There is no single best midsize truck for every buyer. In the 2026 rankings from MotorTrend and Car and Driver, the Ford Ranger, Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Honda Ridgeline and Nissan Frontier suit different priorities—and the publishers do not rank or score them identically. The Ranger is a strong starting point for balanced daily driving and truck use; the Tacoma offers a broad range of body styles and trims; and dedicated off-road versions are better matched to buyers who prioritize specific kinds of terrain. Choose by the exact cab, bed, equipment and capability you need, not by a ranking alone.
This is a US-market guide to 2026 model-year pickups based on published ratings and manufacturer information, not hands-on testing. “Midsize” is not a single official boundary shared by every source: the publishers’ lists and the IIHS small-pickup table use their own categories. The Gladiator appears in broader coverage and the IIHS table; it is included here as an off-road alternative, not as one of the six main models compared across the ranking sources.
Which midsize truck is best for your kind of driving?
- For a balanced daily driver that still does truck work: Start with the Ford Ranger. Car and Driver describes its towing and payload as competitive and its ride and road manners as compliant; MotorTrend places it first in its 2026 list. Those are the publications’ assessments, not results from testing for this guide.
- For a wide choice of configurations and use cases: Compare Toyota Tacoma body styles and trims. Car and Driver highlights that range, while MotorTrend ranks the Tacoma behind the Ranger, Colorado and Canyon. The differing judgments make a configuration-level comparison more useful than treating either ranking as a universal verdict.
- For a more upscale off-road trim: Consider the GMC Canyon AT4X. Edmunds, in a recommendation carried by the Associated Press, distinguishes it from other off-road choices for its more upscale feature set.
- For a truck bed designed around everyday utility: Look closely at the Honda Ridgeline and compare its bed features with the conventional truck features you need.
- For specialized off-road driving: Choose a trim for the terrain—technical trails, desert speed or open-air trail use are not the same job.
How do the 2026 midsize-truck ratings and prices compare?
The scores below belong to separate editorial systems; they are not a common test scale. Car and Driver’s listed starting prices are its page values accessed October 8, 2026, not verified transaction prices or guarantees of current manufacturer pricing. Confirm the price and equipment for the exact truck before buying.
| Truck | MotorTrend 2026 ranking | Car and Driver rating | Car and Driver listed starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford Ranger | 1st, 9.5/10 | 9/10 | $35,445 |
| Chevrolet Colorado | 2nd, 9.3/10 | 9/10 | $34,495 |
| GMC Canyon | 3rd, 9.0/10 | 9/10 | $40,995 |
| Honda Ridgeline | 4th, 8.8/10 | 8.5/10 | $42,390 |
| Toyota Tacoma | 5th, 8.5/10 | 9/10 | $34,290 |
| Nissan Frontier | 7th; MotorTrend score not stated on the cited ranking summary | 8/10 | $33,925 |
MotorTrend’s ranking and scores are its editorial judgments; Car and Driver gives the Ranger, Tacoma, Colorado and Canyon the same 9/10 rating, despite differences in its descriptions and the trucks’ listed prices. That is not a contradiction that can be resolved by averaging scores: each publication has its own criteria and judgment. The table also does not establish which truck is cheapest in a comparable configuration, because starting prices do not align trims, cab and bed combinations, or equipment.

