Best Hard-Top Convertibles of 2025: Affordable to Exotic Roadsters

The 2025 U.S. hardtop-convertible market was small but diverse. Here are the best choices from the manual Mazda Miata RF to Corvette performance cars and Ferrari, McLaren, and Maserati exotics.

The best affordable hardtop open-air sports car in the 2025 U.S. market was the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club. If you could spend more, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible offered the strongest performance-per-dollar, while the Corvette E-Ray, Z06, and ZR1 formed an unusually broad hardtop-convertible ladder. At the exotic end, the Maserati MC20 Cielo, McLaren Artura Spider and 750S Spider, Ferrari 296 GTS, and Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider delivered increasingly expensive versions of the same basic promise: coupe-like protection when closed and open-air driving at the push of a button.

This is a 2025 U.S. model-year and calendar-year snapshot. As of August 10, 2026, these prices are historical rather than current-market quotes. Used inventory, remaining new stock, dealer markups, allocations, and equipment can change the transaction price substantially.

The 2025 hardtop-convertible market in one sentence

It was small. Under a strict definition—a roof made primarily from solid panels or hard glass that folds, retracts, or stores automatically—the market ran from the roughly $40,000 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF to exotic cars costing approximately $275,000 to more than $500,000. The Corvette was the important middle ground.

That scarcity matters because many lists labeled best hardtop convertibles mix together very different vehicles. A powered retractable roof, a targa panel, a removable Jeep roof panel, and a conventional fabric top all provide some form of open-air driving, but they do not deliver the same experience or ownership trade-offs.

What counts as a hardtop convertible?

For this guide, a hardtop convertible has a powered roof made from metal, aluminum, carbon-fiber composite, hard glass, or another solid panel. The roof either folds into the body, retracts into a storage compartment, or slides away through a powered mechanism.

Roof category What it does Examples How this guide treats it
Powered retractable hardtop Solid roof panels automatically fold or retract into the vehicle. Corvette Convertible, Ferrari 296 GTS, McLaren 750S Spider Included in the main ranking
Powered targa hard roof A powered roof section opens while structural buttresses, a roll bar, or rear glass remain. Miata RF, Porsche 911 Targa Included, but labeled separately from full convertibles
Removable hard panels The owner removes and stores roof sections manually or with separate equipment; the roof does not automatically retract. Chevrolet Corvette coupe, Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco Discussed only as an alternative
Soft top A powered or manual fabric roof folds into the body. Mustang Convertible, BMW Z4, Porsche 718 Boxster Excluded from the main hardtop ranking

A targa is the important middle category. The Miata RF retains substantial rear buttresses, and the 911 Targa retains its signature roll bar and wraparound rear glass. Both provide open-air driving, but neither exposes the cabin in exactly the same way as a full-width convertible.

Conversely, a fixed-roof Corvette coupe with removable roof panels is not a retractable-hardtop convertible. It may be a compelling open-air vehicle, but the owner must physically remove the panels rather than pressing a roof switch while driving below a specified speed.

How the rankings were chosen

The winners are editorial judgments based on a consistent set of criteria rather than an objective industry award. Roof authenticity and execution account for 20 percent; driving character for 25 percent; everyday usability for 20 percent; value for 15 percent; ownership risk for 10 percent; and exotic appeal for 10 percent.

That weighting explains why the Miata RF wins the affordable category even though it is slower and less practical than the Corvette, and why the 911 Targa wins the refined-touring category despite not being a full convertible. The best car depends on whether the roof is primarily about security, insulation, appearance, weather protection, or open-air theater.

1. Mazda MX-5 Miata RF: the best affordable hardtop driver’s car

The 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF was the answer for buyers who wanted a genuine lightweight sports car, rear-wheel drive, a manual transmission, and a solid powered roof without entering luxury-car pricing.

