For a U.S. shopper replacing a Jeep Compass, the strongest compact-SUV shortlist is the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Mazda CX-5. None is a proven all-around winner for comfort, reliability, and value: the right choice depends on the model year, powertrain, trim, local price, and what matters most to you. Start with the CR-V and RAV4 if you want a direct comparison with published 2026 comfort and efficiency observations; consider the other four for their distinct price, safety-award, warranty, or fit considerations.
How to choose a Compass alternative
Do not choose by badge or base price alone. Compare the exact vehicles you could buy, with similar safety and convenience equipment, and test them on the same roads. A lower starting MSRP may not mean a lower ownership cost, and a favorable safety award or warranty claim cannot establish that a vehicle will suit your body, commute, or budget.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Use six questions to organize the decision:
- Comfort: Do the seats, ride, visibility, cabin noise, and controls work for you on your usual roads?
- Price: What is the current out-the-door quote for the trim and equipment you actually want?
- Running costs: What fuel and maintenance costs apply to the specific powertrain and your driving?
- Warranty: What does the written warranty cover, and are you eligible for the stated coverage?
- Reliability: What do comparable, current model-year and powertrain-specific sources say?
- Safety: What ratings or awards apply to the exact model year, configuration, and production range?
For a new vehicle, ask dealers for itemized quotes using the same trim and options. For a used one, judge the individual vehicle as well as the model: check its VIN for recalls, review maintenance records, arrange an inspection, and confirm any remaining warranty and its transfer terms.
Think of the six candidates as a starting shortlist rather than a ranked list. The evidence available for these models answers different questions: reviewer impressions help frame a comfort test, MSRP listings help establish a rough shopping range, and safety awards apply only to specified vehicles. None of those measures substitutes for the others. Before comparing two dealer offers, write down each vehicle’s model year, trim, powertrain, included equipment, fees, incentives, and financing terms. That makes it easier to spot when an apparently cheaper quote is for a different configuration.

If you are replacing a Compass you already own, use it as a practical benchmark. Drive it on the same route if possible, note what you want to improve—such as seat support, cabin feel, or cargo usability—and compare those priorities against each candidate. The safety evidence below includes a whiplash-prevention result for the Compass as well as the alternatives, but that is one specific test and should not be treated as an overall score.
Six alternatives worth comparing
Honda CR-V: a comfort-focused first test drive
In an Edmunds comparison carried by the Associated Press, reviewers found the 2026 CR-V’s front seats comfortable and supportive, noted that the rear doors opened wide, and judged the cabin more pleasant to spend time in than the 2026 RAV4’s. Those are reviewer impressions of the models compared, not a guarantee that every occupant will prefer the CR-V. Sit in both rows and test entry, exit, and child-seat access yourself.
The CR-V is also a useful price comparison because its hybrid equipment starts at a different point in the range from the RAV4’s standard hybrid equipment, according to that comparison. Check the actual trim and powertrain on each quote rather than comparing a gas CR-V with a hybrid RAV4 as if their equipment were equivalent.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That powertrain distinction matters when you ask what a CR-V costs to run, too. Fuel use and equipment can vary by configuration, so compare the official fuel-economy label for the exact vehicle rather than carrying a figure from one hybrid trim over to every CR-V. If you are weighing the hybrid against a gas version, include the actual purchase-price difference in your comparison rather than assuming fuel savings will automatically make one the better value.
Toyota RAV4: compare its technology and powertrain value
The same AP-carried comparison described the 2026 RAV4 cabin as spacious, with ample passenger room and a flat load floor when the rear seats are folded. It found the RAV4 stronger on updated technology and efficiency potential, while favoring the CR-V cabin for time spent inside. These observations give you a useful test-drive checklist, not a universal verdict.
For the 2026 versions in that comparison, the RAV4’s standard hybrid equipment changes what a like-for-like price comparison means. Confirm the exact RAV4 and CR-V powertrains, trim features, and current fuel-economy labels before deciding which is better value. Do not treat an estimate from a comparison article as the official rating for every configuration.
Use the RAV4’s folded-seat load floor as something to inspect in person: fold the seats, check the shape of the space, and try the objects you regularly carry. The comparison’s passenger-room observation does not answer whether your own rear passengers will be comfortable, so take them along if possible. Updated technology is only a benefit if the features you value are included on the specific trim you can afford.

Subaru Forester: include it if visibility and safety awards matter to you
The Forester is a current compact-SUV alternative and is among the vehicles listed for a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. That award is a useful reason to check the applicable IIHS entry, but it is not a comfort or reliability rating. During a test drive, check whether the seating position, sightlines, controls, and ride work for you, then compare the price of the trim with the equipment you need.

