There is no single engine oil that fits every Mercedes-Benz Sprinter diesel. The right oil depends on your Sprinter’s model year, engine, market, and the Mercedes-Benz oil approvals and SAE viscosity classes listed in its own owner’s manual. Match all of those requirements before buying or topping up.
Which oil does a Mercedes Sprinter diesel take?
Use an oil carrying an MB approval permitted by the manual for your exact Sprinter, and choose a viscosity grade allowed by that same manual. Do not rely on a general recommendation for “Sprinter diesel”: requirements vary by engine family and model year.
For example, a June 2023 Sprinter owner’s manual excerpt lists the following approvals for the named engine families. This is an example from that manual, not a specification for every Sprinter or market.
| Engine family in the June 2023 manual | Listed engine-oil approvals |
|---|---|
| OM642 | MB 229.31, MB 229.51, MB 229.52 |
| OM651 | MB 229.31, MB 229.51, MB 229.52 |
| OM654 | MB 229.31, MB 229.51, MB 229.52, MB 229.71 |
These approval listings come from the June 2023 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter owner’s manual. A December 2021 Sprinter manual result also shows engine-family-specific differences, so do not transfer a table from one model year to another. Consult the manual for your vehicle or VIN-specific Mercedes-Benz guidance if the information does not match.

How to choose the right oil
- Identify the exact vehicle. Confirm the model year and engine code, and use the owner’s manual for the vehicle’s market. If you cannot identify the engine, use your vehicle documentation or ask a Mercedes-Benz service provider to confirm it by VIN.
- Find the permitted MB approval. Look for the approval number in the manual’s engine-oil section. Then check that the oil container or product documentation states that exact MB approval—not merely that the oil is intended for diesel engines.
- Check the SAE viscosity restrictions. Select a viscosity class allowed by the manual, including any stated temperature or operating conditions. The June 2023 manual recommends the lowest permitted SAE viscosity class for the lowest possible fuel consumption, while still requiring compliance with its viscosity restrictions.
- Confirm both details before purchase or use. The oil must meet the required approval and fit the permitted viscosity class. If either detail is unclear, verify it against the vehicle’s manual or VIN-specific guidance rather than substituting a general Sprinter recommendation.
Why 5W-30 alone is not enough
SAE viscosity describes an oil’s grade; it does not establish that the oil carries a Mercedes-Benz approval required by a particular Sprinter. An oil labeled 5W-30 is not automatically suitable. Check its stated MB approval as well as whether 5W-30 is permitted for your engine and conditions.
Is Mercedes-Benz Genuine Engine Oil MB 229.52 suitable?
Mercedes-Benz lists its Genuine Engine Oil under MB 229.52 on its official MB 229.52 approval sheet. That makes it a product option only for a Sprinter whose own manual permits MB 229.52 and the particular oil’s viscosity grade. The approval alone does not establish that it is right for every Sprinter.

Mercedes-Benz describes its approval sheets as lists of approved products and points to sheet 223.2 for prescribed service oils. Check the current Mercedes-Benz operating-fluids approvals and your vehicle’s manual before selecting a product; product listing is not a substitute for the vehicle-specific requirements.

Mercedes-Benz warns in the Sprinter owner’s manual: “The use of other engine oils not approved for diesel engines can damage the diesel particulate filter (DPF).” Treat the approval requirement as a specification, not a brand preference. If you are unsure whether an oil is approved for your vehicle, do not assume that a similar viscosity or a diesel label makes it acceptable.

What to do if the manual and oil label do not match
- If the approval on the container is not one of the approvals permitted by your manual, choose a different oil.
- If the oil’s viscosity grade is not permitted for the vehicle or current conditions, do not use it on the basis of its approval number alone.
- If your manual is missing, appears to differ from a general online table, or does not identify your engine clearly, use VIN-specific Mercedes-Benz guidance. Do not resolve the discrepancy by extrapolating from another Sprinter year or engine.