  • Engine: 2.0-liter four-cylinder
  • Output: 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque
  • Roof operation: Approximately 13 seconds
  • Initial RF Club MSRP: $40,850 with a six-speed manual
  • RF trunk: 4.5 cubic feet
  • Configuration: Two seats and two doors

The RF’s roof is best described as a powered retractable fastback or targa-like hardtop. It opens the section above the occupants, but the rear buttresses remain in place. That gives the car a more coupe-like silhouette and solid-roof appearance than the soft-top Miata, but it also creates larger rear-quarter blind spots and a less unobstructed open-air view.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the Miata RF wins the affordable category

It is the only genuinely low-cost, lightweight, manual-transmission retractable-hardtop sports car in this 2025 U.S. comparison. Its appeal is not straight-line speed. It is the low seating position, simple rear-drive balance, compact dimensions, and sense that the car is built around the act of driving rather than around luxury, hybrid hardware, or supercar numbers.

The RF Club initially started at $40,850. Mazda’s initial 2025 pricing also listed the RF Grand Touring at $37,550 with a manual transmission and $38,520 with the automatic. Mazda then announced a $300 price increase effective September 3, 2025, excluding the 35th Anniversary Edition. Buyers comparing an early-2025 price list with a later 2025 listing should therefore check the effective date rather than treating one figure as universally correct.

RF versus soft-top Miata

The RF is not automatically the better Miata. Its hard roof gives better resistance to casual fabric damage and a more insulated, coupe-like closed-roof experience, but the mechanism adds weight and cost. The soft-top car is the purer choice if the buyer values minimum mass, a simpler roof, lower price, and the most immediate roadster experience.

The RF’s 4.5-cubic-foot trunk and tiny cabin make it a weekend sports car, not a practical grand tourer. Pack carefully, measure luggage before buying, and sit in the car for an extended period if you are tall. The RF is a two-seat, two-door car; claims that it is available in a four-door configuration are incorrect. Rear buttresses do not create a second row or additional doors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the RF Club if: you want the least expensive hard-roof open-air sports car, insist on a manual gearbox, and accept limited storage. Choose the soft top instead if: lightness and maximum roof-down purity matter more than coupe-like styling and insulation.

2. Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible: the best performance value

The 2025 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible was the clearest bridge between an affordable sports car and an exotic roadster. Its C8 architecture places the engine behind the cabin, and its roof is a genuine fully power-retractable hardtop rather than a removable panel.

  • Engine: 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8
  • Output: Up to 495 hp with the performance exhaust configuration
  • Claimed acceleration: Up to 2.9 seconds from 0 to 60 mph with the appropriate equipment
  • Roof operation: At speeds up to 30 mph
  • Reported 2025 convertible price: Approximately $76,995 before destination

The Stingray delivers the sound and response of a large naturally aspirated V8, the traction and balance of a mid-engine sports car, and the drama of a roof that disappears at the press of a button. It also retains useful front and rear storage, making it a more credible road-trip car than most mid-engine exotics. That does not mean the convertible has identical cargo volume to the coupe in every measurement; it means Chevrolet packaged the roof unusually well.

The headline price is only a starting point. Buyers may add performance hardware, magnetic dampers, a front lift system, upgraded seats, premium technology, and appearance options. Dealer allocation and markups can also matter more than the published MSRP. The C8 Corvette uses an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic, so the Stingray Convertible is not the choice for someone who requires a manual gearbox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the Stingray Convertible if: you want the most performance per dollar and enough storage for real trips. It is the value winner because it brings supercar pace and a genuine hardtop roof without exotic-car pricing.

3. Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray Convertible: the best all-weather performance choice

The 2025 Corvette E-Ray Convertible uses the same broad retractable-hardtop concept but adds an electric motor to the front axle. The result is an all-wheel-drive Corvette with 655 hp combined and Chevrolet’s claimed 2.5-second 0–60-mph time.

  • Powertrain: V8 engine plus electric front axle
  • Output: 655 hp combined
  • Drive: All-wheel drive
  • Claimed 0–60 mph: 2.5 seconds
  • Reported 2025 convertible price: Approximately $115,595 before destination

This is the strongest choice for a buyer who wants open-air driving but expects more confidence in cold or wet conditions than a rear-wheel-drive roadster can provide. The front motor improves launch performance and low-speed response, while all-wheel drive adds traction in appropriate conditions.