In a January 27, 2026 IIHS rear-impact whiplash-prevention evaluation, the Forester received a good rating. That is a separate, narrowly defined result from the award: the two findings should not be combined into a claim that the Forester is best overall for safety. Verify model-year applicability for both before using them in a purchase decision.
Hyundai Tucson: weigh its warranty claim against the written terms
The Tucson is another current alternative and is listed as a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Hyundai says the 2026 Tucson powertrain warranty offers five years or 40,000 miles more coverage than Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Chevrolet, Subaru, and Mazda. That is Hyundai’s own comparison claim, not a complete assessment of warranty value or proof that a particular owner qualifies.
Read the current warranty booklet for coverage, exclusions, transfer rules, commercial-use terms, and eligibility. Compare the specific Tucson powertrain and trim you are considering with the written terms for the other vehicles, and test the seat and ride rather than assuming a longer stated powertrain warranty makes the Tucson the better choice.

For a new one, compare the coverage on the paperwork with Hyundai’s public comparison claim and ask how the terms apply to your intended use. The warranty is one part of cost and risk, not a substitute for checking service records, recalls, or condition.
Kia Sportage: verify the build date for the safety award
The Sportage belongs on the shortlist as a current alternative and has a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award entry. The award applies only to qualifying vehicles built after May 2025. Check the specific vehicle’s build date and the IIHS entry before relying on the award, especially when shopping inventory that may include vehicles built earlier.
Compare trims by equipment and written warranty terms, and sit in the vehicle with the passengers or child seats you regularly carry. A model-level award or published starting price cannot tell you whether a particular trim is a good fit or a good deal.
The build-date condition is a useful reminder to check the actual stock vehicle, not just a model name in an advertisement. Ask the seller for the vehicle’s details and confirm the applicable IIHS listing. This point is especially relevant when comparing new inventory and used examples, because the year label alone does not establish that every vehicle meets the award’s production-date condition.
Mazda CX-5: test its ergonomics and ride for yourself
The CX-5 is a current compact-SUV alternative and appears on the 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ list. For a personal comparison, focus on seating position, control reach, ride comfort, passenger room, and cargo fit. Compare the exact trim’s price and standard equipment with the other vehicles under consideration; the award itself does not settle comfort, reliability, or value.

NHTSA’s 2026 selected-vehicle list includes the CX-5, but selection for testing is not a star rating. Look up the exact model and configuration in NHTSA’s results database rather than treating selection as a result or a comparative ranking.
2026 base MSRP ranges: a first screen, not a dealer quote
Consumer Reports’ 2026 new-SUV listings give these base MSRP ranges for the six alternatives. They are publisher-listed ranges, not negotiated transaction prices or complete out-the-door costs. Confirm the exact trim, destination charges, incentives, local availability, and dealer quote before comparing offers.
| Model | Consumer Reports 2026 base MSRP range | What to check before comparing |
|---|---|---|
| Kia Sportage | $28,790–$39,690 | Trim equipment and, for the IIHS award, qualifying build date |
| Hyundai Tucson | $29,700–$41,175 | Powertrain, warranty eligibility, and the specific award entry |
| Mazda CX-5 | $29,990–$38,990 | Trim equipment, passenger and cargo fit, and local quote |
| Subaru Forester | $29,995–$41,545 | Trim, cabin fit, and applicable model-year ratings |
| Honda CR-V | $30,920–$50,000 | Gas or hybrid configuration, trim, and included equipment |
| Toyota RAV4 | $31,900–$43,300 | Exact powertrain, trim, and included equipment |
The listed ranges overlap, so the order of the base prices is not a verdict on value. Get itemized local quotes for comparable vehicles, then account for financing, insurance, fuel, maintenance, warranty coverage, and expected resale in your area. No complete ownership-cost comparison for these six is established here, so avoid treating any one MSRP as proof of the cheapest option to own.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe Sportage has the lowest listed starting point in this group at $28,790, while the CR-V listing reaches the highest top end at $50,000. Those endpoints describe Consumer Reports’ published 2026 MSRP ranges; they do not show how much a dealer will charge, what equipment is included in a particular quote, or how much a specific buyer will spend over time. Use the numbers to decide which models to investigate, then compare real vehicles with equivalent equipment.
For a practical quote comparison, ask each dealer to identify the vehicle’s trim and powertrain, base price, destination charge, dealer-added items, available incentives, taxes and fees, and financing assumptions. Keep financing separate from the vehicle price when possible so that a lower monthly payment does not obscure a different total cost or loan term. If a quote includes a trade-in, compare the vehicle deal independently from the trade value.
How to make the comfort comparison meaningful
A brief loop around a dealership can hide the differences that matter on a commute. Arrange back-to-back drives in the same conditions where possible. Use a route that includes the road surfaces, speeds, turns, and parking you encounter most often, and bring regular passengers if their comfort affects the decision.
- Set the driver’s seat and mirrors. Check whether you can find a relaxed posture, reach the controls, and see what you need without strain. Repeat the setup in every vehicle.
- Drive the same road section. Pay attention to how the ride responds to rough pavement, whether road noise interferes with conversation, and whether the vehicle feels comfortable at your usual speeds.
- Check entry, exit, and rear-seat access. Have passengers use the rear doors and seats. If you use a child seat, bring it and test installation and access rather than estimating from cabin dimensions.
- Load your everyday items. Try luggage, a stroller, mobility equipment, or other cargo you routinely carry. If folded seats matter, fold them and check the resulting load floor and usable space.
- Use the controls you rely on. Try adjusting climate, audio, and driver settings while parked. Make sure the layout is comfortable and easy for the people who will drive the vehicle.
The AP-carried Edmunds comparison offers a starting hypothesis for the CR-V and RAV4: assess the CR-V’s seats and cabin feel against the RAV4’s passenger space, load floor, and technology. Your own route and passengers should decide whether those observations hold for you.

