There is no single grease that is best for every trailer bearing. Choose the grease specified by the axle or hub manufacturer, and do not top up with a different formulation unless you have confirmed it is compatible. For Dexter E-Z Lube systems, Dexter specifies lithium complex NLGI No. 2 grease; that requirement is specific to that system, not a universal trailer rule.
How to choose grease for trailer bearings
- Identify the axle and hub. Find the make, model, and lubrication-system details, then consult the applicable owner or service manual. A grease fitting alone does not establish that a hub uses Dexter E-Z Lube.
- Check the specified grease and what is already in the hub. Follow the axle maker’s instructions before adding grease. If the existing formulation is unknown, do not assume a new grease is compatible.
- Compare product specifications only after confirming the required type. Check the grease’s thickener and NLGI grade, stated application, and operating range against the axle or hub requirements.

What grease specifications mean
NLGI grade
NLGI No. 2 describes grease consistency. It does not, by itself, establish that a grease is suitable for every trailer hub. The axle or hub maker’s specification takes priority over a product’s general wheel-bearing label.
Thickener and compatibility
Greases that look similar or share an application label may use different thickener systems. Dexter warns that lithium, calcium, sodium, and barium complex greases may have compatibility problems when mixed, and directs users changing types to remove all old grease. If the grease in a pre-greased hub cannot be identified, do not treat “marine” or “wheel-bearing” on a new tub as proof it can be mixed with the factory fill. Dexter E-Z Lube System instruction

Application and temperature range
Once the required formulation is established, use the product data sheet to verify its application and other specifications. Timken’s Automotive Wheel Bearing Grease data identifies it as NLGI No. 2 lithium complex grease for disc and drum applications, with water-resistant additives and a stated operating range of -40°F to 300°F (-40°C to 149°C). Is marine grease suitable for a boat trailer?
Boat-trailer use does not make every marine grease suitable for every bearing, nor does it make two greases compatible. First identify the axle or hub specification and the grease already in it. If the manufacturer approves a marine wheel-bearing grease, use one that meets the stated requirements; if its instructions call for a different formulation, follow those instructions instead. Do not infer the factory-fill type from the hub’s appearance or from a retailer Q&A.

What Dexter says about service intervals and hand-packing
Dexter’s Light Duty 600–8K Complete Service Manual gives a lubrication interval of every 12 months or 12,000 miles for the bearings it covers. The manual’s publication or revision date was not established in the cited material, and the interval should not be applied automatically to other axles. For the hand-packing procedure described in that manual, press the bearing’s widest end into the grease and rotate it so grease works through the rollers. Repeat until the bearing is filled, then apply a light coat to the bearing cup. This is Dexter’s guidance for the bearings covered by its manual; use the correct service procedure for your axle, and ask a qualified technician if you are unsure.

How Dexter E-Z Lube works
Dexter describes E-Z Lube as a system in which grease enters through a fitting and travels through a drilled spindle to the inner bearing, then the outer bearing, and eventually back through the cap opening. Its prescribed grease is lithium complex NLGI No. 2. Do not assume that any hub with a grease fitting has this design, and follow the system’s instructions rather than treating the fitting as permission to pump in an arbitrary grease. Should you choose Timken grease?
Timken Automotive Wheel Bearing Grease is a candidate only if its specifications match your axle or hub instructions and the grease already in the hub is compatible. Timken’s product data says its grease is generally compatible with calcium, calcium 12-OH stearate, calcium sulfonate, lithium, and lithium complex thickened greases. That product-specific statement does not override an axle maker’s instructions or establish compatibility with every formulation in a particular hub. What to do if you do not know what grease is in the hub
- Look up the axle or hub instructions using its identification details; do not rely on the fitting or the word “marine” alone.
- Do not mix an unknown existing grease with a new one. Dexter directs users changing grease types to remove all old grease.
- If the hub is pre-greased and its formulation cannot be verified, ask the hub or axle manufacturer or a qualified trailer technician how to proceed.
- Use axle-specific service instructions for disassembly, inspection, grease replacement, and reassembly.
Is there an independently proven “best” trailer-bearing grease?
The cited manufacturer materials provide application and product specifications, not an independent comparative test ranking trailer-bearing greases. The defensible choice is the grease that matches the axle or hub maker’s requirements and is compatible with the grease already present—not a universal winner based on color, marketing, or a broad claim about marine use.
