For 2026, the Genesis G90 is MotorTrend’s top-ranked luxury full-size sedan, while the Toyota Crown is a more affordable, hybrid-focused large-sedan alternative. They serve different buyers, so there is no single winner across the whole class: choose first between a mainstream large sedan and a luxury flagship, then compare price, powertrain, fuel economy and the safety tests available for each model.
Here, “full-size sedan” is used broadly for large four-door cars, including both the Toyota Crown and luxury flagships. That is not a consistent industry or ranking category: MotorTrend’s 2026 list covers luxury full-size sedans specifically, and Toyota describes the Crown as blending sedan and crossover traits. The picks below reflect the cited sources, not a complete market-wide test or ranking.

How to choose between a large mainstream sedan and a luxury flagship
Choose the Toyota Crown if price and hybrid options lead
The Crown occupies a different price and powertrain position from the luxury flagships. Toyota lists four 2026 grades, with base MSRPs ranging from $41,440 for the XLE to $54,990 for the Platinum. The lineup includes a conventional hybrid system on three trims and a more powerful turbocharged hybrid system on the Platinum, with a corresponding difference in estimated fuel economy. These are Toyota’s listed base prices and estimates, not guaranteed transaction prices or real-world mileage. Toyota’s 2026 Crown specifications provide the trim-level figures.

Choose among the luxury flagships using the ranking as one input
If you are shopping specifically for a luxury full-size sedan, the cited MotorTrend order is G90, 7 Series, S-Class, A8 and LS. Treat that as one publication’s editorial judgment rather than a universal verdict: the available information does not establish directly comparable prices, equipment, fuel economy or road-test measurements for every car in the list.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) includes both the 2026 Toyota Crown and Genesis G90 in its current large-car ratings. The Crown’s table lists Good ratings for small overlap front, side, headlights and standard vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention. Its moderate overlap front test is marked “not tested.” That means there is no result shown for that test—not that the Crown performed poorly or well in it.

What to verify before you buy
- Confirm that the model year and trim you are considering are available in your area; equipment and specifications may differ by region.
- Check the dealer’s current price, incentives and inventory rather than treating base MSRP as the final purchase price.
- For the Crown, compare the regular hybrid trims with Platinum carefully: the listed powertrains and estimated city/highway mpg differ substantially.
- For safety, compare individual IIHS test results for the exact model year instead of relying on a broad class label or a single overall impression.
- For luxury sedans, use MotorTrend’s ranking as one editorial comparison and separately verify the features, pricing and driving characteristics that matter to you.