Reliability: compare evidence, not reputations
The available comparable evidence does not establish a reliability winner among these alternatives. J.D. Power’s 2026 model pages identify the CR-V, RAV4, Forester, Tucson, Sportage, and CX-5 as competitors and describe its 100-point score as drawing on hundreds of thousands of verified-owner opinions. That description alone does not provide a complete, directly comparable set of scores for all six. Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying guide includes predicted-reliability and owner-satisfaction measures, but its accessible vehicle excerpts do not supply a full apples-to-apples table for every candidate.
When checking reliability, compare vehicles from the same source and year, and make the model year and powertrain match as closely as possible. A score for one version should not be silently applied to a different year or powertrain. For used vehicles, model-level information is only a starting point: the specific car’s maintenance, recall completion, condition, warranty status, and inspection results matter to the purchase decision.
- Look for predicted-reliability and owner-satisfaction data that cover the exact model year and powertrain you are considering.
- Check open recalls by VIN and confirm completed recall work with the seller or service records.
- Review maintenance records and have a qualified mechanic inspect a used vehicle before purchase.
- Confirm remaining warranty coverage, transferability, and exclusions in the applicable written terms.
Do not treat a brand’s general reputation, one isolated ranking, or a score for a different model year as proof about the vehicle in front of you. J.D. Power’s description of its score explains the breadth and source of owner opinions, but it does not fill in a complete six-model table here. Likewise, Consumer Reports’ inclusion of predicted reliability and owner satisfaction does not justify inventing missing scores. If you cannot find a like-for-like result, describe reliability as unresolved rather than forcing a winner.
What the available safety evidence does—and does not—say
IIHS lists 2026 Top Safety Pick+ awards for the Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5, Mazda CX-50, and Subaru Forester. The Kia Sportage is listed for vehicles built after May 2025. IIHS award criteria cover specified crash tests, headlights, and crash-prevention systems; eligibility is tied to model year and, in the Sportage’s case, production date. Check the exact IIHS entry for the vehicle you are buying rather than assuming every vehicle carrying the same name qualifies.
In a January 27, 2026 IIHS report introducing a rear-impact whiplash-prevention evaluation, early small-SUV results rated the Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4 good, the Honda CR-V, Jeep Compass, and Kia Sportage acceptable, and the Hyundai Tucson and Mazda CX-50 poor. This is one seat-and-head-restraint evaluation, not an overall safety ranking. Because the tested model-year ranges are specific to the IIHS entries, verify those entries before applying a result to an individual vehicle.
NHTSA’s selected-vehicle list for 2026 includes the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. Selection for testing is not a star rating. Look up the exact model and configuration in NHTSA’s results database; do not infer a result from a vehicle’s presence on the selected list.
Keep these safety sources distinct when comparing vehicles. The IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation reflects performance across the award’s specified criteria; the rear-impact result is a single seat/head-restraint evaluation; and NHTSA’s selected list identifies vehicles chosen for testing, not their star outcomes. A result for a RAV4 Hybrid, for example, should not be assumed to apply to every RAV4 configuration without checking the database entry. For the same reason, a model-level award does not establish that a particular vehicle has no open recall or is in good condition.
A practical shortlist and quote process
- Choose your must-haves. Decide what is non-negotiable: seat comfort, rear-seat access, cargo fit, a particular powertrain, a price ceiling, or a warranty feature. Avoid choosing based on a feature you have not verified on the trim you would buy.
- Pick three vehicles for the first drive. Include the CR-V and RAV4 if their documented comfort and equipment tradeoffs interest you, then add the Forester, Tucson, Sportage, or CX-5 that best matches your priorities.
- Test in the same conditions. Use the same route, passengers, cargo, and seat-adjustment checks. Note what you experience immediately, rather than trying to reconstruct several drives from memory.
- Request comparable quotes. Ask for the same type of itemized price from each dealer, with trim, powertrain, options, fees, incentives, and financing terms identified. A base MSRP range cannot substitute for a current local quote.
- Verify the evidence for the exact vehicle. Check applicable IIHS and NHTSA entries, written warranty terms, fuel-economy labels, and—if used—VIN-specific recalls, service history, condition, and warranty status.
- Choose using your priorities. If one vehicle feels distinctly better but costs more, decide whether the comfort or equipment difference is worth the actual price gap. If the options feel close, favor the one with the best verified fit and itemized ownership costs for your circumstances.
Before you settle on a used example, ask for the VIN early enough to check recalls and investigate the vehicle’s history. A clean-looking model reputation cannot replace maintenance documentation and an inspection. For a new one, check that the safety award and any warranty statements apply to the actual model year, build date, and buyer rather than relying on a generic listing. For either type, compare fuel economy using the exact powertrain’s official label; model-level observations are not fuel-cost guarantees.

