Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a new sports car with an official 2026 starting price below $50,000, the clearest choices in the available pricing evidence are the rear-wheel-drive Toyota GR86, starting at $31,400, and Subaru BRZ, starting at $30,095. The 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata is another convertible-focused candidate, but confirm the current price of the exact trim before treating it as under budget. For a used option, consider a 2024 Chevrolet Camaro convertible only after checking local price, condition, mileage, and history.
These are U.S. vehicle-price comparisons, not out-the-door budgets: manufacturer starting prices exclude taxes, fees, options, dealer adjustments, and ownership costs. A model name alone does not guarantee that every trim or local listing falls below $50,000.
Which sports cars have the clearest case under $50,000?
| Model | Price evidence | Format and driving character | What to verify |
| Toyota GR86 (new, 2026) | $31,400 starting MSRP, listed by Toyota for 2026. Toyota | Rear-wheel-drive coupe. Toyota says its low-mounted engine lowers the center of gravity; front-fender air vents channel air around the car for stability. | Exact trim, transmission, options, and local dealer price. |
| Subaru BRZ (new, 2026) | $30,095 starting price, listed by Subaru for 2026. Subaru | Rear-wheel-drive two-door sports car. | Exact trim, transmission, equipment, and dealer price. |
| Mazda MX-5 Miata (new, 2026) | Not stated in the cited ranking result; Mazda published a 2026 pricing and packaging announcement on January 27, 2026. Mazda’s announcement | Lightweight convertible character, sharp handling, and a rev-happy four-cylinder, as described in the 2026 ranking. Car and Driver’s ranking | Check current official pricing for the exact trim, plus its equipment and local transaction price. |
| Ford Mustang (new, 2026) | Not stated by trim in the cited 2026 ranking. MotorTrend’s rankings | Included in MotorTrend’s tested 2026 sports-car rankings. | Confirm that the specific configuration and current price qualify; do not assume every Mustang trim is below the cap. |
| Chevrolet Camaro convertible (used, 2024) | Surfaced as a used-car choice under $50,000 in iSeeCars’ analysis of reliability, resale value, and safety. iSeeCars’ used-car analysis | Convertible; a used-market alternative rather than a new-car price comparison. | Local asking price, mileage, condition, maintenance and accident history, and remaining warranty. |
| Nissan Z | Car and Driver includes it in its under-$50,000 category and describes up to 420 horsepower, but the cited result does not establish a qualifying configuration or transaction price. Car and Driver’s ranking | Do not infer a particular trim’s equipment or price from the category listing. | Verify model year, trim, and current price before counting it as an under-$50,000 buy. |
How to choose between the GR86, BRZ, and Miata
Choose the GR86 or BRZ for a rear-wheel-drive coupe
The GR86 and BRZ are the strongest documented new-car starting-price choices here. Both are rear-wheel-drive sports cars; the GR86 is described by Toyota as a coupe with a low-mounted engine, while Subaru identifies the BRZ as a two-door sports car. Their listed starting prices are not directly comparable with a dealer’s final quote: confirm the same model year, trim, transmission, equipment, and fees on both before deciding.
Choose the Miata if a convertible is the priority
The 2026 MX-5 Miata stands out for its lightweight, sharp-handling convertible character. The cited ranking does not give a verified MSRP, so check Mazda’s current official price for the trim you want rather than assuming it qualifies based on its appearance in an under-$50,000 list. A convertible’s open-air experience is the trade-off for a different passenger and cargo-use profile than a coupe; assess the space against your own needs.

When does a Mustang or Nissan Z qualify?
Both appear in current sports-car rankings, but the available price evidence does not identify which specific trims can be bought below $50,000. Treat them as models to investigate, not automatically qualifying recommendations. Compare the exact configuration’s official price with local dealer pricing, and include options and dealer adjustments when applying your vehicle-price ceiling.

How to apply the $50,000 ceiling
- Set the price basis. Decide whether $50,000 is your maximum vehicle price or your total spending limit. Starting MSRP excludes taxes, fees, options, dealer adjustments, and ownership costs, so it is not an out-the-door figure.
- Identify the exact configuration. Write down model year, trim, transmission, and desired equipment. A ranking that names a model does not establish that every version qualifies.
- Verify current pricing. Check the manufacturer’s current price and a local written dealer quote for a new car. For a used car, compare local listings and evaluate condition, mileage, and history rather than relying on a national ranking.
- Compare how you will use the car. Decide between coupe and convertible, consider passenger and cargo needs, and assess drivetrain, transmission, comfort, and everyday usability. Do not assume a single consistent test dataset establishes how every candidate compares on these points.
- Include ownership costs in the decision. Insurance, fuel, maintenance, and financing can affect affordability even when the vehicle price is under the cap; the cited starting prices do not quantify those costs.
