In this U.S.-market shortlist, the Lexus NX 350h is the clearest no-plug choice; the Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e has the longest listed EPA electric range; and the BMW X5 xDrive50e, Volvo XC60 T8 and Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e offer different balances of output, range and size. These are model-year 2025 comparisons, not a complete list of every luxury hybrid SUV or a guide to 2026 pricing.
First, decide whether you want a hybrid or a plug-in hybrid
A conventional hybrid recovers and uses energy while driving but does not charge from an outlet, and it is not intended for sustained electric-only driving. A PHEV has a larger battery that can power the vehicle electrically within its charge and operating limits. BMW USA puts the distinction this way: “A hybrid vehicle, by contrast, cannot be charged from an external power source—they rely on energy generated from gasoline or regenerative braking.” BMW USA’s plug-in hybrid explainer also recommends regular charging to make the most of electric drive and efficiency.
That makes charging access central to the decision. If your routine trips fit a PHEV’s usable electric range and you can charge at home or elsewhere, electric driving may cover much of your regular travel. If you cannot plug in consistently, compare the vehicle’s fuel economy in hybrid operation instead of treating its electric-range figure as an efficiency verdict.

Which 2025 luxury hybrid SUV suits your priorities?
Best conventional hybrid if you do not want to plug in: Lexus NX 350h
The NX 350h is the straightforward choice for a buyer who wants hybrid operation without adding charging to the routine. Lexus listed 240 combined system horsepower and a 39 MPG combined EPA estimate for the 2025 model year. It is a conventional hybrid, so it should not be compared with PHEVs as though it offers a sustained electric commute.

Best listed electric range: Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e
Edmunds reports a 54-mile EPA electric-range figure for the 2025 GLC 350e, the longest listed here. The 20–25 MPG combined figure applies to the GLC PHEV line in Edmunds’ comparison, rather than being a separately specified rating for every configuration. Edmunds also says the high-performance AMG model has only one mile of electric range; do not transfer the 350e’s range claim to that different model.
Best compact Lexus PHEV alternative: Lexus NX 450h+
The 2025 NX 450h+ combines a manufacturer-reported 37-mile EPA-estimated electric range with 84 MPGe. Lexus also quoted a three-hour charge under ideal 240V conditions with the stated onboard charger. That is a specific charging claim under ideal conditions, not a guarantee for every home circuit or installation.

Best high-output compact-to-midsize option: Volvo XC60 T8
Edmunds lists 455 hp, 36 miles of electric range and 28 MPG combined for the 2025 XC60 T8. It pairs substantial output with an electric-range figure close to the NX 450h+, though the figures come from different sources and should not be read as a controlled head-to-head result.
Best midsize balance of electric range and tested efficiency: Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e
Edmunds lists the 2025 GLE 450e at 50 miles of electric range, 23 MPG combined and 381 hp. In Edmunds’ road test, the vehicle covered 59 miles electrically and recorded 29 MPG after the engine engaged. Those are test outcomes, not official EPA ratings, and they do not replace the comparison figures.

Best performance-oriented midsize choice: BMW X5 xDrive50e
Edmunds reports 483 hp, about 39 gas-free miles and 22 MPG combined for the 2025 X5 xDrive50e. The Associated Press reports a 38-mile EPA electric range and a 4.6-second 0–60 test. The one-mile range difference reflects distinct sources and figure types; the acceleration result is an AP test, not a manufacturer claim.
Best for luxury and presence: Range Rover PHEV
Edmunds lists the 2025 Range Rover PHEV at 542 hp, 21 miles of electric range and 21 MPG combined, and says its test matched the EPA combined rating. Its listed electric range is shorter than the other PHEVs here, so buyers weighing electric commuting should set that against the vehicle’s luxury and presence priorities.

Another Lexus PHEV: RX 450h+ Luxury AWD
The 2025 Lexus RX 450h+ Luxury AWD is confirmed as a PHEV trim, with 35 MPG combined in hybrid mode in the Lexus brochure. That excerpt does not establish the full electric-range detail, so this figure supports comparison of hybrid-mode fuel economy only.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare PHEVs beyond the electric-range number
- Match range to your routine. Think about the trips you regularly make, not just the headline figure. Actual electric range can vary with conditions and configuration; BMW identifies tires, driving style, traffic, temperature and vehicle configuration among the factors.
- Check efficiency after the battery’s usable charge is depleted. Compare hybrid-mode or combined MPG figures as labeled. A long electric range does not, by itself, tell you how efficiently a PHEV will run on longer journeys.
- Weigh output against your needs. The listed vehicles range from 240 combined system hp in the NX 350h to 542 hp in the Range Rover PHEV. Power alone does not establish acceleration, comfort or value.
- Check cabin and cargo fit in person. The shortlist includes compact-to-midsize and midsize vehicles with different utility needs. The sourced figures do not provide a consistent cabin, seating or cargo comparison, so verify the space and configuration you need on the specific trim.
- Compare prices only with the right label and date. Edmunds’ 2025 comparison listed average prices of $50,591 for the GLC, $57,223 for the XC60, $62,677 for the GLE, $82,640 for the BMW X5 and $108,921 for the Range Rover. These are time-sensitive market-average snapshots, not MSRPs or current 2026 transaction prices. The cited comparison does not establish comparable prices for the Lexus models.
Charging: what to check before choosing a PHEV
BMW’s official guidance describes a BMW Wallbox as Level 2 home equipment and a flexible charger with 120V and 240V adapters. Those are BMW charging options, not a requirement that every PHEV owner install a wallbox. Before buying or installing any equipment, confirm vehicle compatibility and your home’s electrical capacity and installation requirements. Regular charging matters most when your routine trips are short enough to use the vehicle’s electric capability; if charging will be rare, give greater weight to the vehicle’s hybrid-mode fuel economy.
Quick Recap
How to choose among the 2025 shortlist
- Rule out a plug-in if charging is not practical. Start with the Lexus NX 350h if you want a conventional hybrid and the cited 39 MPG combined EPA estimate.
- For a PHEV, compare electric range with your regular trips. The GLC 350e leads this shortlist at 54 EPA-estimated miles; the GLE 450e is listed at 50, while the NX 450h+ is listed at 37.
- Use depleted-battery fuel economy as a second filter. Compare like-labeled figures where possible, and keep test results separate from official or comparison ratings.
- Choose the vehicle class and output that suit your household. The XC60, GLE and X5 offer distinct power and vehicle-size propositions; confirm actual seating and cargo configuration on the trim you are considering.
- Verify a real transaction quote. Treat Edmunds’ market averages as dated context, then compare current dealer pricing and equipment for the exact vehicle and region.