- EASY TO INSTALL: Open the tailgate, place the pad on the tailgate, feed the straps from the back to front and connect.
- DIMENSIONS: This tailgate pad is 51" wide – perfect fit for compact pickups (tailgate width>51"), good coverage for mid-size pickups (tailgate width≤56"), partial coverage for full-size pickups (tailgate width≥60").
What to compare before choosing a truck
Price, cab and bed
Use a starting price to narrow the field, then compare the actual trim and configuration you would buy. Confirm whether the cab and bed combination you want is offered with that trim, and check the total price with required equipment. A base or listed starting price does not tell you the cost of a specific build or the price you will pay at a dealer.
Towing and payload for the specific build
For an example of a published manufacturer figure, Chevrolet lists the 2026 Colorado’s 2.7L TurboMax four-cylinder at 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, with a maximum available trailering weight of 7,700 pounds. Chevrolet lists a $32,400 starting MSRP depending on trim. The maximum trailering figure depends on configuration and equipment; it is not a rating for every Colorado. Verify the rating for the exact truck and account for the loaded trailer before deciding it meets your needs. Payload is a separate limit, so check it as well rather than treating a tow rating as a complete measure of hauling capability.
Rank #2
- MID-SIZE TRUCK BED MATTRESS (5.0'-5.2'): Our truck bed air mattress is specifically designed to snugly fit 5.0' to 5.2' mid-size short bed pickup trucks, perfect as a Tacoma truck mattress (5ft), Jeep Gladiator truck bed mattress (5ft), Chevy Colorado (5.2ft), GMC Canyon (5.2ft), Nissan Frontier (5'), Honda Ridgeline (5'), and Dodge Dakota (5.3'). Mattress dimensions: 63"L x 56"W x 10"H (48" width between wheel wells). It is NOT compatible with full-size trucks or 6.0'-6.5' long beds. Please ensure your truck bed length measures between 5.0 and 5.2 feet for a perfect fit before purchasing.
- HIGH-QUALITY & PUNCTURE-PROOF MATERIALS: Our inflatable truck bed mattress features a plush, soft-flocked top surface for maximum sleeping comfort, a heavy-duty PVC construction for reliable support, and an extra-thick 210T grid fabric on the bottom to prevent punctures, tears, and air leakage against rough spray-in bed liners. Ideal as a durable truck tent mattress for overland camping and outdoor road trips.
- HEAVY WEIGHT CAPACITY & ERGONOMIC SUPPORT: Designed with multiple internal wave straps, this truck air mattress distributes weight evenly to prevent sagging or sinking. It can support up to 260 kilograms (600 lbs), comfortably accommodating 2-3 people at once. Its robust construction ensures exceptional durability and optimal spinal support for extended camping use.
- ABUNDANT TRUCK CAMPING ACCESSORIES: The complete truck mattress package includes a high-flow 12V electric air pump, a 1.8-meter power cable to connect directly to your truck’s cigarette lighter socket, 2 inflatable pillows, multiple repair patches for convenience, and a handy oversized storage bag for easy transport and storage.
- DON’T RUSH TO RETURN! (INITIAL USE TIP): When first using the truck bed air mattress, you may think it’s leaking due to the stretching caused by air pressure on the high-grade PVC material. Simply inflate the mattress fully again to allow it to expand. Repeat this process for 2-3 nights until the mattress fully inflates and settles into its final shape. Backed by dedicated customer service for worry-free purchasing.
Ride, cabin and fuel economy
For a truck used mostly on pavement, consider ride comfort and road manners alongside capability. Car and Driver characterizes the Ranger as having a compliant ride and good road manners. For fuel economy, compare the same kind of estimate and the same configuration: Car and Driver presents combined ranges by model, whereas MotorTrend lists up-to city/highway figures. An up-to figure is not directly comparable with a combined range, and neither source’s model-level presentation makes one trim’s estimate universal.
Bed utility and the Ridgeline
Honda’s comparison lists a 50-inch bed width at the wheel wells for the 2026 Ridgeline TrailSport and identifies an in-bed trunk and dual-action tailgate as standard. Honda compares that 2026 trim with 2025 competitor trims, so these figures and feature comparisons are not a same-model-year, same-trim comparison. In the same model-year-mismatched comparison, Honda’s cited Ridgeline payload is below the 2025 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 figure; the comparison does not establish a payload number for every Ridgeline or Colorado configuration. If hauling or fitting a particular load matters, check the specifications for the exact model year and trim.

Which 2026 truck is best for off-roading?
“Off-road” covers different kinds of use. Edmunds’ recommendations, reported by the Associated Press, distinguish these high-end trims by their intended strengths. Their reported starting prices are trim-specific—not entry-level prices for their respective truck lines.
| Off-road trim | Use highlighted by Edmunds via AP | Reported starting price |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 | Technical terrain | $52,795 |
| GMC Canyon AT4X | A more upscale feature set | $59,395 |
| Ford Ranger Raptor | High-speed desert terrain | $58,965 |
| Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro | A broad-use off-roader | $66,045 |
| Jeep Gladiator Rubicon | Trail crawling and open-air use | $54,515 |
These recommendations are not evidence that one trim is best on every trail. Match the vehicle to where and how you drive, then compare the trim’s equipment and price with the truck you would otherwise buy. The Gladiator is included in this off-road comparison because of the cited recommendation; it is outside the six-model core ranking comparison above.

How should you compare midsize-truck safety?
Use the IIHS small-pickup ratings table to compare the exact model-year entry and individual test categories, rather than relying on a single overall impression. The table covers small-overlap, moderate-overlap and side crash tests, headlights, and front-crash-prevention measures. Ratings vary by category, so one strong result does not establish that a truck is safest overall.
IIHS says 2026 Top Safety Pick qualification requires good ratings in specified crash tests, acceptable or good headlights, and an acceptable or good standard pedestrian front-crash-prevention system. Top Safety Pick+ additionally requires a good standard pedestrian system and an acceptable or good vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 rating. Check the model-year entry and whether the rating applies to the trim or headlights you are considering; the available category information does not justify declaring one midsize truck the blanket safety winner.

A practical shortlist before you buy
- Define the job. Write down what you will tow or carry, where you will drive, and how often the truck will serve as a daily vehicle.
- Select the configuration first. Identify the cab, bed and trim you need; then compare prices and capability for those builds rather than comparing model names alone.
- Verify capability. Check the exact truck’s tow rating and payload, along with the loaded weight of your trailer or cargo. Do not substitute a model’s maximum available rating for the rating of your configuration.
- Compare like with like. Separate combined fuel-economy estimates from city/highway figures, and distinguish trim-specific features from standard equipment across a model line.
- Check safety by category. Use the IIHS entry for the model year and trim or headlight applicability that matches the truck you would buy.
- Test the practical details yourself. Sit in the cabin, assess visibility and ride on your normal roads, and confirm that the bed, tailgate and storage suit the loads you actually carry.
