The best match for a trunk-ready air compressor and “battery charger” is a portable jump starter with a built-in tire inflator. It can inflate a tire and provide a starting boost to a compatible vehicle, but a jump starter does not necessarily recharge the vehicle’s battery. Chevrolet’s listing for the NOCO AX65 explicitly says it does not recharge the car battery.
What is the best portable air compressor and battery charger for my trunk?
If by “battery charger” you mean a device that can help start a car with a weak 12-volt battery, look for a portable jump starter with air compressor. One example is the NOCO AX65, listed by Chevrolet Accessories as a 12-volt, 2,000-amp jump starter with a 22-amp, 100-PSI compressor. The listing also describes a pressure sensor and automatic control. These are the seller’s published specifications, not independent comparative test results. See the NOCO AX65 listing.
Chevrolet lists the AX65 for gasoline engines up to 8.0 liters and diesel engines up to 6.0 liters. Those limits apply to that product listing only; check the specific unit’s instructions and your vehicle requirements before relying on them. A larger amp or PSI figure by itself does not establish that a device is the right fit for your car or tire.
Can a portable jump starter charge a car battery?
Usually, a jump starter provides a temporary boost to help crank the engine; it is not a substitute for a battery charger that replenishes the vehicle battery. Chevrolet’s FAQ for the NOCO AX65 explicitly states that the unit does not recharge the vehicle battery. If the battery needs recharging or repeatedly loses charge, use a suitable battery charger or have the vehicle and battery checked rather than treating a jump-start as a repair. Can one device inflate a tire and jump-start a car?
Yes. Several products combine an inflator and jump-starting clamps, though their published capabilities and features differ. The figures below are claims from each manufacturer or product listing, not results of a side-by-side independent test.

How should you choose a trunk-ready combo unit?
- Vehicle compatibility: Check the maker’s supported engine type and size, and follow any vehicle-specific restrictions. Do not assume one model’s engine rating applies to another.
- Inflator controls: Look for a clear pressure gauge and, if useful, automatic shutoff. Confirm the unit can be set to the pressure specified for your tire.
- Practical operation: Consider the device’s size, how it is powered and charged, its power outputs, and whether its instructions are manageable at the roadside.
- Evidence behind claims: Published peak amps and maximum PSI are specifications, not independent proof of starting or inflation performance. No independent side-by-side test is established for the products listed here.
- Charging method: Charge the device only as its manual specifies. A historical NHTSA interpretation records two complaints about a portable pump’s rechargeable battery allegedly exploding while charging through a vehicle accessory outlet; the document says the manufacturer revised instructions to permit charging only from household AC. Can you jump-start an electric or hybrid car?
Do not try to jump-start an EV or hybrid’s high-voltage traction battery. NHTSA says that battery cannot be jump-started; in most cases, the vehicle’s separate 12-volt battery can be jump-started by following the vehicle-specific instructions. What should you do before using a combo unit?
- Read your vehicle owner’s manual for jump-start instructions, connection points and any restrictions. NHTSA recommends using the manual for the procedure and battery location.
- Check the device manual for supported vehicles, clamp connections, compressor operation and the approved way to recharge the unit.
- Use the vehicle’s specified tire pressure and the inflator’s gauge or automatic shutoff as directed by its maker.
- Stop if instructions conflict or conditions look unsafe, and call roadside assistance rather than improvising.