It is not a snow vehicle by default. Winter tires, temperature, road clearance, road salt, and driver judgment still matter. The E-Ray’s additional electric hardware also brings more weight, complexity, and long-term ownership considerations than the naturally aspirated Stingray.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the E-Ray Convertible if: traction and year-round usability are worth its significant premium over the Stingray. Choose the Stingray if you prefer a simpler, lighter-feeling, naturally aspirated V8 experience.

4. Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Convertible: the best track-focused hardtop convertible

The Corvette Z06 Convertible is the enthusiast’s Corvette choice below the ZR1. Its naturally aspirated 5.5-liter flat-plane-crank V8 produces 670 hp and gives the car a high-revving, exotic character that the Stingray’s larger V8 does not replicate.

  • Engine: 5.5-liter naturally aspirated flat-plane-crank V8
  • Output: 670 hp
  • Roof: Power-retractable hardtop
  • Roof operating limit: Up to 30 mph
  • Mission: Street-legal track performance with open-air theater

The Z06 provides genuine track hardware while preserving the convenience of a roof that can open or close from the driver’s controls. Its engine sound and rev character are the main reasons to choose it over an E-Ray or Stingray.

The trade-off is a more demanding car. High-performance tires, brakes, and track-oriented options are expensive consumables, and the convertible adds mass compared with the coupe. A Z07-equipped Z06 can be extraordinary on a circuit but unnecessarily compromised for ordinary road use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A precise 2025 Z06 Convertible starting price should be taken from the exact Chevrolet order guide or the vehicle’s window sticker. Available published figures conflict on trim and destination treatment, so this guide does not present a single unverified number. Its price sits above the E-Ray and below the ZR1 in the 2025 Corvette hierarchy.

5. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Convertible: the best hypercar bargain

The 2025 Corvette ZR1 Convertible demonstrated how far the hardtop-convertible idea could go. Chevrolet announced a twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V8 producing 1,064 hp, with the roof mechanism integrated into the C8 convertible architecture.

  • Output: 1,064 hp
  • Claimed 0–60 mph: 2.3 seconds
  • Claimed quarter-mile: 9.6 seconds at 150 mph
  • Claimed track top speed: 233 mph with the relevant performance configuration
  • 2025 1LZ convertible price: $184,995 including the $1,695 destination freight charge
  • 2025 3LZ convertible price: $195,995 including destination
  • Production timing: Scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2025

Relative to European hypercars, the ZR1’s performance-per-dollar is astonishing. Relative to ordinary cars, it is emphatically not affordable. Carbon-fiber options, aero packages, track equipment, dealer markups, allocation limits, tires, brakes, insurance, and track consumables can move the real purchase and ownership cost far beyond the headline MSRP.

Chevrolet’s acceleration and top-speed figures are performance claims made with specific equipment and conditions. The 233-mph figure is a track claim, not a recommendation or expectation for public-road driving.

Buy the ZR1 Convertible if: you want the most extreme performance available in a mainstream-brand hardtop convertible and understand that its low base price is relative to hypercars, not to ordinary sports cars.

6. Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS: the best refined targa

The 2025 Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS belongs in this guide with an important qualification: Porsche describes the Targa as neither a conventional cabriolet nor a coupe. It is a powered targa with a distinctive roll bar and wraparound rear glass.

  • Powertrain: T-Hybrid system
  • Output: 532 hp combined
  • Claimed 0–60 mph: 3.0 seconds with Sport Chrono
  • Claimed top track speed: 194 mph
  • Roof operation: Approximately 19 seconds
  • 2025 U.S. price: $186,000 on Porsche’s stated pricing basis, before taxes, title, registration, dealer charges, and delivery fees

The Targa is the best choice here for someone who wants a car that can be used regularly, driven long distances, and enjoyed in poor weather without giving up a special open-air roof. Its all-wheel drive, refined cabin, usable 911 packaging, and enclosed rear glass make it more civilized than the Miata, Z06, or McLaren models.

