Truck-based models such as the Toyota Sequoia and Lexus LX 700h deliver serious towing capacity, four-wheel-drive hardware and three-row space, but they remain expensive and less efficient than car-based hybrids. Upper-midsize models such as the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid and Lexus TX use space more efficiently and can return substantially better fuel economy. 1. Toyota Sequoia: best full-size hybrid SUV for towing
The Toyota Sequoia is the clearest choice if “large” means a genuine full-size SUV with truck-based capability. Its i-FORCE MAX system is standard across the range, combining a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 with an electric motor and producing 437 hp and 583 lb-ft of torque. Properly equipped, it can tow up to 9,520 pounds.

That towing figure is the Sequoia’s strongest argument over the more efficient car-based hybrids. It also offers three rows and the ground clearance and construction expected by buyers who tow boats, haul equipment or regularly travel beyond paved roads. Fuel economy is still better than a comparable non-hybrid full-size SUV in the right configuration, with ratings reaching 22 mpg combined.
The compromise is packaging. The hybrid hardware occupies space beneath the rear cargo area, and the Sequoia is not as cargo-efficient as the Grand Highlander. Its third row is also not the reason to buy it; towing ability, ruggedness and full-size presence are. The SR5 starts at $65,725, before applicable destination and other charges.
2. Lexus LX 700h: best luxury full-size hybrid
The Lexus LX 700h takes the Sequoia’s basic hybrid logic into a far more expensive luxury and off-road package. It uses a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 hybrid system with a 10-speed automatic transmission, full-time four-wheel drive and 457 net combined horsepower. Torque output is 583 lb-ft, and maximum towing capacity is 8,000 pounds.
Full-time 4WD and the LX’s body-on-frame design make it a more serious rough-terrain vehicle than most three-row luxury SUVs. It is also the pick for buyers who want a refined cabin without giving up traditional off-road hardware. Most hybrid grades seat seven, although buyers should check the exact configuration.
It is not the sensible efficiency choice. The LX 700h is rated at 20 mpg combined, and 2026 pricing ranges from $116,785 for the Overtrail to $142,550 for the Ultra Luxury. Those Lexus figures include the $1,550 delivery, processing and handling fee. Choose it for luxury, four-wheel drive and capability—not for cargo value or low running costs.
3. Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid: best efficient family three-row
For most families, the Grand Highlander Hybrid is a more useful answer than a full-size truck-based SUV. Its regular 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid powertrain reaches up to 36 mpg combined, while the cabin provides seating for up to eight and as much as 97.5 cubic feet of cargo room with the rear seats folded.
The larger body gives the Grand Highlander a meaningful advantage over smaller three-row models. Its third row is better suited to regular family use, and there is more room to carry luggage without immediately folding a seat. It also offers a Hybrid MAX variant producing 362 hp, but that is a different priority: its fuel economy reaches only 27 mpg combined.

That distinction matters when shopping. The regular hybrid is the efficiency model. Hybrid MAX is the performance model. Do not assume that adding “MAX” improves fuel economy simply because it remains a hybrid.
4. Lexus TX 500h: best luxury conventional hybrid
The Lexus TX 500h is the upscale, more powerful alternative to the Grand Highlander Hybrid. It has a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder parallel hybrid system, standard DIRECT4 all-wheel drive and 366 total horsepower. The six-seat layout uses second-row captain’s chairs, giving passengers a more premium arrangement than an eight-passenger family configuration.
Its estimated 27 mpg combined is respectable for a powerful all-wheel-drive three-row luxury SUV, although it cannot match the regular Grand Highlander Hybrid’s 36-mpg maximum. The TX’s appeal is the balance: more performance and a richer environment than the Toyota, without the LX 700h’s body-on-frame compromises or six-figure starting price.
For 2026, the TX 500h is limited to F SPORT Performance Premium and F SPORT Performance Luxury trims. Lexus lists them at $72,010 and $75,160, respectively, including delivery, processing and handling.

The TX 550h+ should be considered separately from the TX 500h. The “+” identifies a plug-in hybrid, not simply a higher-output version of the regular hybrid. It uses a 3.5-liter V6 plug-in hybrid system, makes 404 hp and stores energy in an 18.1-kWh battery.
That battery allows short trips to be completed using electricity when the vehicle is charged. It is particularly appealing to a household with home charging, a predictable daily commute and access to charging at work. Without regular charging, much of the reason to pay for the PHEV system disappears.
The 2026 TX 550h+ Luxury AWD is listed at $81,060 including Lexus’s delivery, processing and handling fee. Availability is more limited than for the TX 500h, so confirm that a dealer has an actual 2026 550h+ rather than a generic TX listing.

