Chemical Guys Clean Slate is positioned for removing old wax, sealant, and glaze before detailing; Adam’s Strip Wash also targets road film and winter salt and offers foam-cannon directions. There is no credible independent comparison establishing a “best overall,” and neither product should be treated as a guaranteed way to remove a durable ceramic coating.
What does a strip wash do?
A strip wash is an occasional, heavy-duty wash used to prepare paint for work such as claying, paint correction, or applying fresh protection. It is intended to remove or reduce old wax, sealant, glaze, and surface residue—not to replace regular maintenance soap or mechanical paint correction.
Product claims about removal and paint safety below come from the manufacturers; no independent head-to-head test was identified. Use the label directions for the exact product you buy, since formulas and instructions can change.
Which strip wash should you choose?
| Product | Best-fit use | Application details | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chemical Guys Clean Slate Surface Cleanser Wash | Prep intended to remove old wax, sealants, and glazes before a full detail, claying, or coating application, according to Chemical Guys. | Manufacturer directions: shake; add 1 oz to 5 gallons of clean water; wash top to bottom with a mitt; rinse and dry with a microfiber towel. See the product page and wax-removal guide. | Positioned as a reset/prep wash, not routine maintenance soap. Removal and paint-safety statements are manufacturer claims, not independently verified comparative results. |
| Adam’s Strip Wash | Heavy-duty prep where road film and winter salt are also concerns; Adam’s describes an acidic formula targeting waxes, silicones, and resins. | Adam’s provides bucket and foam-gun or foam-cannon instructions. Follow the current product label and the brand’s safe-washing guidance for shade, prompt rinsing, and careful contact washing. | Adam’s says it is not for every wash, durable sealants may need more than one pass, and its guidance does not claim the wash removes the ceramic coatings it names. Check current formula and caution language. |
Choose by the surface problem and application method you need: Clean Slate is explicitly positioned around wax, sealant, and glaze preparation, while Adam’s adds road-film and salt positioning plus foam-cannon use. The available sources do not establish which performs better, offers better value, or is universally safest.

- CERAMIC COATING PREP: Required car detailing step before applying ceramic coatings, glass coatings, or paint sealants, since residual oils and waxes can keep coatings from bonding fully to clear coat
- PAINT CORRECTION PREP: Use this surface cleaner before clay bar work, polishing, or compounding to make sure the panel reads its true defect level, so you can dial in the right pad and product combination on the first test spot
- PRO STRIP WASH SOAP (CWS80316): Strip wash car soap built to lift old waxes, sealants, glazes, and surface oils off the paint, giving you a truly bare surface for paint correction, coating prep, and accurate panel inspection
- WORKS ACROSS THE BUILD: Use this Chemical Guys soap on cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles, boats, RVs, and trailers any time you want a true reset before paint work, a deep clean, or a fresh coating application

How do you use a strip wash before claying or applying protection?
- Rinse loose dirt first. Chemical Guys recommends a strong pre-rinse before contact washing; this helps clear grit before a mitt touches the paint. Its car-wash soap guide provides general wash context.
- Prepare the product exactly as directed. For Clean Slate, the stated bucket dilution is 1 oz in 5 gallons of clean water. For Adam’s, use the current bucket or foam-application directions on its label or product page rather than assuming the same dilution.
- Wash carefully. Use a clean mitt and controlled contact-wash technique. Adam’s recommends a two-bucket method with grit guards in its safe-washing guidance.
- Keep the product wet and rinse promptly. For Adam’s, work in shade and rinse without delay to reduce the risk of streaking. Do not allow wash solution to dry on the vehicle.
- Rinse and dry, then continue prep as needed. Clean Slate’s directions call for rinsing and drying with a microfiber towel. Washing alone does not remove bonded contamination; clay or other appropriate preparation may still be needed for the next step.
Will a strip wash remove wax, sealant, or ceramic coating?
Wax and glaze
Clean Slate is specifically marketed by Chemical Guys for old wax and glaze removal as part of detailing preparation. Treat that as a product claim, not a guarantee that every layer or residue will be completely removed in one wash.
Durable sealant
Adam’s says durable sealants may take more than one pass. A single strip wash therefore should not be assumed to leave paint completely bare.

- ✅ ULTIMATE RESET – Strips everything off your paint—including contaminants, old waxes, and prior coatings—for a fresh start.
- ✅ GENTLY FORMULATED – Our strongest wash, yet still safe and gentle on paint and all exterior surfaces.
- ✅ COATING PREP SECRET – Creates the ideal bare surface for applying a coating (like NITRO V7) ensuring the strongest bond possible.
- ✅ MAXIMIZED RESULTS – Enhances coating longevity and shine by providing a perfectly clean foundation.
Ceramic coating
Do not buy a strip wash on the assumption that it will remove a durable ceramic coating. Adam’s says its product will not remove the ceramic coatings named in its guidance. A wash can clean accumulated dirt from coated paint without being a coating-removal method, and the available manufacturer information does not support a general claim that any shampoo removes every ceramic coating.
Is a pre-wash foam or panel-prep spray the same thing?
No. Related products have different jobs and should not be substituted automatically for a strip-wash shampoo.

- Strips Waxes, Silicones & Resins Without Drying Out Plastics or Rubber

- CARPRO Lift is a pre-wash foam used before shampooing; it is not presented as the same category of wax- and sealant-prep wash.
- Gyeon Q²M Prep is a spray-on degreaser for oily and polishing residues before coating. Gyeon also describes it for old wax residues, but its spray-on panel-prep role differs from washing the car with a strip-wash shampoo.
If you are preparing for a coating, washing may be only one part of the process. Follow the coating maker’s preparation directions and use a suitable panel-preparation product where required; do not assume a strip wash alone has removed every contaminant or prior layer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How often should you use strip wash?
Reserve it for occasional reset or preparation work rather than using it as your default maintenance soap. Chemical Guys positions Clean Slate as a reset product. Adam’s calls Strip Wash heavy-duty and says, “This is not a soap to be used every wash,” in its Safe Car Washing Methods guidance.