It is also less open than a full convertible. The roll bar and rear glass remain part of the visual and physical experience, and the powered mechanism adds weight and cost. Porsche’s option structure can add tens of thousands of dollars, so the published price should never be confused with the price of a richly equipped example.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Porsche’s official 2025 U.S. announcement lists the Targa 4 GTS at $186,000. Some earlier coverage used a $177,550 figure and mixed other Targa trims or model-year information into the discussion. The official model-year announcement is the more appropriate reference for this article.

Buy the Targa 4 GTS if: refinement, weather protection, all-wheel drive, and touring ability matter more than having a completely unobstructed convertible opening.

7. Maserati MC20 Cielo: the best glass-roof exotic

The Maserati MC20 Cielo takes a different approach to open-air driving. Its retractable hard roof is made from PDLC glass, which can switch from transparent to opaque in approximately one second. Even with the roof closed, the cabin can feel more open than a conventional coupe.

  • Engine: 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6
  • Output: 621 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque
  • Claimed 0–60 mph: 3.0 seconds
  • Claimed top speed: 199 mph
  • Roof operation: 12 seconds, at speeds up to 30 mph
  • Price: Approximately $277,000 in 2025 reporting; verify the exact window sticker

The Cielo is the choice for design and roof theater. The transparent-to-opaque glass is more distinctive than a conventional panel, and the rear-wheel-drive twin-turbo V6 provides a relatively straightforward alternative to the more complex hybrid exotics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The price requires caution. Published databases disagree because some figures reflect coupe pricing, some include destination, and Maserati was transitioning from the MC20 toward the 2026 MCPura. Confirm the exact model year, equipment, destination charge, warranty, and dealer quotation before treating a listing as a 2025 price.

Limited cargo space, a small specialist service network, glass replacement costs, heat, and glare are more relevant ownership issues here than the roof’s impressive operating time.

8. McLaren Artura Spider: the best lightweight hybrid supercar

The 2025 McLaren Artura Spider combines a retractable hardtop with plug-in hybrid performance. Its standard roof uses carbon-fiber composite, while an electrochromic glass roof was available as an option.

  • Powertrain: Hybrid system with a twin-turbocharged V6
  • Output: 690 hp
  • Claimed 0–60 mph: 3.0 seconds
  • Claimed top speed: 205 mph
  • Roof operation: 11 seconds at speeds up to 31 mph
  • Launch price: Approximately $273,800 before destination

The Artura Spider is one of the few cars in this group to combine a retractable hardtop, plug-in hybrid capability, and a lightweight supercar engineering philosophy. The carbon-fiber roof helps limit the mass penalty usually associated with a convertible, while the optional electrochromic glass roof gives the driver more control over heat and light.

It remains an expensive, low-storage, specialist car. Buyers should evaluate ground clearance, visibility, ingress, local service support, and insurance before purchasing. The 2025 version also reflects improvements over early 2022–2023 Artura cars, so reliability or software commentary about the earliest cars should not automatically be applied to every 2025 example.

Buy the Artura Spider if: you want a technologically advanced hybrid supercar that prioritizes lightness and roof engineering more than maximum cylinder count or badge prestige.

9. McLaren 750S Spider: the best raw-performance supercar

The McLaren 750S Spider is the more intense, less hybridized McLaren choice. Its retractable hardtop opens or closes in 11 seconds at speeds up to 50 km/h, and it uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8, rear-wheel drive, and a seven-speed automated manual transmission.

  • Output: Approximately 740–750 hp, depending on rating convention
  • Roof operation: 11 seconds at up to 50 km/h
  • Drive: Rear-wheel drive
  • Transmission: Seven-speed automated manual
  • Reported 2025 pricing: Roughly $331,695 to $364,500, depending on destination and database

The Spider preserves the visual and acoustic drama of a McLaren supercar without adding a plug-in hybrid system. It is the choice for a driver who wants the most focused and visceral experience in this McLaren pair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not a low-stress daily driver. Low ground clearance, limited storage, expensive tires, specialist servicing, and a long options list all matter. The base price is a weak guide to the price of a realistically equipped car, and the broad range of published figures reflects inconsistent treatment of destination and equipment.

