Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid: efficient, but confirm the seat count by trim
Hyundai lists its 2026 Santa Fe Hybrid FWD at 37 city, 36 highway and 36 combined mpg. The company calls it its most fuel-efficient three-row SUV and says FWD models achieve up to an EPA-estimated 36 mpg combined. That is Hyundai’s own model-range claim, not an independent comparison of every brand. Because the page’s three-row description does not settle seating capacity for every configuration, check the exact trim and second-row layout before treating it as a seven-seater. Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid: more size and powertrain choice, with ratings that vary
Toyota lists the 2026 Grand Highlander Hybrid XLE at an estimated 37 city and 34 highway mpg. Other regular-hybrid trims are listed around 36 city and 32 highway mpg, while Hybrid MAX models prioritize performance over economy: Toyota lists the Hybrid MAX Platinum AWD at 26 city, 27 highway and 27 combined mpg. Toyota says the Grand Highlander seats up to eight, but the actual capacity depends on the second-row seating configuration. Toyota Highlander Hybrid: consistent ratings across listed trims

Subaru Ascent: a gas-only alternative, not an MPG leader
The 2026 Ascent is a conventional-gas option with seven- or eight-seat configurations. Subaru lists up to 19 city and 26 highway mpg; its cited page does not state a combined figure. Check these details before choosing a seven-seater
- Seat count on the exact trim: A model name does not guarantee seven seats. A second-row bench can seat more people than captain’s chairs, and some configurations or trims may differ. Confirm the listed capacity and inspect the actual vehicle.
- Third-row fit: Bring the people who will use the back row, if practical. A nominal seat count does not tell you whether the row is comfortable for your passengers or how easy it is to reach.
- Cargo with every row occupied: Check how much luggage space remains behind the third row. A three-row SUV’s cargo capacity with the back row folded does not answer the family-trip question.
- Drivetrain and powertrain: Match the rating to the exact FWD or AWD version, trim and engine. The Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX illustrates how a different powertrain can deliver a materially different MPG figure.
- How you drive: Compare the EPA estimate with your likely mix of city streets and highway miles; a city-heavy or highway-heavy commute may make the respective rating more useful than the combined number.
- Total ownership fit: Weigh purchase price, annual mileage, passenger needs and the roads you drive. A small MPG advantage may not outweigh a seating or cargo mismatch for your household.
What EPA estimates can—and cannot—tell you
EPA estimates make it easier to compare vehicles under standardized test procedures; they are not a promise of the mileage your family will achieve. Toyota notes that actual fuel economy varies with driving conditions and vehicle condition. Passenger and cargo load, route and driving habits can also make your use differ from the estimate. Keep each figure tied to its model year and configuration rather than treating it as a rating for every vehicle with that name.