Which alternative should you test first?
Start with a CR-V and RAV4 comparison if you want to examine the clearest documented 2026 tradeoff: the AP-carried Edmunds review favored the CR-V’s cabin experience and the RAV4’s technology and efficiency potential. Add the Forester, Tucson, Sportage, or CX-5 according to your fit, price, warranty, and applicable safety-award priorities. Treat reliability as an unresolved comparison rather than assuming a brand reputation answers it. The final choice should come from a same-route test drive, a current local quote, and checks tied to the exact year, trim, powertrain, and vehicle.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best alternatives to the Jeep Compass?
The Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, and Mazda CX-5 are credible compact-SUV alternatives to compare. There is no supported universal winner across comfort, reliability, and value, so narrow the list by exact model year, powertrain, trim, local price, and personal fit.
Is a CR-V or RAV4 a better value than a Jeep Compass?
There is no single value winner established here. An AP-carried Edmunds comparison of the 2026 models favored the CR-V’s cabin experience and the RAV4’s updated technology and efficiency potential. The RAV4’s standard hybrid equipment and the point at which hybrid equipment begins in the CR-V range also affect a fair price comparison. Get local quotes for comparable trims and check official fuel-economy labels.

The comparable information does not establish a reliability winner among the CR-V, RAV4, Forester, Tucson, Sportage, and CX-5. Compare current predicted-reliability and owner-satisfaction measures from the same publisher and year, matching the powertrain where possible. For a used vehicle, also check its VIN, recall completion, maintenance records, condition, inspection, and warranty status.
Which alternatives have a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award?
IIHS lists the Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5, Mazda CX-50, and Subaru Forester for 2026. The Kia Sportage listing applies to qualifying vehicles built after May 2025. Confirm the exact model-year and production-date entry for the vehicle you are considering; an award is not a comfort or reliability rating.
Do the 2026 MSRP ranges show which SUV is cheapest to own?
No. Consumer Reports’ 2026 listings show base MSRP ranges, not negotiated prices or complete ownership costs. Compare itemized local quotes and account for equipment, financing, insurance, fuel, maintenance, warranty coverage, and expected resale in your area.
Does NHTSA selecting a vehicle for testing mean it earned a safety rating?
No. NHTSA’s 2026 selected-vehicle list includes the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, but selection is not a star result. Look up the exact model and configuration in NHTSA’s results database.

The Bottom Line
There is no evidence-backed all-around winner over the Jeep Compass for every shopper. Start with the CR-V and RAV4 to compare their documented 2026 cabin, technology, and powertrain tradeoffs, then add the Forester, Tucson, Sportage, or CX-5 based on your priorities. Test the same route, request comparable local quotes, and verify warranty, reliability, safety, fuel-economy, and vehicle-history details for the exact year and configuration before you choose.