10. Ferrari 296 GTS: the best exotic hybrid

The Ferrari 296 GTS uses a two-section retractable hardtop that folds over the front portion of the engine compartment. Ferrari says the roof opens or closes in 14 seconds at speeds up to 45 km/h.

  • Powertrain: Plug-in hybrid system
  • Output: 830 cv
  • Claimed 0–100 km/h: 2.9 seconds
  • Claimed top speed: More than 330 km/h
  • Roof operation: 14 seconds at up to 45 km/h
  • Approximate U.S. price: $379,950

The 296 GTS offers near-hypercar acceleration while retaining much of the 296 GTB coupe’s visual identity when closed. Ferrari’s roof, rear glass, and engine-compartment design integrate the open-air experience unusually well.

Ferrari’s official output is 830 cv, or metric horsepower. That figure should not be presented as automatically identical to 830 U.S. horsepower without explaining the rating convention. Ferrari options can also push the final price far beyond the published starting figure, and the hybrid system does not make the car inexpensive to service, insure, or repair.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the 296 GTS if: you want the most complete combination of high technology, hybrid acceleration, exotic sound, and retractable-hardtop theater in Ferrari’s open-air lineup.

11. Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider: the best V12 grand tourer

The Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider is not a lightweight roadster in the Miata sense. It is a front-engine, two-seat V12 grand tourer with a retractable hardtop, long-distance intent, and a price in a different universe.

  • Engine: Naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12
  • Output: 830 cv, reported as approximately 819 hp in some U.S. coverage
  • Roof operation: 14 seconds at speeds up to 45 km/h
  • Weight difference: Ferrari lists the Spider’s dry weight at approximately 60 kg above the coupe
  • Approximate U.S. price: $510,000–$515,000

The roof stores in the rear area, so the 12Cilindri Spider remains a two-seat car. Its appeal is the classic front-engine V12 experience combined with the comfort and insulation expected of a grand tourer. It is more suited to covering long distances in style than to chasing the lightest possible sports-car feel.

Allocation, options, servicing, insurance, and availability matter more than MSRP for many buyers. Also confirm whether a particular vehicle is a 2025 model-year car or simply a car available during calendar year 2025; those descriptions are not interchangeable.

Cars that need special qualification

Ferrari SF90 Spider

The Ferrari SF90 Spider used Ferrari’s retractable-hardtop architecture and was still discussed as a Ferrari available during 2025. However, public sources disagree on exact U.S. model-year pricing and availability. MotorTrend placed the Spider around $575,445, while other sources describe the broader SF90 range differently. It is best treated as a calendar-2025 availability note unless a buyer can document the precise model year, delivery timing, and U.S. price.

Ferrari 849 Testarossa Spider

Ferrari unveiled the 849 Testarossa Spider in September 2025. That makes it a late-2025 reveal or future-model note, not automatically a 2025 model-year purchase. Delivery and U.S. model-year status should be documented before adding it to a 2025 buyer’s guide.

Pagani, Bugatti, and limited-production cars

Limited-production cars with removable hardtops or hand-installed roof panels can be mentioned in a specialist sidebar, but they should not be mixed into a mainstream ranking unless the definition of convertible is broadened to include manually installed roof systems. Prices, allocations, production dates, and U.S. availability are too specialized for a normal 2025 shopping list.

Hardtop versus soft top: what you gain and what you give up

Advantages of a hardtop

  • More coupe-like closed-roof insulation: Solid panels and glass generally create a more substantial barrier against outside noise and weather than fabric, although actual cabin-noise results vary by model and speed.
  • Greater resistance to casual fabric damage: A solid roof is less vulnerable to being cut, but glass, paint, seals, latches, and roof mechanisms remain vulnerable to forced entry and vandalism.
  • Consistent styling: Cars such as the Miata RF, Corvette, Ferrari 296 GTS, and McLaren models retain a strong coupe identity when closed.
  • Potentially better year-round comfort: A hard roof helps with rain, cold, and highway noise, but it does not make a low sports car automatically suitable for winter.

