1. 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata: best overall small convertible
Choose the MX-5 Miata if you want the most focused, authentic small-convertible experience. The formula is unusually clear: two seats, a compact body, rear-wheel drive, low weight, a standard six-speed manual, and a 181-hp 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder. Nothing about it is aimed at maximizing passenger capacity or cargo space. That focus is why it is the strongest match for this category.
Independent testing coverage from Edmunds characterizes the MX-5 as one of the last pure sports cars and gives it a 7.2/10 expert rating after road and track testing. The important point is not that the Miata has the highest output in this group; it does not. Its appeal comes from the way its size, balance, rear-drive chassis, engine, and manual transmission work together.
2026 Miata pricing and trim choices
- Sport soft top: $30,430. This is the lowest-cost entry into the Miata range and the clearest choice for a buyer who wants the essential roadster experience.
- Club soft top: $33,930. This is the enthusiast-oriented step up. Mazda lists an available Brembo/BBS/Recaro package with Brembo brakes, forged BBS wheels, and heated Recaro seats.
- Grand Touring soft top: $35,730 with the manual or $36,650 with the automatic. It is the more comfort- and equipment-oriented version.
- Grand Touring RF: $38,450. The RF uses Mazda’s retractable-fastback roof instead of the conventional soft top.
- Club RF: $41,900. Mazda lists the Brembo/BBS/Recaro package as standard on RF Club models.
These figures should not be compared without checking the body style and transmission. A $30,430 Sport soft top is not equivalent to an RF, and Mazda lists package, paint, destination, and other charges separately.

Which Miata should you buy?
Buy the Sport soft top if the lowest price, lightest-feeling format, and uncomplicated open-air driving matter most. It is the sensible starting point for a second car, weekend car, or enthusiast who would rather spend money on driving than luxury equipment.
Buy the Club if you value extra performance-oriented hardware. The available Brembo/BBS/Recaro package is meaningful equipment rather than merely cosmetic trim, but it also raises the price substantially. Consider whether you will use the brakes, wheels, and seats before paying for the package.
Buy the Grand Touring if you expect to use the car regularly and want more comfort and driver-assistance equipment. The automatic is available for buyers who do not want a manual, although the six-speed remains central to the Miata’s enthusiast appeal.
Buy the RF if you prefer a more coupe-like roof and are willing to pay more for that character. Mazda says the roof can open or close in about 13 seconds and presents the RF as a combination of coupe and convertible qualities. It remains a two-seat Miata rather than becoming a practical coupe.

The Miata’s unavoidable compromises
The MX-5 is not a family car and should not be marketed as one. - John Cooper Works Convertible: $44,600 and 228 hp. This is the highest-output version in the listed 2026 MINI Convertible range and the most aggressive choice.
MINI’s U.S. specification information lists a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission for these configurations. Listed standard features include a convertible wind deflector, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a head-up display, and a 9.4-inch round OLED display. Equipment can vary by market, trim, packages, and production configuration, so check the window sticker rather than assuming every advertised feature is present on every car.

The Cooper C makes the most sense when the goal is an approachable open-top commuter or lifestyle car. Its 156-hp output is lower than the S and JCW, but that is not automatically a disadvantage for relaxed urban and suburban driving.
The Cooper S is the logical compromise for buyers who want a livelier car without moving all the way to the JCW’s price. It has 201 hp and should be considered the performance/equipment midpoint, not a promise that it will deliver the same rear-drive balance as a Miata.
The JCW is for buyers who specifically want the highest published output in the MINI Convertible lineup. Its 228 hp makes it the quickest-looking choice on paper, but output alone does not prove that it is the best-handling convertible or the best value. Compare ride comfort, equipment, insurance, and the actual drive before treating the JCW surcharge as justified.

MINI practicality: useful, but only within limits
The MINI’s back seat can help when a second passenger needs a short ride or when extra seating is occasionally more valuable than a large trunk. It is not a spacious family-car second row. 3. 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF: best hardtop-style alternative
The MX-5 RF is not a separate kind of sports car; it is the Miata concept with a retractable-fastback roof. Its approximately 13-second roof operation and coupe-like profile make it attractive to shoppers who want a more substantial roof treatment than the soft top provides.
The RF can feel like the more polished visual choice, but it does not solve the Miata’s fundamental limitations. It still has two seats, limited storage, and a small trunk. The price premium is primarily for the roof format and the equipment tied to the selected trim, not for a transformation into a practical grand tourer.
Choose the soft top when low cost, traditional roadster simplicity, and the lightest possible open-air character are priorities. Choose the RF when the fastback roof, coupe appearance, and added roof mechanism matter more than minimizing price and complexity.
4. 2026 Ford Mustang Convertible: best if “small” is flexible
The 2026 Ford Mustang Convertible is a relevant alternative for shoppers who want open-air driving but need more presence, rear-seat access, or straight-line performance than the Miata offers. Ford’s 2026 builder confirms convertible availability in the EcoBoost and EcoBoost Premium configurations and identifies convertible availability elsewhere in the lineup, including GT Premium configurations.
It should not be ranked as the best small convertible on size-for-size criteria. The Mustang is a larger performance convertible with a broader model range and a different personality. Its advantages are the available rear seating, stronger performance potential, more substantial road presence, and muscle-car identity.
