • Exact vehicle fit: Confirm make, model, and year rather than relying on a broad “CCS-compatible” claim.
  • Correct direction and charging type: The relevant product is a vehicle-maker or Tesla-approved NACS DC adapter for an eligible CCS1 vehicle—not a J1772 AC adapter.
  • Site access: Check supported Supercharger locations in Tesla’s app or map, since access depends on both vehicle and site.
  • Current availability and terms: Check the manufacturer’s current purchasing information for your vehicle. Eligibility and product availability can change.