Do not turn these advantages into unsupported safety claims. A hard roof may resist slashing and can contribute to a coupe-like structure, but crash safety must be evaluated using vehicle-specific evidence rather than the roof material alone.

Disadvantages of a hardtop

  • More weight: Panels, motors, hinges, latches, bracing, wiring, seals, and storage structures add mass. The HLDI convertible-versus-coupe analysis illustrates the broader weight penalty associated with convertible construction, although the exact difference depends on the vehicle.
  • More complexity: A powered hardtop has more potential failure points than a manual fabric roof.
  • Higher repair exposure: A problem can involve motors, sensors, actuators, alignment, glass, seals, hinges, body panels, or control software rather than one piece of fabric.
  • Storage compromises: The roof has to occupy space somewhere. The Corvette is an important exception because it preserves unusually useful front and rear storage.
  • Less open-air purity for targas: The Miata RF and 911 Targa retain substantial structures around the cabin.

Hardtop does not mean fixed-roof security. It can discourage a casual knife attack on a fabric roof, but it does not prevent theft, forced entry, water leaks, or expensive damage after a collision.

Choosing the right car by budget and use case

If your priority is… Start with… Why Accept the compromise
Manual driving at the lowest realistic price Miata RF Club It is the only affordable lightweight manual retractable-roof sports car in this group. Tiny cabin and trunk; targa-like opening rather than a full convertible.
Performance per dollar Corvette Stingray Convertible Up to 495 hp, mid-engine balance, useful storage, and a genuine retractable hardtop. No manual transmission; options and dealer pricing can add substantially to MSRP.
Traction in colder or wetter conditions Corvette E-Ray Convertible 655 hp combined and all-wheel drive from an electric front axle. More weight, complexity, and cost; winter tires are still essential when conditions require them.
Naturally aspirated track character Corvette Z06 Convertible 670-hp flat-plane-crank V8 and serious track hardware. Higher consumable costs and more compromise for relaxed road use.
Maximum performance below exotic-hypercar pricing Corvette ZR1 Convertible 1,064 hp and extraordinary manufacturer-claimed acceleration. It is still expensive to buy, insure, operate, and obtain.
Daily usability and long-distance touring Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS Refinement, all-wheel drive, rear glass, and a distinctive powered roof. It is a targa, not a full convertible, and options are expensive.
Exotic roof theater Maserati MC20 Cielo PDLC glass changes from transparent to opaque and retracts in 12 seconds. Small service network, limited cargo, and glass-roof repair exposure.
Lightweight hybrid supercar technology McLaren Artura Spider Carbon-fiber retractable roof and 690-hp hybrid powertrain. Specialist ownership and expensive options.
Non-hybrid, raw supercar intensity McLaren 750S Spider Rear-wheel drive, twin-turbo V8, and a fast retractable roof. Limited practicality, low clearance, and high running costs.
Exotic hybrid sophistication Ferrari 296 GTS 830 cv, 2.9-second 0–100 km/h claim, and integrated two-section hardtop. Options, service, insurance, and allocation can overwhelm the base price.
V12 grand touring Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider Naturally aspirated V12 and full open-air driving with hardtop refinement. Approximately half-a-million-dollar pricing and limited practicality.

Hardtop operation limits in the 2025 cars

A roof that can operate while moving is convenient, but the limits are vehicle-specific. Do not assume that one model’s speed limit applies to another.

  • Corvette hardtop convertible: up to 30 mph.
  • Maserati MC20 Cielo: up to 30 mph.
  • McLaren Artura Spider: up to 31 mph.
  • Ferrari 296 GTS: up to 45 km/h.
  • Ferrari 12Cilindri Spider: up to 45 km/h.
  • McLaren 750S Spider: up to 50 km/h.
  • Miata RF: approximately 13 seconds for operation; Mazda’s cited roof description should be followed for the exact operating conditions.
  • Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS: approximately 19 seconds for the roof sequence.

The Ferrari, Maserati, McLaren, and Corvette figures are published operating limits, not interchangeable promises that every roof will open and close under every condition. Follow the owner’s manual for whether the limit applies to opening, closing, or both, and for the conditions required before activation.

