There was no single best motorhome or camper van in 2022: the notable launches and designs served very different needs, from compact road travel to off-road camping, expandable truck-bed living and full-size adventure coaches. This retrospective covers New Atlas’s year-end selection, published December 26, 2022, which included full-size camper vans over 5 m (16.4 ft) and expanding truck campers. It is an editorial roundup, not a scored comparison or a record of vehicles all available to buy that year.
How to compare the 2022 picks
Start by matching the vehicle format to how you travel. A two-person off-roader, a van intended for ordinary roads, an expandable pickup camper and a 45-foot motor coach are not direct substitutes. Then compare the practical details the available launch information actually establishes:
- Size and maneuverability: use the stated length as a first filter, but do not infer handling or parking ease from length alone.
- Travel seats versus beds: belted positions indicate seating for travel; sleeping capacity is a separate figure and may depend on optional equipment.
- Living layout: check how bathroom, shower, kitchen and sleeping areas work in the configuration you would use.
- Drivetrain and terrain: distinguish a van or coach from a vehicle explicitly described for off-road use.
- Off-grid equipment: compare named water, solar, battery and inverter specifications. Those figures do not establish real-world autonomy.
- Vehicle status: a production launch, a model introduced for the following year, a concept and a prototype are different kinds of choices.
Standout motorhomes and camper vans
Hymer Venture S: an off-road-focused two-person design
Hymer announced the Venture S market launch on August 24, 2022. It is based on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis cowl and was described by the manufacturer as a two-person off-roader with standard all-wheel drive. Its signature feature is an inflatable “Instant Loft” pop-top; Hymer said it inflates in less than three minutes. Other named design elements include a rear glass “Infinity Screen,” an integrated stairway and a washroom that transforms into a shower.
Hymer’s listed equipment includes a 120-litre fresh-water tank, three 115-watt roof solar panels, 320 Ah lithium batteries and a standard inverter. The company claimed up to 10 days of self-sufficiency. That is Hymer’s stated claim, not an independently verified endurance result; actual autonomy would depend on use and conditions not specified in the launch material.

Hymer president Christian Bauer said the company had “reimagined motorhoming from the ground up” while drawing inspiration from the van-life community. That is the manufacturer’s positioning, rather than an independent assessment.
Knaus Tourer Van: compact length with a reconfigurable bathroom
Knaus Tabbert’s 2022 material describes the semi-integrated Tourer Van as VW T6.1-based and 5.88 m long, with two layouts. The 500 MQ layout makes an unusual trade: its height-adjustable shower lowers so the adjoining mattress can rest over it. Raised, the shower provides 1.90 m of standing height. Optional front sleeping increases the stated accommodation to as many as four people.

The listed kitchen equipment includes a 90-litre compressor fridge and a two-burner hob. The key appeal is not simply its length, but the way the 500 MQ reuses bathroom space to make room for sleeping. The sleeping configuration and optional front bed should be checked against the specific layout and equipment being considered.
Airstream Rangeline: a Class B with distinct seating and sleeping counts
Airstream announced the Rangeline on September 13, 2022 as a 21-foot Class B motorhome based on the Ram ProMaster 3500. Its release specifies a 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 rated at 276 hp and paired with a nine-speed automatic. These are launch specifications, not independent road-test findings.

The release lists four belted travel positions and two standard sleeping places. An optional pop-top raises sleeping capacity to four. That distinction matters for families or groups: the four-bed figure does not mean four standard beds, nor does it change the stated number of belted travel positions. Airstream’s president described it as a van that “handles like a daily driver”; that is promotional language, not a measured handling result.
Other notable designs in the 2022 roundup
New Atlas also selected vehicles that broaden what “motorhome” and “expanding RV” can mean. Its descriptions identify several as concepts or prototypes rather than established production choices.

Which type makes the most sense?
The 2022 selection is most useful as a map of different approaches, not as a universal ranking. Match the format to your priorities, and treat the stated figures as manufacturer or roundup descriptions rather than comparative test results.
- For two-person off-grid-oriented travel: the Venture S is the clearest match among the detailed examples because Hymer specified all-wheel drive and named its water and electrical equipment. Its claimed 10-day self-sufficiency has not been independently established.
- For a shorter vehicle with a space-saving bathroom: the 5.88 m Tourer Van 500 MQ stands out for its convertible shower-and-mattress arrangement. Verify which layout and optional sleeping equipment are included.
- For a van with four travel seats and optional four-person sleeping: the Rangeline explicitly separates its four belted positions from its two standard sleeping places and optional pop-top capacity.
- For an expandable pickup setup or very large adventure vehicle: the Cube, Beauer, Loki and EarthRoamer entries represent markedly different scales and formats. The roundup descriptions alone do not provide enough comparable specifications to rank them.
- For future-facing technology: the NEXSD One prototype and Thor Vision Vehicle concept are design statements, not evidence of ordinary retail availability.
What the 2022 selection can—and cannot—establish
The roundup and manufacturer releases provide launch descriptions and selected specifications, but no common scoring method, controlled comparative test or independent result that establishes an objective winner. They also do not settle present-day pricing, dealer stock, market-specific specifications, safety ratings, reliability or production status for every entry. Because this is a historical 2022 selection, current purchase decisions require checking the exact model, market and equipment with the manufacturer or seller.
