Best Motorcycle GPS Mounts: How to Choose a Secure, Compatible Setup

A motorcycle GPS mount is a system: match the device cradle to your GPS, verify the bike-side attachment and included hardware, and follow the installation manual.

The right motorcycle GPS mount is a compatible system, not just a bracket: check the cradle for your exact GPS, the motorcycle-side attachment kit, and the fit around your cockpit before ordering. Garmin and RAM offer different device and attachment options, but the available product information does not establish one universally safest or most durable mount.

What makes up a motorcycle GPS mount?

A mounting setup can include a GPS cradle or device-specific bracket, a motorcycle-side base or kit, an arm, fasteners and—if the GPS is powered on the bike—a cable and wiring. A product listing may include only some of these parts. Check the package contents and identify any separately required hardware before you buy.

Compatibility is specific to the GPS generation and the mount. Garmin says its Moto Mount Bracket, part 010-13879-02, is for the zūmo XT3; it attaches to motorcycle handlebars using a separate mounting kit. Garmin’s zūmo XT-series accessory information lists options for XT, XT2 and XT3. If you are replacing a GPS, do not assume the old device cradle will fit the new one: Garmin notes that some RAM mounting kits can remain in use while zūmo device series require different motorcycle mounts, and that some older motorcycle mounts have been discontinued. Verify the part number for your GPS and bike before ordering.

Garmin Moto Mount Bracket, 010-13879-02 zūmo XT3 Handlebar attachment Garmin says a separate mounting kit is needed. The product page listed a price of $19.99 and shipping availability of 1–3 business days when observed; both may change. Garmin product page.
Garmin XT-series mounting accessories Options vary across zūmo XT, XT2 and XT3 Handlebar, motorcycle post, or other mount options as listed for the generation Garmin says the Handlebar Mount Kit comes with the 6-inch XT3 and works with either XT3 size; the Motorcycle Post-mount comes with the 4.7-inch XT3 and also works with either size. Handlebar, clamp and post locations

Garmin’s mounting materials describe handlebar installation as well as clutch-clamp or brake-clamp brackets for the referenced zūmo 3×0 setup. Garmin’s XT3 accessory options also include a motorcycle post-mount. RAM’s cited legacy products show handlebar and brake/clutch reservoir approaches. Which location works depends on the bike’s cockpit, the mount’s fitment and the room available for the GPS and cables.

Viewing angle and cockpit clearance

Before final tightening, check that you can see and reach the screen from your normal riding position without blocking essential instruments or controls. Turn the handlebars through their full range and check that the GPS, mount and cable do not foul the tank, fairing or other motorcycle parts. Garmin’s zūmo 590 instructions specifically warn that sustained contact between the base plate or mount and the motorcycle can damage that mount over time; those instructions call for spacers and no contact. Apply that instruction to the cited zūmo 590 assembly, and consult the manual for your own model.

How to choose a mount that fits your setup

  1. Identify the exact GPS. Record its model and generation, including XT, XT2 or XT3 where applicable. Search the manufacturer’s compatibility listing for that specific device rather than relying on a broad “Garmin” or “zūmo” label.
  2. Choose an attachment point that fits the bike. Check the handlebar diameter and available space, or confirm that a clamp, reservoir or post mount is expressly compatible with your motorcycle and cockpit. The cited product listings do not establish universal bike fit.
  3. Inventory the included hardware. Determine whether the listing supplies the GPS cradle or bracket, bike-side base or kit, arm, fasteners and any required spacers. For Garmin’s XT3 Moto Mount Bracket, a separate mounting kit is required for handlebar attachment.
  4. Decide whether the GPS will be powered from the motorcycle. A powered cradle may require a motorcycle power cable and electrical installation. Check the exact manual for cable routing and connection requirements before choosing a location.
  5. Check adjustability and clearance in place. Position the device for a usable viewing angle, then verify full steering movement and clearance from the motorcycle. Follow any spacers or no-contact instructions in the model-specific manual.
  6. Install using the instructions for that mount. Use only its specified fasteners, sequence and torque. Do not carry over torque values from a different Garmin mount or GPS generation.

Installation and electrical safety

Garmin’s zūmo installation instructions say to select a suitable, secure mounting location with power availability and safe cable routing in mind. For the specific U-bolt hardware in the referenced zūmo 3×0 guide, Garmin gives a recommended torque of 50 lbf-in and a maximum of 80 lbf-in. These figures apply to that setup only; use the instructions supplied for your exact mount and GPS.

For powered installations, Garmin warns that incorrect wiring can damage the motorcycle or battery and cause bodily injury. Its instructions state: “Garmin® strongly recommends having an experienced installer with the proper knowledge of electrical systems install the device.” The guidance is from the referenced zūmo installation instructions; consult the manual for the device and mount being installed.

Is there one best or safest motorcycle GPS mount?

The available manufacturer listings establish product compatibility claims and installation considerations, but they do not provide a controlled comparison across motorcycles, vibration profiles, mounting locations or riding conditions. That evidence cannot support a universal safest, most durable or best-performing choice. The practical choice is the mount whose device compatibility, motorcycle attachment, included hardware, adjustment and installation instructions match your specific setup.