6. Kia Sorento Hybrid: best value three-row hybrid
The Kia Sorento Hybrid lowers the entry price for a three-row hybrid SUV. The 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder full parallel hybrid makes 227 hp and provides seven-passenger seating. With front-wheel drive, EPA estimates reach 37 mpg city, 36 highway and 37 combined. AWD versions are rated at 32/35/34 mpg.
It can tow up to 2,000 pounds, enough for a small trailer or recreational equipment but nowhere near Sequoia territory. The third row is better viewed as an occasional-use row or a place for children than as a comfortable seat for three adults on long trips. Cargo room is also more limited than in the Grand Highlander or TX.
The EX starts at $38,890 before destination. At the other end, the X-Line SX Prestige AWD starts at $47,190. The Sorento makes sense when price and fuel economy matter more than full-size passenger space.
7. Mazda CX-90 PHEV: best plug-in hybrid for driving feel
The Mazda CX-90 PHEV is a strong choice for buyers who want standard AWD and a more engaging road feel than many family hybrids provide. Its 2.5-liter four-cylinder plug-in hybrid system produces up to 323 hp and 369 lb-ft when using premium fuel. It seats up to seven and uses an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Electric range is an EPA-estimated 26 miles. A Level 1 connection takes approximately 11 hours, while Level 2 charging takes approximately 2.5 hours. That makes overnight home charging practical with a 240-volt setup, but the short electric range means it is not an electric-only commuter for everyone.
2026 pricing starts at $50,695 before Mazda’s $1,530 destination and handling charge ($1,575 in Alaska). Mazda increased 2026 CX-90 pricing by $200 to $500 during the model year, effective May 4, 2026, so use the current listing rather than an older launch-price story.
8. Volvo XC90 T8: best premium PHEV for electric commuting
The Volvo XC90 T8 remains a compelling premium plug-in hybrid for buyers who want seven seats, a polished cabin and the ability to handle many daily trips electrically. Its turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder plug-in hybrid powertrain provides an EPA-estimated electric range of approximately 33 miles for 2026.

That range is useful for a predictable commute, but the ownership calculation depends on charging access. A buyer who cannot charge at home or work will not consistently realize the PHEV’s advantage. Exact EPA figures, equipment and U.S. pricing should be confirmed for the selected trim because Volvo’s online inventory and pricing can change.
9. Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid: best smaller three-row hybrid
Hyundai classifies the Santa Fe Hybrid as a compact SUV, but its three-row layout makes it relevant to shoppers looking beyond conventional five-seat hybrids. The 1.6-liter turbocharged hybrid produces 231 combined horsepower. FWD models are rated at 37/36/36 mpg city/highway/combined, while AWD models are rated at 35/34/34.

The Santa Fe is easier to maneuver and less expensive than the Grand Highlander, but its third row and cargo area are less suitable for consistently carrying adults and luggage. It works best for a family that needs two extra seats occasionally rather than a genuinely spacious three-row cabin every day.
Pricing starts at $36,400 for the SE and reaches $45,700 for the Limited, excluding freight and other charges.

Start with the third row
If adults will use the third row frequently, begin with the Toyota Sequoia, Grand Highlander, Lexus TX or LX. The Sorento and Santa Fe add useful seats, but their smaller dimensions make them better suited to children or occasional passengers.
Match towing capacity to the trailer
Do not shop by horsepower alone. The Sequoia’s maximum rating is 9,520 pounds, the LX 700h reaches 8,000 pounds, the Grand Highlander Hybrid is aimed at lighter-duty family hauling, and the Sorento Hybrid is rated for 2,000 pounds. Check the exact vehicle’s tow package, drivetrain and payload rating; maximum figures vary by configuration.
Choose a PHEV only if you can charge
The TX 550h+, CX-90 PHEV and XC90 T8 can cover short trips using electricity, but their advantage depends on charging. A PHEV’s electric range is not the same as its gasoline fuel-economy rating. Cold temperatures, high speeds, terrain, battery condition and driving style can reduce real-world electric range.

Do not compare prices without checking fees
Manufacturer pricing uses different fee conventions. Before comparing two listings, check whether the figure includes destination, delivery, processing and handling charges, and whether it is a current 2026 price rather than an earlier announcement.
Large SUVs often misidentified as hybrids
The Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon and Ford Expedition should not be included in a 2026 hybrid-SUV list. The 2026 Tahoe uses gasoline V8 and diesel powertrains; Chevrolet does not list a hybrid. The Yukon offers V8 and 3.0-liter Duramax diesel engines, but no hybrid Yukon is listed for 2026. Ford’s 2026 Expedition specifications identify 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engines, including a high-output version, rather than a hybrid system.
Also watch the Toyota and Lexus names. The Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX is still a hybrid, but its 27-mpg maximum is far below the regular hybrid’s 36 mpg. The TX 550h+ is a plug-in hybrid, while the TX 500h is a conventional hybrid. They are not interchangeable versions of the same powertrain.

For most families, the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is the smarter large-SUV package because it combines three-row practicality with up to 36 mpg combined. The Lexus TX 500h provides a more upscale alternative, and the TX 550h+, Mazda CX-90 PHEV and Volvo XC90 T8 make sense when regular charging is part of the ownership plan. If budget and compact dimensions come first, choose the Kia Sorento Hybrid or Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid—but expect a smaller, less adult-friendly third row.
