There is no evidence here to support one Hyundai SUV as the overall best for 2024. The clearest comparison is safety: the 2024 Ioniq 5, Kona, and Tucson built after March 2024 earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards, while the 2024 Santa Fe and Palisade earned Top Safety Pick awards. The right choice depends on what you need from an SUV; the awards alone do not settle questions such as seating, range, price, or cargo room.
How to read this 2024 Hyundai SUV ranking
Think of this as a shortlist organized by buyer priorities, not a definitive performance ranking. The available model-year-specific evidence establishes safety-award distinctions for five Hyundai SUVs, but it does not provide comparable 2024 specifications or head-to-head road tests. Without those, it would be misleading to name a universal winner or rank these vehicles by value, space, efficiency, or driving performance.
IIHS describes its awards as identifying leading safety choices within vehicle size categories during a given year. It also cautions that a smaller award-winning vehicle might not protect occupants as well as a larger vehicle that does not receive an award. The award levels therefore should not be read as a simple, all-purpose ordering of every SUV. IIHS 2024 Hyundai award roster and criteria.

Which 2024 Hyundai SUV should you consider?
For a smaller SUV on the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ list: Kona
The Kona is one of the three Hyundai models on the cited roster with the higher IIHS award level. That makes it a safety-award candidate, not a proven winner over the Tucson or Ioniq 5. The available evidence does not establish a model-year-specific comparison of their prices, passenger room, cargo capacity, fuel economy, or equipment.
For an electric-SUV shortlist: Ioniq 5
The Ioniq 5 is listed as a 2024 Top Safety Pick+. The award provides no evidence about electric range, charging speed, or suitability for a particular commute, so those questions require separate specifications for the exact model, trim, and market.

For a larger-SUV shortlist: Tucson
The Tucson earned Top Safety Pick+ status for vehicles built after March 2024. This qualification is material when comparing used or new 2024 vehicles: a Tucson built earlier than that date is not covered by this award listing. The safety evidence does not establish whether the Tucson is a better fit than the Santa Fe or Palisade for a family’s seating or cargo needs.
For a three-row or family choice: compare Santa Fe and Palisade specifications
Both the Santa Fe and Palisade appear on the IIHS roster as Top Safety Picks. The award list alone does not establish which offers the seating arrangement, child-seat access, space, or price that a particular family needs. Verify those details against the exact 2024 vehicle and market rather than treating the award category as a proxy for family practicality.

What the safety awards do—and do not—tell you
IIHS says its 2024 Top Safety Pick+ criteria include good results in the small-overlap front and updated side tests; acceptable or good results in the updated moderate-overlap front test; acceptable or good standard headlights; and acceptable or good pedestrian front crash prevention. The award is a useful sign that a vehicle met the applicable criteria, but it is not a substitute for checking the specific vehicle’s record and equipment.
NHTSA’s November 23, 2023 announcement names the Kona, Santa Fe, and Tucson among MY2024 vehicles selected for 5-Star Safety Ratings testing. It describes the test list and program; it does not report completed model-specific star ratings for those Hyundais. NHTSA said its selected MY2024 test vehicles represented approximately 86 percent of the new-vehicle fleet—a figure for the selection list, not for Hyundai SUVs alone. Hyundai Motor Group’s December 19, 2024 announcement also confirms the Hyundai SUV award distinctions, including the Tucson build-date qualification. The company reported that Hyundai Motor received four Top Safety Pick+ and five Top Safety Pick awards, and that its parent group’s 22 awards represented 21 percent of the year’s total. Those are company-reported figures, not independent comparisons proving one Hyundai SUV is safer overall than another. Hyundai Motor Group’s award announcement.
