The right Segway scooter depends on your route, not a single “best” range number. For a longer commute, the US F2 support-page model offers a listed theoretical range of 25 miles; for lighter carrying and a shorter, slower ride, the older E2 support-page model is lighter but slower and has a lower payload limit. These are distinct model listings, not interchangeable specifications. Match the exact version to your distance, speed needs, rider weight, terrain and whether you will carry it.
How to choose a Segway scooter for your route
Start with a useful prompt: how far do you need to ride between charges? Then consider the parts of the trip a range figure cannot answer on its own: your pace, stops, hills, pavement, rider payload and where you will store or carry the scooter. Segway’s official pages identify the F2 as a commuter scooter; the specifications below do not establish that these models are suited to rugged off-road riding.
- Distance: Compare the stated range and its test conditions with your full round trip, leaving a practical margin rather than treating the maximum as guaranteed.
- Speed: Pick a model whose listed maximum fits your needs and local rules; maximum speed is not a recommended speed for every route.
- Carrying: Compare net weight and folded dimensions for stairs, transit or a car trunk. Folded dimensions are not stated in the cited pages below.
- Fit: Check maximum payload, tire construction, brakes, lighting and any suspension details on the exact model page. The cited pages do not establish suspension details for the models compared here.
- Conditions: Check the water-resistance rating and charging time, and verify local laws and use restrictions for the place you intend to ride.
How the listed models compare
These figures come from different Segway support pages and product pages. The older E2 listing is not the same product specification as the US E2 Series II page. The D series figures are for the European product family; they should not be used to infer US availability or specifications.

Which Segway scooter fits which kind of ride?
For a commuter trip where range and payload matter: F2
The cited F2 support listing combines a 25-mile theoretical range with a separately stated 18-mile range at maximum speed, a 265-pound payload limit and an 18 mph maximum. That makes it the most capable option among the two older US support listings here for a rider prioritizing the longer stated range or higher payload. It also weighs 37.9 pounds, so account for that if you must carry it regularly. The 18% slope figure is a listed maximum, not a promise that every hill or route will feel suitable.
For a shorter, lower-speed ride and lighter carry: older E2
The cited E2 support listing weighs 31.3 pounds and has a lower 12.4 mph maximum speed and 198-pound maximum payload. Its stated typical range is 12.4 miles, distinct from its 15.5-mile theoretical range. This listing may suit a shorter trip where its lower speed and payload limit fit the rider and route. Do not apply these figures to E2 Series II.
For an E2 Series II choice: distinguish E2 from E2 Plus II
On Segway’s US E2 Series II page, the E2 Plus II has a higher listed maximum speed than the E2, while both models list a 90 kg maximum rider weight and the same mode-based range claims. The page reports approximate weights of 15 kg for E2 and 16.8 kg for E2 Plus II. These are product claims under stated test conditions, not a direct guarantee of everyday distance.

For a European D-series shortlist
The European page lists three ranges—up to 18 km for D18E, 28 km for D28E and 38 km for D38E—and a maximum speed up to 25 km/h. The source does not support assuming these models or specifications are available in another market.
Why advertised range differs from your ride
“Theoretical,” “typical” and “up to” range are not equivalent guarantees. Segway’s US E2 Series II page says its Eco-mode figure of up to 25 km was measured at an average 15 km/h on pavement with a full battery, a 75 kg load and a 25°C ambient temperature. It says speed, starts and stops, and ambient temperature affect range. The page gives a separate sport-mode claim of up to 20 km under the respective model’s sport speed.
Segway’s F Series manual describes a typical-range test using a 75 kg load at 25°C, riding on pavement at an average 60% of maximum speed under full power. That is context for a manufacturer test method, not a specification for every Segway model or a prediction for a particular rider. Hills, frequent acceleration, temperature and pace can make a real trip differ from a controlled range figure.

Tires and surface
The F2 support listing specifies 10-inch self-sealing tubeless tires; the older E2 listing specifies 8.1-inch inner-hollow tires. Tire type and size are relevant to comfort and maintenance, but the listed specifications alone do not establish how either scooter will perform on a particular surface. The cited pages do not provide comparable suspension details for these models.

The E2 Series II US page lists front electronic and rear drum brakes, a front light and rear brake light. It gives an IPX4 rating, describing protection from splashing water from any angle, and says not to charge the scooter when wet or in a moist environment. The older E2 listing also gives IPX4, while the cited F2 listing gives IPX5. These are water-resistance ratings, not claims that a scooter is waterproof or safe to ride or charge in all wet conditions.

Weight, charging and carrying
The older E2 listing is 6.6 pounds lighter than the cited F2 listing, but has lower listed payload and range. Segway lists approximate charging times of 7.5 hours for that E2 and 6.5 hours for the cited F2. For all models, assess whether the weight and charging routine work for your storage and schedule. Folded dimensions are not stated in the cited specifications, so check the exact version’s current product page or manual before buying if storage space is tight.
Confirm the exact version and local rules before buying
Names such as F2, E2, E2 Plus II and D38E identify different models or generations. Specifications from one support page should not be transferred to a similarly named scooter. Verify the model code, market page and current manual for the scooter actually offered where you live.
Segway’s E2 Series II page gives manufacturer age recommendations of 16+ for E2 and 14+ for E2 Plus II. Those recommendations do not determine legal eligibility. Public-road access, minimum rider age, helmet requirements, speed limits and other restrictions depend on location; check the relevant local authority before riding. Manufacturer specification pages are not independent safety evaluations, so equipment lists should not be treated as proof that one model is objectively safer.
Current stock, price and warranty were not established by the cited sources. Check those details for the exact regional model and seller, along with any model-specific parts or support information, before committing.
For additional model detail, Segway’s F3 Series User Manual is available, but the cited material does not support a detailed comparison of F3 models with the scooters above.