Buying and inspecting a retractable-hardtop car

  1. Confirm the roof category. Determine whether the car has a powered retractable hardtop, a powered targa, a removable panel, or a soft top. Do not rely on a dealer listing that uses hardtop as a generic adjective.
  2. Operate the roof repeatedly. Test it several times with the car level and the engine or battery system in the condition specified by the owner’s manual. Listen for hesitation, grinding, rattles, or uneven movement.
  3. Inspect seals and wind noise. Look for water marks, damp carpets, staining around the windshield header and rear deck, uneven panel gaps, cracked glass, and wind noise that is inconsistent with comparable cars.
  4. Check for collision repair. Pay close attention to hinges, roof storage compartments, rear deck panels, quarter panels, and alignment. A minor-looking impact can affect a complex roof mechanism.
  5. Measure luggage space twice. Check cargo with the roof up and down. The Miata RF has only a 4.5-cubic-foot trunk; the Corvette retains useful front and rear storage; exotics generally have limited and specialized luggage capacity.
  6. Ask about roof-component warranty coverage. Confirm what the warranty covers for motors, sensors, actuators, glass, seals, latches, control modules, and water leaks. Coverage and exclusions vary by manufacturer and market.
  7. Price the consumables. Get insurance quotes and ask about replacement tires, brake components, battery service, scheduled maintenance, and specialist labor before buying a Corvette Z06, ZR1, Ferrari, Maserati, or McLaren.
  8. Verify local service capability. A nearby dealer that sells a car is not necessarily equipped or experienced to repair its retractable roof, hybrid system, or carbon-fiber structure.
  9. Separate MSRP from transaction price. Record the model year, trim, destination-charge treatment, option list, allocation status, and date of the quote. This is especially important for Ferrari, McLaren, Maserati, and limited-production Corvette variants.
  10. Use the model-specific recovery procedure. If the roof stops halfway or displays a warning, do not improvise a universal emergency procedure. The correct manual release or recovery steps differ by vehicle.

Winter use: roof protection is not the same as winter capability

A hard roof helps keep rain and cold outside, but it does not turn a sports car into an all-season vehicle. Evaluate four separate issues:

  • Roof protection: Solid panels and glass generally provide better closed-roof insulation and resistance to casual fabric damage.
  • Traction: Drive wheels, electronic aids, tire compound, and winter tires matter more than roof material.
  • Ground clearance: Low cars such as the Miata, McLaren, Ferrari, and Maserati can be difficult to use around snow, ice, steep driveways, and damaged roads.
  • Electrical health and corrosion: Powered roofs and hybrid systems depend on adequate battery voltage, while road salt can damage the underbody and mechanical components regardless of roof construction.

The E-Ray is the strongest choice in this group for cold-weather traction because it combines all-wheel drive with the Corvette’s retractable hardtop. It is not a substitute for suitable tires or sensible weather limits.

What conventional convertible lists often get wrong

They use hardtop inconsistently

Some 2025 coverage places the Jeep Wrangler alongside the Miata RF, Porsche 911 Targa, and Corvette. As Autoblog’s list illustrates, that broad approach can be useful for shoppers seeking any kind of open-air vehicle, but it is technically imprecise. A Wrangler’s removable roof panels provide open-air utility; they are not the same as an automatically retractable hardtop.

They stop before the exotic end

A list that ends with the Corvette misses the actual exotic-roadster part of the 2025 market. Ferrari, Maserati, and McLaren all offered true retractable-hardtop cars or closely related hard-roof designs, including the Ferrari 296 GTS, Maserati MC20 Cielo, and McLaren Artura Spider.

They blur model years and prices

Prices need a market, model year, trim, effective date, and destination-charge treatment. The Miata RF’s $40,850 figure was its initial RF Club MSRP before Mazda announced a $300 increase effective September 3, 2025. Porsche’s official 2025 U.S. announcement lists the Targa 4 GTS at $186,000, which conflicts with lower figures repeated in some earlier articles. Ferrari and McLaren prices are even less reliable without an exact option list and window sticker.

