The Q5 and GLC are the strongest alternatives if you want a premium cabin with a comfort-oriented character; the X3 is the sportier reference point. If you need substantially more room and are willing to move up in size and cost, consider the BMW X5.
The CX-5 helps anchor the value end of the decision, but it is not in the same price or luxury class as these premium SUVs. Its redesigned 2026 model starts at a lower price and comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD), while the luxury models offer different power, equipment and cabin trade-offs. The right comparison is therefore not simply which SUV is best, but what the additional cost buys at the trim you would actually purchase.
How the Mazda CX-5 sets the value baseline
Mazda lists five 2026 CX-5 trims, with displayed U.S. starting prices from $29,990 to $38,990. These are manufacturer starting prices, not guaranteed transaction prices. The launch powertrain is a 187-hp, 186-lb-ft 2.5-liter four-cylinder paired with a six-speed automatic and standard i-Activ AWD. The 2026 CX-5 is a redesign, so comparisons with earlier CX-5 models may not describe the new vehicle. Mazda says the latest model is about 4.5 inches longer than its predecessor, with more rear passenger room and cargo space. Audi Q5: prioritize rear-seat comfort and included equipment
An AP story presenting Edmunds’ comparison of the 2026 Q5 and X3 describes both as redesigned for the prior model year. It lists 268 hp for the Q5’s standard engine and 255 hp for the X3 30 xDrive, with similar real-world acceleration. The comparison reports 24 mpg combined for the Q5 and 29 mpg combined for the X3 30 xDrive.
Edmunds points to more rear legroom and a reclining rear seat in the Q5, and recommends it when comfort is the priority. Adaptive cruise control is standard on the Q5 in this comparison but optional on the X3; an air suspension is available on the Q5 Prestige. These are useful distinctions for buyers who regularly carry rear passengers or value driver-assistance equipment.

Price comparisons need care because the Q5 and X3 figures include different equipment. Edmunds’ comparison gives $54,095 for the Q5 and $52,650 for the X3, including destination fees. In that comparison, the Q5 includes AWD, a panoramic sunroof, leather upholstery, adaptive cruise control and phone-key functionality. The comparison favors the X3 across combined value and performance dimensions, while finding the Q5 a close overall competitor. Mercedes-Benz GLC: lean toward a quieter, more comfort-focused feel
In AP’s 2025 report of Edmunds’ comparison, the 2026 GLC starts at $50,800 and the 2026 X3 at $52,075. Those are source- and date-specific starting prices, not direct equivalents to the destination-inclusive Q5 comparison above. AWD is standard on the X3 and optional on the GLC, so shoppers should compare the price of the drivetrain they want rather than only the base figures.

For the GLC 300 and X3 30 xDrive configurations discussed, Edmunds characterizes the GLC as quieter, more comfortable and more luxurious overall, and the X3 as sportier and more capable, with significantly more cargo capacity. BMW X3: a strong fit for performance and standard AWD
BMW lists the 2026 X3 30 xDrive with 255 hp from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and 48V mild-hybrid technology; xDrive AWD is standard. The X3 M50 xDrive is a major performance step up: BMW lists 393 hp from a 3.0-liter inline-six mild hybrid and a 0–60 mph time of 4.4 seconds. BMW says the output includes 375 hp from the combustion engine and up to 17 hp from electric drive, and notes that the acceleration figure is based on preliminary BMW AG testing.

The X5 is a different-size choice, not a direct substitute for the compact CX-5 or X3. BMW positions it as a midsize SUV with more space, luxury and performance than the X3, and offers a plug-in hybrid version. Consider it if your priorities include a larger vehicle or a plug-in hybrid option and you are comfortable moving up in size and cost. BMW’s X3 model overview also describes the X5 relative to the X3.
How to compare the real price, equipment and running costs
Published starting prices are useful for shortlisting, but they can compare unlike vehicles. The CX-5 prices above are Mazda’s displayed trim starting prices; the Q5–X3 figures include destination and a particular equipment comparison; the GLC–X3 figures are date-specific starting prices. AWD, destination, packages and local inventory can change the amount you pay and the equipment included.
- Choose the drivetrain first. AWD is standard on the 2026 CX-5 and X3 30 xDrive. In the cited GLC comparison it is optional on the GLC; the Q5 comparison includes AWD in its stated equipment and price.
- Compare like-for-like trims. Identify the engine, driver-assistance features, seating and comfort equipment you want. A lower base price may not include the features present in another vehicle’s comparison price.
- Check the current window sticker and local price. Confirm destination, options and exact trim before treating a displayed or published figure as a purchase cost.
- Use fuel-economy figures only for the configurations cited. The CX-5 estimate is Mazda’s listed figure; the Q5 and X3 combined estimates come from the AP/Edmunds comparison. Driving conditions and exact vehicle configuration affect actual mileage.
What is known about reliability and safety?
The available Consumer Reports 2025 SUV guide explains that its overall scores combine road-test results, survey reliability and owner-satisfaction findings, crash-prevention feature availability, and available NHTSA and IIHS crash-test results. Its reliability predictions draw on member-reported problems and use the model’s last three years of data when a vehicle has not been redesigned or significantly updated. For new or redesigned models, survey responses may be insufficient. That method does not establish a definitive reliability winner among these 2026 vehicles.
