There is no single best OBD2 scanner for every Mercedes-Benz. A basic generic reader can handle many check-engine and emissions-related questions; ABS, airbag, transmission, suspension, and body diagnostics generally require a Mercedes-compatible full-system tool. For workshop-level guided diagnostics and manufacturer workflows, consider the current XENTRY options and their eligibility limits. Before buying, match the scanner’s supported modules and functions to your exact model year, chassis, equipment, and intended job.
What is the best OBD2 scanner for Mercedes-Benz in 2026?
The right choice depends on what you need the scanner to do. Use this guide to choose a tool category first, then verify support for your vehicle identification number (VIN) and the particular operation—not merely the brand name or a list of advertised features.

Will any OBD2 scanner work on a Mercedes?
No. A generic OBD-II reader may communicate with the engine control system for standard emissions-related codes and readiness data, but it may not communicate with Mercedes ABS, SRS, transmission, suspension, or body modules. Even a full-system label does not prove that every function works on every Mercedes. Check module access for the target year, chassis, and equipment, then confirm the exact operation you need. Reading a fault code, clearing it, running an active test, performing a service reset, and coding a module are separate capabilities.

Can a Mercedes scanner reset ABS or airbag lights?
Some Mercedes-compatible full-system scanners can read and clear faults in ABS and SRS/airbag modules, but capability varies by vehicle and tool. Confirm that the scanner covers the particular module and supports clearing its fault memory on your VIN. Clearing a code is not a repair: if the underlying fault remains, the warning may return. Do these scanners support service resets, active tests, and diesel procedures?
These are distinct functions; a scanner that reads a module’s codes may not perform its maintenance procedures or control its components. Verify the specific function and vehicle before purchase.
Maintenance and replacement procedures

Bidirectional tests
A bidirectional scanner can command supported components, but that does not mean it can actuate every component in every module. Confirm the precise actuator test and vehicle coverage. MB Medic’s scanner overview
Diesel-specific functions
For Mercedes diesel vehicles, relevant functions may include DPF regeneration, AdBlue/SCR resets, NOx adaptation, or injector coding. Availability is vehicle- and tool-dependent; a generic diesel feature list is not confirmation that a procedure is supported on your vehicle. Can these scanners code a Mercedes?
Some advanced aftermarket tools support selected coding or adaptations on certain vehicles. That is not equivalent to universal ECU programming, module commissioning, or every factory server-based function. Check the exact coding task, module, VIN, and any required software or online access before relying on an aftermarket tool.

For manufacturer workflows, Mercedes-Benz’s XENTRY platform is the official option. Its published XENTRY Diagnosis Kit 4 functions include quick tests, actuations, actual and specified values, and guided troubleshooting. XENTRY Pass Thru EU is an option for eligible independent market participants, not a universal consumer scanner. Mercedes describes it as an open-shell XENTRY variant used with a standard PC and a customary Pass Thru device. Its published functions include quick tests, basic diagnostics, reading and clearing fault memory, guided and functional diagnostics, and flashing and coding subject to device limitations. Coverage is limited to certain Euro 5/6 passenger cars and vans and pure battery electric vehicles; Mercedes says it does not support every model type and directs users needing all model series to its standard diagnostic solution. The EU Pass Thru service has a yearly flat user fee plus additional time-based diagnostic data charges. Ordering is restricted to users with an office in the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, or the UK. Mercedes lists Actia Passthru+ XS 2G, Bosch KTS 560, and ADIS Technology EURO VCI as tested and recommended general Pass Thru devices. Do older Mercedes cars need a 38-pin adapter?
Some older Mercedes vehicles use a round 38-pin diagnostic port. If your vehicle has that connector and your scanner uses a different plug, you may need a physical adapter. The adapter only solves the connector mismatch: it does not add Mercedes software, module access, or support for a requested diagnostic function. Does the scanner need DoIP or CAN FD?
Some newer platforms may require protocol support such as DoIP or CAN FD for the intended diagnostic work. A protocol badge alone does not prove that a scanner supports your vehicle’s modules or functions; confirm compatibility by VIN and operation.
For XENTRY Pass Thru EU, Mercedes identifies pure DoIP model series introduced with series 206 and 223 and names Star Cooperation OBD2 Adapter and Softing OBD Adapter on RJ45 as tested for those series. Mercedes says those adapters must be used exclusively with XENTRY Pass Thru for the pure DoIP series. - Identify the vehicle. Record its model year, chassis or series, engine, equipment, and VIN. Note which diagnostic connector it uses, especially if it is an older vehicle.
- Name the task. Decide whether you need generic engine codes, access to a specific module, a service reset, an active test, coding, or a factory-guided procedure.
- Check the exact coverage. Ask the tool maker or seller whether the scanner supports that module and operation on your exact vehicle—not just Mercedes-Benz in general.
- Check the complete setup. Confirm connector or adapter, communication protocol, computer or phone requirements, app access, updates, subscriptions, and any online account or territory restrictions that apply.
- Keep the task’s limits in view. Fault-code access does not guarantee a reset, adaptation, actuation, coding, or programming function. Choose the least complex tool that reliably supports the job you have.
Which option fits your situation?
- Occasional check-engine diagnosis: A generic OBD-II reader may be enough if you only need emissions-related engine codes or readiness data.
- Warnings outside the engine system or routine service work: Look at Mercedes-compatible full-system scanners and verify the required modules and procedures by VIN.
- Repeated workshop work or manufacturer-guided diagnosis: Evaluate the current XENTRY product and its regional availability. Consider XENTRY Pass Thru EU only if you meet its eligibility, territory, hardware, and coverage requirements.
Commercial guides name products such as EDIAG Elite, ThinkDiag 2, K8 Pro, and YOUCANIC scanners, but those recommendations are not independent comparative tests.