They fail to explain the RF and Targa compromises

The Miata RF is a targa-like retractable fastback, not an unobstructed full convertible. The Porsche Targa preserves its roll bar and rear glass and is intentionally positioned between coupe and cabriolet. Those are not defects, but they are important distinctions for a shopper who wants the cabin completely open.

Alternatives if you do not truly need a hard roof

Hardtops are not universally superior. A soft top can be lighter, simpler, less expensive, and more space-efficient. The broader 2025 convertible market was much larger than the strict retractable-hardtop market; Motor1’s 2025 convertible overview shows how many fabric-roof choices are available outside this narrower category.

  • Choose a soft-top Miata if price, low weight, a simple roof, and maximum roadster purity matter more than coupe-like insulation.
  • Choose a Ford Mustang Convertible if four usable seats, a larger trunk, V8 availability, and highway comfort matter more than exotic roof engineering.
  • Choose a BMW Z4 or Porsche 718 Boxster if you want a lightweight two-seat roadster and are comfortable with a fabric roof.
  • Choose a Porsche 911 Cabriolet if you want a true full convertible, rear-seat utility, and long-distance refinement with a soft top.
  • Choose a Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet, SL, BMW 4 Series Convertible, Lexus LC 500 Convertible, MINI Cooper Convertible, Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari Roma Spider, or similar soft-top model if luxury, comfort, or passenger space is more important than a solid retractable roof.
  • Choose a Jeep Wrangler or Ford Bronco if removable roof panels and off-road utility are the real priority.

These are alternatives, not entries in the strict hardtop-convertible ranking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Mazda MX-5 Miata RF a true hardtop convertible?

It has a powered solid retractable roof, so it qualifies under a broad hardtop-convertible definition. Functionally and visually, however, it is closer to a targa-style retractable fastback because its rear buttresses remain in place. The soft-top Miata is lighter and less expensive.

Which 2025 hardtop convertible was the cheapest in the United States?

The Mazda MX-5 Miata RF was the affordable choice. The RF Club initially started at $40,850, and Mazda announced a $300 increase effective September 3, 2025. Exact pricing depends on the effective date and trim.

Is the Chevrolet Corvette convertible’s roof a removable panel?

No. The C8 Corvette Convertible uses a fully power-retractable hardtop. The fixed-roof Corvette coupe has removable roof panels, which is a different design and is not ranked as a powered retractable-hardtop convertible.

Are hardtop convertibles better for winter?

They generally offer better closed-roof insulation and more resistance to casual fabric damage, but roof construction does not determine winter traction. Tires, all-wheel drive, ground clearance, battery health, road salt, and weather conditions still matter. The Corvette E-Ray is the strongest traction choice in this group, but it still needs appropriate tires.

Which 2025 hardtop convertible has the most cargo space?

The Chevrolet Corvette is the standout because its retractable roof is packaged while retaining useful front and rear storage. The Miata RF has a very small 4.5-cubic-foot trunk, while the mid-engine Maserati, McLaren, and Ferrari models have limited, specialized luggage capacity. Check space with the roof both up and down.

Is the Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS a convertible?

It is best described as a powered targa or hard-roof convertible alternative. Its roof section retracts, but the roll bar and wraparound rear glass remain. Porsche itself positions the Targa between a conventional coupe and a cabriolet.

The Bottom Line

The 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF Club was the right answer for affordable, lightweight, manual open-air driving. The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Convertible was the best performance value, and the Corvette E-Ray, Z06, and ZR1 let buyers choose all-weather traction, naturally aspirated track character, or 1,064-hp hypercar performance. The Porsche 911 Targa 4 GTS was the refined touring choice, while the Ferrari, Maserati, and McLaren models served buyers seeking exotic engineering and theater rather than value.

Before buying, confirm whether you want a full convertible or a targa, test the roof and seals, measure luggage space in both roof positions, verify destination and options, and price specialist maintenance. A hardtop improves the closed-roof experience, but it also adds weight, complexity, and repair exposure.
