“Best” depends on what you need from a wagon: the 2026 Car and Driver ranking puts the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon first at 10/10, while the Audi A6 allroad and Volvo V60 Cross Country offer different size and all-weather priorities. The ranking is an editorial assessment, not a universal scorecard; compare the ratings alongside price, capability, efficiency and the space your household needs.
2026 station wagons ranked by Car and Driver
Car and Driver’s ranking reports the following ratings, starting prices and combined fuel-economy figures. Starting prices are not quotes or transaction prices, and the figures are not a common independent dataset. The publication says its rankings draw on instrumented tests and editors’ real-world impressions across roughly 200 data points, including acceleration, handling, comfort, cargo space, fuel efficiency, value and enjoyment.
| Model | Car and Driver rating | Starting price shown | Combined mpg shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon | 10/10 | $79,650 | 25 |
| Mercedes-AMG E-Class Wagon | 9.5/10 | $94,700 | 22 |
| Audi A6 allroad | 9/10 | $74,495 | 24 |
| Volvo V60 / V60 Cross Country | 8.5/10; the displayed listing is headed 2025, not 2026 | $51,495 in that listing | not stated (Car and Driver ranking) |
| Audi RS6 Avant | 8.5/10 | $132,095 | 16 |
| BMW M5 Touring | 8.5/10 | $129,350 | 13 |
| Volvo V90 Cross Country | 8.5/10 | $68,195 | 25 |
Because the Volvo V60 entry is presented under a 2025 heading, its 8.5/10 rating and $51,495 starting price should not be treated as 2026 figures. Volvo’s official US 2026 page lists the V60 Cross Country at a $53,595 starting MSRP. Edmunds separately calls the 2026 V60 Cross Country its top-rated small wagon and the A6 allroad its top-rated midsize wagon. Edmunds shows a 5.5/10 rating, $52,300–$57,600 MSRP and 26 mpg combined for the V60 listing. Those scores use different publication methods and model-year labels, so they should not be averaged or read as directly interchangeable.
Which wagon fits your priorities?
Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon: luxury all-rounder
Car and Driver’s top-ranked choice is described on its review page as the E-Class All-Terrain. Its 2026 review says the model is largely unchanged, with a fingerprint scanner for infotainment-profile authentication now standard. That makes it a natural first candidate for shoppers prioritizing a premium wagon experience, but the ranking alone does not establish that it suits every budget or cargo need.

Audi A6 allroad: flexible luxury wagon
Audi highlights 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatbacks, a hands-free tailgate and drive select on its official 2026 A6 allroad page. Drive select adjusts engine, transmission, steering and suspension settings. These features are useful to consider if you regularly balance passengers and longer cargo, though the available evidence does not provide directly comparable cargo-volume measurements across the models.
Volvo V60 Cross Country: smaller lifted AWD option
Volvo describes the 2026 V60 Cross Country as a mild hybrid that does not require plugging in, with standard all-wheel drive. Volvo’s US page lists a $53,595 starting MSRP, EPA-estimated 23 mpg city / 31 highway / 26 combined, up to 247 hp, and 0–60 mph in as fast as 6.6 seconds. It also lists Off Road mode, higher ground clearance and Hill Descent Control. These are manufacturer-published specifications and features; confirm the equipment and live price for the vehicle you are considering on Volvo’s V60 Cross Country page.
Audi RS6 Avant and BMW M5 Touring: performance first
Car and Driver’s descriptions give the RS6 Avant 621 hp and the M5 Touring 717 hp. Their ranking entries pair those performance figures with substantially higher starting prices and lower displayed combined fuel economy: $132,095 and 16 mpg for the Audi, versus $129,350 and 13 mpg for the BMW. Choose between them based on your driving priorities and the exact configuration and costs available to you; the ranking does not make either a value winner for every buyer.
Volvo V90 Cross Country: another lifted-wagon choice
The V90 Cross Country appears in Car and Driver’s list at 8.5/10, with a displayed $68,195 starting price and 25 mpg combined. The cited figures do not establish a directly comparable cargo or ground-clearance advantage over the other candidates, so check the vehicle’s current specifications and local availability if it is on your shortlist.

How to choose the right 2026 wagon
- Start with passenger and cargo needs. Check seating, rear-seat flexibility and the shape of the cargo opening in person. The available figures do not provide a consistent cargo-volume comparison for every candidate.
- Decide whether you need all-weather features or SUV-level off-road ability. AWD, extra clearance, drive modes and hill-descent systems may help in poor weather or on rougher access roads, but an all-terrain description is not proof of capability equivalent to a dedicated SUV.
- Set a budget using the actual vehicle, not just its starting price. The ranking’s prices are starting figures; verify current local availability, configuration, options and pricing with a dealer.
- Balance performance and fuel economy. The RS6 Avant and M5 Touring emphasize power, while their displayed combined mpg figures are lower than those of the other ranked entries with reported figures. Consider the trade-off against your typical driving.
- Compare test drives, not scores alone. Ratings are specific to each publisher’s methods and judgment. Check the seating position, ride, visibility, controls and cargo access that matter to you.
Availability and model-year caveats
This is a US-market comparison of selected new-model-year 2026 wagons, not a verified exhaustive inventory of every wagon worldwide. Car and Driver’s V60/V60 Cross Country row is specifically displayed under a 2025 heading, while Volvo’s official US page gives 2026 V60 Cross Country specifications. Verify local availability and current prices before deciding.
