There is no single best shock absorber for every scooter, and no product can guarantee a smooth ride across different vehicles and riders. Start with the exact scooter make, model, and year, then confirm the shock’s application, mounting points, and dimensions. Only after fitment is established should you compare adjustment features and set the suspension for the rider, passenger, luggage, and roads.
First, identify what kind of scooter you have
The product examples below are for gas-powered motor scooters. They should not be assumed to fit an electric kick scooter: the title alone does not identify the vehicle, shock location, or dimensions. For a specific recommendation, you need the scooter’s make, model, year, and the shock’s location, along with relevant load and riding conditions.
For a replacement, begin with the scooter maker’s specified part or a shock whose manufacturer explicitly lists your exact application. A shock that looks similar—or has an adjustable spring setting—is not necessarily compatible.
How to confirm a shock will fit
- Record the scooter’s identity. Note its make, model, and year. Check the shock manufacturer’s application information for that exact vehicle.
- Compare the mounting arrangement. Confirm that the shock’s attachment points and mounting type match the scooter. Do not assume that parts with similar-looking mounts interchange.
- Check the dimensions against model-specific information. Compare the listed length and other relevant specifications with the scooter’s parts or service information. A length published for another model is not a sizing standard.
- Confirm setup and use. Consider rider and passenger weight, luggage, and the roads you ride. Use the scooter’s manual and the shock manufacturer’s instructions for setup.
Application and dimensions are the first filter. Preload adjustment is a setup feature, not proof of fit.

What to compare after fitment is confirmed
- Adjustments: Check whether preload is adjustable and what the manufacturer says it is intended to accommodate. Do not infer other performance benefits from the presence of an adjustment.
- Spring and damping specifications: Compare these only when manufacturers publish details for the exact compatible options. Specifications for one model do not establish how competing shocks perform on another.
- Serviceability: Check whether the manufacturer describes the shock as serviceable or repairable, and what that means for your ownership and maintenance needs.
- Purchase conditions: Verify current fitment, price, stock, seller terms, and regional availability before ordering; these can change.
One premium example: Öhlins STX 36 for specified Vespa GTS models
Öhlins lists its STX 36 Scooter shock, part PI 903, for specified Vespa GTS 150/300 applications. The product listing describes an emulsion-type monotube design with adjustable preload and identifies the shock as serviceable and repairable. This is an example for the listed Vespa applications, not a universal scooter recommendation.
Öhlins’ current product page lists a 36 mm piston diameter and application-specific right/left lengths of 324/328 mm with strokes of 84/88 mm. Why product lengths cannot be used as general sizing advice
Other manufacturer listings illustrate how model-specific shock specifications are. KITACO lists product P520-0088010 at 250 mm, with single-step preload, and contrasts it with a stated 240 mm stock length for the relevant listing. Separate KITACO listings for products P520-1124010 and 37323 report lengths of 260 mm and 300 mm, respectively, with five-step cam preload. These figures belong to those individual listings and applications; they do not indicate what length another scooter needs.

Set preload for load using the scooter’s instructions
Preload changes how the spring is set up; it does not make an incompatible shock fit. The KYMCO X-Town CT 125 service instructions describe five preload positions for different loads and conditions, with higher settings making the rear suspension stiffer for heavier loads. The KYMCO Austria suspension guidance covers the model addressed by its manual. Follow the manual for your own scooter rather than transferring another model’s settings: KYMCO Austria, “13. For paired rear shocks, the cited KYMCO X-Town service information says to set both shocks to the same position. Its listed 40 N·m upper and lower mount bolt torque is specific to that model and procedure; it must not be reused as a torque specification for another scooter. Consult the correct service manual or a qualified mechanic for installation steps and torque values: KYMCO X-Town CT 125 service-manual reproduction.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you about comfort
Product listings and service instructions can establish fitment details, specifications, and setup guidance. They do not establish which shock is the smoothest across scooters: the available material does not include an independent comparative ride test or a published comfort statistic. Comfort also depends on correct fitment and setup for the vehicle, load, and riding conditions. Avoid treating a product description or an adjustable preload feature as a guarantee of a smoother ride.
