For a new electric SUV with a starting trim under $60,000, the strongest researched choices are the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 5, Kia EV6, Cadillac Optiq and Tesla Model Y. Their published starting prices range from $36,650 to $51,790, and their EPA-estimated range bands vary by configuration. These are starting-price screens, not guarantees that a particular vehicle will cost less than $60,000 after destination, options, taxes, dealer pricing or other charges.
Which electric SUVs make the under-$60,000 shortlist?
The figures below come from Car and Driver’s 2026 ranking. Starting prices are not out-the-door prices, and each range band covers multiple configurations; do not assume the top range applies to the least expensive trim.
| 2026 model | Published starting price | EPA-estimated range band | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyundai IONIQ 5 | $36,650 | 245–318 miles | Range depends on trim, battery, drivetrain and wheels. Hyundai says selected RWD trims reach 318 miles. |
| Kia EV6 | $39,445 | 237–319 miles | Car and Driver describes it as well-rounded, spacious, fun to drive and quick to charge; these are the publication’s editorial assessments. |
| Tesla Model Y | $41,630 | 294–357 miles | The range is a configuration-dependent band, not a promise for every Model Y. |
| Cadillac Optiq | $51,790 | 278–317 miles | Car and Driver characterizes it as a small electric crossover with good looks and solid range. |

How to choose among the shortlist
Start with the actual trim price
“Under $60,000” here means a model qualifies if its starting trim is below the threshold, even if more expensive trims are not. A manufacturer’s starting MSRP is not a dealer quote or an out-the-door total. For example, Hyundai says its IONIQ 5 MSRP excludes freight, tax, title and license fees. Destination, options, dealer adjustments, taxes and any incentives can change the amount you pay; ask for a written, itemized quote for the exact vehicle.

Match range to your driving and configuration
Range changes with battery, drivetrain, trim and wheel choice. Compare the EPA estimate for the exact configuration you are considering, rather than selecting a vehicle based on the highest number in a model-wide band. For a specific illustration, the U.S. Department of Energy and EPA’s 2026 Fuel Economy Guide lists 290 miles for an IONIQ 5 AWD with 19-inch wheels and 295 miles for an EV6 Long Range AWD with 19-inch wheels. Those are configuration-specific guide values, not estimates for every trim.
Check charging for your routine
Consider whether you can charge at home, where public charging is available on your regular routes, and how much time you are willing to spend charging on longer trips. The government guide includes 240-volt charging-time figures for listed models, which can help with standardized comparisons. A 240-volt Level 2 home EV charger may suit regular home charging, but check connector compatibility and your home’s electrical service and installation requirements before buying equipment.

Fit the vehicle to people, cargo and preferences
Compare passenger and cargo space for your own use, then test the interface and features you expect to rely on. Drivetrain, cabin layout, controls and software preferences can matter more in daily use than a small difference in published range. The available ranking’s descriptions can help frame a test drive, but they are editorial judgments rather than a universal verdict.

A practical checklist before you buy
- Choose a shortlist by use: note your normal daily distance, longest regular trips, passenger and cargo needs, and preferred drivetrain.
- Identify the exact trims: compare the trim’s manufacturer MSRP and configuration-specific EPA range, not just the model name or maximum range.
- Get the real price: request a written quote that identifies destination, options, dealer adjustments, taxes and fees, and any incentive assumptions.
- Plan charging: check home electrical capacity and installation needs, compatible equipment, and public charging where you drive.
- Confirm what is available: verify model year, configuration, delivery timing and inventory with the manufacturer or local dealer before making a decision.
