If you want a clutch pedal and gear lever, the 2026 Honda Prelude is not the car to buy: Honda’s published U.S. specifications describe a hybrid with a direct-drive unit, while its S+ Shift feature simulates transmission-style shifts with paddle controls. The strongest alternatives are the Toyota GR86 for a rear-wheel-drive coupe, the Subaru BRZ as a closely related coupe, the Mazda MX-5 Miata for a two-seat roadster, and—if you can trade coupe styling for four-door practicality—the Honda Civic Si.
What counts as a manual transmission in this comparison?
Here, “manual” means a conventional gearbox operated by the driver with a clutch pedal and gear lever. Paddle controls or simulated shifts are not the same thing. Honda’s U.S. Prelude materials list a hybrid direct-drive unit, not a conventional manual gearbox; S+ Shift provides a simulated shifting experience. The Prelude may still appeal if you value a hybrid powertrain, comfort and efficiency, but it does not meet the literal stick-shift requirement.
There is no universal best substitute. Decide whether your priority is an engaging rear-drive coupe, an open-air two-seater, or a manual car that can better handle passengers and everyday errands.
Best manual alternatives to the Honda Prelude
Toyota GR86: the clearest coupe match
The GR86 is the most directly supported choice if you want a real manual in a two-door, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe. An Edmunds comparison republished by the Associated Press explicitly identifies its test GR86 as a manual and compares it with the Prelude. In those publication-tested examples, the GR86 reached 60 mph in 6.0 seconds and the Prelude in 7.2 seconds; those are test results, not guaranteed times for every car or conditions.

The comparison’s qualitative verdict favors the GR86 for driving character, steering feel and balance. It favors the Prelude for cabin comfort, technology, cargo volume and fuel economy. That makes the GR86 the stronger fit for engagement-first driving, while the Prelude’s case is more about everyday refinement and hybrid efficiency.
For orientation, Honda’s 2026 comparison material lists the GR86 at 228 hp, but its cited 21/30/25 mpg fuel-economy figures are for the automatic version. Consult Toyota’s current local specifications for manual-trim details and transmission-specific figures rather than applying automatic data to the manual.
Subaru BRZ: a related sports-coupe option
The BRZ is another candidate to compare if you want a compact sports coupe. Honda’s 2026 competitor comparison lists 228 hp and 184 lb-ft for the BRZ, plus 21/30/25 mpg for an automatic. Those are competitor figures published by Honda, not Subaru’s authoritative specification sheet, and the fuel-economy values do not establish manual-model economy.
Before choosing a BRZ, confirm the current manual trim and specifications on Subaru’s official page for your market. The available comparison evidence makes it a relevant rival, but does not independently establish its current manual availability.

Mazda MX-5 Miata: choose it for the roadster experience
The Miata is a better fit if you want a small, two-seat sports car and are comfortable giving up rear seats and much of the cargo space of a larger coupe. Honda’s comparison of the MX-5 Miata RF lists 181 hp and 4.48 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The fuel-economy figures on that comparison are for an automatic and should not be treated as manual figures.
Mazda Mexico’s 2026 RF specifications list a six-speed SKYACTIV-MT, establishing a manual configuration for the Mexico-market page. It does not establish equipment or availability in other countries, so check Mazda’s specification page for the country and trim you would actually buy.
Honda Civic Si: the practical sedan alternative
If you want a manual Honda but need four doors and more usable rear seating, consider the Civic Si rather than trying to make a sports coupe serve as a family sedan. A 2023 AP/Edmunds buying guide describes the Si as having a mandatory six-speed manual and more rear-seat room than the sports cars it discusses. Because that evidence is from 2023, confirm the current model-year lineup and equipment with Honda before treating the Si as a currently available manual choice in your market.

| Model | Best fit | What to weigh | Evidence and caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota GR86 | Driver-focused, rear-wheel-drive coupe with a documented manual test car | Driving character and balance versus the Prelude’s stronger showing for comfort, technology, cargo and fuel economy in the cited comparison | Edmunds/AP tested a manual GR86; current trims and manual-specific specifications should be confirmed with Toyota. |
| Subaru BRZ | Another compact sports-coupe candidate | Check current transmission, trim, price and local availability directly with Subaru. | Honda’s 2026 comparison lists 228 hp, 184 lb-ft and automatic fuel figures; the comparison is not Subaru’s authoritative specification. |
| Mazda MX-5 Miata | Two-seat roadster for buyers who prioritize a small sports car | Two seats and limited cargo capacity; RF comparison lists 4.48 cubic feet. | Mazda Mexico’s 2026 RF page lists a six-speed manual; this confirms Mexico-market evidence only. |
| Honda Civic Si | Manual Honda with sedan practicality | More rear-seat utility than the sports cars in the cited guide, but it is not a coupe. | The cited manual evidence is from a 2023 guide; verify current-year availability with Honda. |
Compare the exact car and trim you can buy locally, not just a model name. Prioritize a clutch and gear lever first, then decide how much rear-seat space, cargo room, comfort, fuel economy and price matter. Model-year equipment, manual availability, local inventory and pricing can differ by country and change over time.
