For a 2026 three-row midsize hybrid SUV, start with the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid if usable family space is your priority, the Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid if a lower listed starting MSRP matters most, and the Kia Sorento Hybrid if you want another value-oriented option to compare. The Toyota Highlander Hybrid also belongs on the shortlist, but the current pricing and trim details available here are not sufficient for a direct spec-by-spec comparison.
These are U.S. model-year 2026 choices. The figures below come from different sources and are not a single, apples-to-apples test: official manufacturer specifications, Car and Driver’s independent ranking, and Consumer Reports’ tested-vehicle guide data are identified separately.
2026 midsize hybrid SUV comparison
| Model | Price and economy figures | What it may suit |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid | Toyota lists the standard-hybrid LE at $45,610 MSRP and estimates 36/32 mpg city/highway; those figures are trim-specific. Car and Driver rates the 2026 model 9.5/10 and reports 27–36 mpg combined across the range. | Space-first shoppers. Toyota lists seven- and eight-seat configurations. Hybrid MAX is a separate, higher-performance powertrain with different economy figures. |
| Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid | Hyundai lists the SE at a $36,400 starting MSRP. Its estimates are up to 36 mpg combined for FWD and 34 mpg combined for AWD. Car and Driver rates it 9/10 and reports 34–36 mpg combined. | Shoppers who want the lowest listed starting MSRP among these candidates and a choice of FWD or AWD. |
| Kia Sorento Hybrid | Car and Driver lists a $40,385 starting price, 33–37 mpg combined, and an 8.5/10 rating. | Shoppers seeking a lower-priced three-row alternative to the larger candidates. Check the actual seat arrangement and cargo space for your needs. |
| Toyota Highlander Hybrid | Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide lists 35 mpg and a $47,595 price-survey result for its tested Highlander Hybrid. These are guide figures, not a definitive current EPA estimate or a current trim MSRP. | A relevant candidate to include in a test drive, though the current official trim and pricing detail reviewed here is limited. |
Manufacturer estimates, Car and Driver’s ranking-page figures, and Consumer Reports’ tested-vehicle data use different contexts and configurations. They should not be treated as directly comparable real-world results. No single 2026 real-world fuel-economy test covering all four was established.
Which one should you choose?
Choose the Grand Highlander Hybrid for family space and seat flexibility
Toyota lists the 2026 Grand Highlander Hybrid with seven- and eight-seat configurations, making it the clearest starting point if you need to match seating to a larger household. The regular hybrid and Hybrid MAX versions are not interchangeable for shopping: power and fuel economy differ by trim and powertrain. Confirm the exact seating layout and equipment on the vehicle you are considering.

Choose the Santa Fe Hybrid to keep the listed entry price lower
Hyundai’s U.S. model page lists a $36,400 starting MSRP for the 2026 SE. That is the lowest starting figure among the vehicles compared here, but it is not a quote for the vehicle in your area. Its FWD and AWD versions also have different manufacturer fuel-economy estimates, so compare the drivetrain you intend to buy rather than relying on the highest figure.
Consider the Sorento Hybrid as a value-focused alternative
Car and Driver lists the 2026 Sorento Hybrid at a $40,385 starting price. Before treating it as the right lower-cost choice, check the exact configuration’s seating and cargo utility against your routine. The available current-year evidence does not establish directly comparable 2026 third-row dimensions or cargo measurements across this group.
Keep the Highlander Hybrid on the list, but verify its current configuration
The Highlander Hybrid appears in Toyota’s 2026 lineup and Consumer Reports’ fuel-efficient midsize SUV group. Consumer Reports’ 2026 guide reports 35 mpg and a $47,595 price-survey result for its tested vehicle; neither should be read as a guaranteed current trim specification or dealer price. Get a current build, price, and equipment list before comparing it with the other candidates.
How to compare these SUVs for your family
Test the third row with the people who will use it
Three-row labels do not establish that every row will work for every passenger. Take the adults, children, or car seats that will regularly ride along to the dealership. Check access to the back row, headroom and legroom with the front seats set for their usual occupants, and whether child seats leave enough room for other passengers. Current comparable measurements for all four 2026 models are not available here, so a hands-on fit check is more useful than assuming a class-wide winner.
Check cargo space with the third row in use
Bring the stroller, sports gear, luggage, or other bulky items you carry regularly. Try them behind the third row, not only with seats folded. A vehicle can have three rows yet leave too little room for the load your family needs on a normal trip.
Match fuel economy to the exact trim and drivetrain
Do not compare one vehicle’s best estimate with another’s base-trim number. Hyundai’s published Santa Fe Hybrid estimate changes between FWD and AWD, and Toyota lists separate Grand Highlander figures across trims. Check the manufacturer figure for the precise drivetrain and trim on the window sticker, then compare it with the way you drive.
Compare the complete local price, not just MSRP
Starting MSRPs are useful for narrowing the list, but they do not establish the amount you will pay. Hyundai says its starting MSRP excludes freight, tax, title, and license fees, and that dealer pricing may vary. Toyota directs shoppers to local inventory and offers. Request itemized local quotes for comparable trims and account for fees and available incentives before deciding which is the better value.

The Mazda CX-90 PHEV should be considered separately from conventional hybrids. Car and Driver reports an EPA-estimated 26 miles of electric range for the 2026 model. That plug-in capability is most relevant if you can charge regularly and your typical daily trips are short enough to make use of electric driving; it adds a charging decision that does not apply in the same way to the conventional hybrids above. Its reported electric range is not comparable to a conventional hybrid’s mpg figure.

How to read the ratings and fuel-economy numbers
Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking gives the Grand Highlander Hybrid a 9.5/10, the Santa Fe Hybrid a 9/10, and the Sorento Hybrid an 8.5/10. Those are that publication’s ratings, not a universal measurement or a guarantee that one model will fit your priorities best.
Consumer Reports’ 2026 Buying Guide separately reports 34 mpg and a $40,145 price-survey result for its tested Santa Fe Hybrid. Those figures describe the tested vehicle and guide context; they are not replacements for Hyundai’s current official trim specifications or a dealer quote. Use each figure for what it represents, and verify the exact vehicle you plan to buy.
A historical comparison of 2025 Sorento Hybrid and Highlander Hybrid reported somewhat more cargo behind the Highlander’s third row and easier maneuvering in the smaller Sorento. It also described the compared Sorento Hybrid as available only with captain’s chairs. Those observations refer to 2025 models and do not establish the corresponding 2026 specifications.
