There is no single, independently established “best” Honda Accord year: reliability rankings differ by source and method. VehicleReliability.com’s sales-weighted analysis of NHTSA failure reports names the 2011 gasoline Accord strongest and the 2018 weakest among the years it scores. Consumer Reports’ indexed survey summaries highlight 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2023 as more reliable than their model-year peers. Treat these as source-specific signals—not guarantees about any individual used car.
What the reliability rankings say
The results below are not directly interchangeable. VehicleReliability.com analyzes complaint reports and compares each model year with that year’s midsize cars. Consumer Reports bases its reliability score on subscriber surveys. Their different methods produce different lists.
| Model year | Source-reported result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2011 | VehicleReliability.com calls it the strongest gasoline Accord year in its 2004–2025 coverage; it ranked 5th of 48 same-year midsize cars. | A result from that publisher’s complaint-based, sales-weighted analysis, not a universal verdict. |
| 2012 | Ranked 4th of 43 same-year midsize cars by VehicleReliability.com. | Another strong result in the same analysis; the ranking is relative to same-year competitors. |
| 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2023 | Consumer Reports’ indexed year-page summaries describe each as more reliable than other cars from its model year. | These are survey-based, same-year comparisons; the pages were not directly accessible, so the claim is limited to their indexed summaries. |
| 2022 | Consumer Reports’ indexed summary describes reliability as about average. | Not identified as a standout year by that summary. |
| 2018 | VehicleReliability.com calls it the weakest gasoline Accord year in its analysis; it ranked 39th of 43 same-year midsize cars. | A low relative result in that publisher’s method, not proof that every 2018 car is unreliable. |
| 2019 | Ranked 36th of 47 same-year midsize cars by VehicleReliability.com. | Another weak result in that analysis, rather than a concern limited to one outlier year. |
VehicleReliability.com says it weights NHTSA failure reports against U.S. sales volume and benchmarks Accords against midsize cars from the same model year. The figures are the publisher’s model-level results, not a prediction for a particular vehicle. Consumer Reports’ survey findings represent subscriber responses, while owner-reported complaints and short-term ratings capture different evidence. None alone establishes the condition of a car you are considering.
Why “best year” depends on the car and the evidence
Different methods answer different questions
Complaint counts can be misleading without context, including how many vehicles were sold. VehicleReliability.com says it accounts for U.S. sales volume and uses a same-year comparison. Consumer Reports says its reliability scores are based on subscriber survey results. J.D. Power describes its Quality & Reliability score as measuring owner-reported defects, malfunctions and design flaws. These methods should not be collapsed into one consensus ranking.

- GREAT FOR WORN or BROKEN KEY FOBS: Perfect for replacing a cracked, damaged, or worn Honda key fob case while keeping your original working internals. A simple solution to refresh your remote’s appearance and usability.
- TRANSPONDER CHIP REQUIRED TO START CAR: If your original key fob has a transponder chip, you must transfer it (some users secure it with a small amount of glue). Without the chip, the vehicle may not start.
Redesigns change the comparison
J.D. Power’s 2025 Accord page says it applies the previous model year’s rating to the redesigned vehicle and advises caution because a redesigned model is unproven. That is not a long-term reliability study, and it should not be treated as equivalent to years of survey history for an older used Accord.
Configuration matters
Edmunds, in guidance distributed by the Associated Press, recommends considering 2013–2017 Accords as used midsize cars. That generation included four-cylinder and V6 engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and an Accord Hybrid beginning with model year 2014. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto arrived with a new touchscreen infotainment system for 2016. Those differences matter when comparing equipment and versions, but the recommendation does not establish equal reliability for every configuration.

How to choose and check a used Accord
- Use rankings to make a shortlist, not a decision. If you want a complaint-data result, 2011 is VehicleReliability.com’s strongest gasoline Accord year and 2018 its weakest. If you use Consumer Reports’ indexed survey summaries, 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2023 are the years it identifies as better than same-year peers. These are distinct source-specific findings.
- Compare the exact version. Confirm the engine, transmission, hybrid status and equipment on the car you are viewing. A model-year label alone does not tell you which configuration you are evaluating.
- Review the vehicle’s history and upkeep. Check the title and history, maintenance records, mileage and accident record. Edmunds’ used-car guidance advises looking for signs of neglect or abuse.
- Get an independent pre-purchase inspection. A model-year ranking cannot substitute for inspection findings on the specific car. An OBD-II code reader may be one optional aid, but it cannot determine overall reliability or replace a professional inspection.
- Check recalls by VIN. Consumer Reports’ indexed 2024 Accord page reports three NHTSA recalls, but a model-year count does not show whether a particular car is affected or whether its recall repairs are complete. Verify the vehicle’s status using its VIN.
