The right shortlist depends first on whether the engine uses a carburetor or EFI, then on whether the manufacturer identifies the pump as compatible with the fuel you run, and finally on flow at your actual operating pressure and pump voltage. For a carbureted setup, the MagnaFuel ProStar 500 and Holley 12-150 are documented candidates; for high-pressure EFI, consider the MagnaFuel ProStar EFI or the in-tank AEM 50-1220. These are manufacturer specifications and listings, not results from a same-condition independent comparison.
Which electric fuel pumps are suitable for alcohol racing?
Fuel compatibility is specific to the pump and its intended use. A brand name alone does not establish that every pump it sells—or the complete system around a pump—can handle methanol or other alcohol fuels.

| MagnaFuel ProStar 500 (MP-4401) | MagnaFuel identifies alcohol and gasoline racing fuels; carbureted performance applications. | Manufacturer rating of 2,000+ hp at 28 psi is based on naturally aspirated gasoline engines. The product page lists 12- and 16-volt systems. |
| MagnaFuel ProStar EFI (MP-4701) | MagnaFuel identifies alcohol and gasoline racing fuels; high-volume, high-pressure EFI and forced-induction applications. | Manufacturer rating of 2,500+ hp is based on naturally aspirated gasoline engines. Race-only; maximum continuous running time is 30–45 minutes. |
| AEM 50-1220 (listed by Holley) | In-tank high-performance EFI; the listing says it was tested with methanol through M100 and ethanol through E100. | Listing reports 340 LPH at 40 PSI. The 39 mm pump kit includes a pre-filter, sleeve, end caps and wiring lead. Verify vehicle fit. |
| Holley 12-150 | Holley’s chart lists gasoline and methanol, with street/strip application. | Chart rating is 140 GPH at 7 PSI and maximum draw is 10 A. Methanol/E85 use is limited to competitive drag racing, with draining and flushing after each event. |
These figures come from different product pages and a selection chart; they do not establish a direct ranking. In particular, do not compare a flow number at 7 PSI with one at 40 PSI as if the pumps were measured under equivalent conditions.
Choose by fuel system: carburetor or EFI
Carbureted racing
The ProStar 500 is the clearly identified MagnaFuel carbureted candidate. The Holley 12-150 is another option identified for gasoline/methanol and street/strip use in Holley’s chart. Match the pump to the carburetor’s required pressure and the regulator and plumbing specified for the installation; a pump’s maximum or headline rating is not a substitute for confirming delivered flow at that pressure.
#1 Best Overall
- 400 GPH Electric Fuel Gas Alcohol Pump W/ By pass Hardwares For Street Racing
- Part# DM-2806
- High output 6-vane pump for extreme racing conditions
- Features a -10 Inlet. -10 outlet, -8 bypass valve ports provided for top performance capabilites
- This pump flows close to 400gph
High-pressure EFI
The ProStar EFI is intended for high-volume, high-pressure EFI and forced-induction applications, but its race-only status and 30–45-minute continuous-running limit matter when planning operation. The AEM 50-1220 is an in-tank EFI candidate with a stated M100 methanol compatibility claim. Its listing’s 340 LPH figure is at 40 PSI, not a promise of that flow at every pressure or voltage. Check the vehicle’s physical fit and the system’s pressure, voltage and fuel-delivery requirements.
Legacy model: Mallory 29268
Holley’s listing for the Mallory 29268 describes an alcohol/methanol pump rated at 230+ GPH at 6 PSI, but identifies it as a discontinued product and shows it unavailable. Treat it as a legacy reference, not a current recommendation.
How to size a pump for an alcohol-fueled engine
Size the complete system around the engine’s fuel demand, required pressure under operating conditions, and electrical supply at the pump. Aeromotive’s pump-selection guidance explains that flow changes as pressure and voltage change, and that its published horsepower estimates are gasoline-based. MagnaFuel likewise states that its horsepower ratings use naturally aspirated gasoline engines. Do not convert a gasoline horsepower label directly into methanol capacity.
Rank #2
- What's in the Box: Includes the M-150S 15 GPM pump w/spin collar, power cord, lockable nozzle holder, tank adapter, fuse assembly owners manual.
- Compatible with Methanol only
- Independent lab tested, the GPI M-150S received a Gold Medal Performance award for delivering three times more operating hours than our leading competitor's comparable pump
- Light-weight aluminum body provides corrosion resistance and reduces tank stress
- Extremely long life and trouble-free operation
- Establish fuel demand. Have an experienced engine builder estimate the engine’s actual requirements for its combination and intended use. Aeromotive notes that errors in estimating demand can lead to an incorrectly selected pump.
- Set the pressure requirement. Identify base fuel pressure and any change required under engine load, including for forced induction or applicable nitrous systems. Select against flow at that pressure, not free-flow alone.
- Confirm pump voltage. Use the voltage available at the pump under operating conditions. Aeromotive’s guidance treats voltage as a selection factor because flow varies with it.
- Verify delivered system flow. MagnaFuel advises checking flow at rated pressure. Its support guidance also emphasizes consistent electrical supply, sound wiring and grounding, clean filters, and preventing air from entering the pump inlet.
Installation, compatibility and maintenance checks
Plumbing and electrical supply
MagnaFuel says its pumps use an external bypass and that the system should be plumbed with a return line. Follow the selected pump maker’s regulator, return-line and plumbing recommendations; confirm line size and fittings for the actual installation. Keep filters clean, provide suitable wiring and ground, and avoid an inlet arrangement that allows air into the pump.
Whole-system fuel compatibility
A compatible pump does not make an incompatible fuel system safe to run. Holley’s fuel-system FAQ warns that alcohol can be corrosive, requires ongoing maintenance, and that the entire EFI system—including injectors—must be compatible. Confirm compatibility for every wetted component rather than assuming a pump listing covers lines, seals, regulator, filters and injectors.
After-event care and duty limits
- Holley’s selection-chart note limits methanol/E85 use for the listed pumps to competitive drag racing and calls for draining and flushing after each race event.
- MagnaFuel marks the ProStar EFI as race-only and limits continuous operation to 30–45 minutes. Plan pump run time accordingly; do not infer street suitability from its fuel compatibility.
What the published ratings can—and cannot—tell you
The manufacturer numbers help screen candidates, but they are not a common-condition comparison. MagnaFuel’s 2,000+ hp at 28 psi for the ProStar 500 and 2,500+ hp for the ProStar EFI are based on naturally aspirated gasoline engines. Holley reports the AEM pump’s 340 LPH at 40 PSI and lists the 12-150 at 140 GPH at 7 PSI. Pressure conditions differ, and the sources do not provide a fair, same-condition independent head-to-head test across these models. Use the figures as product-specific claims, then verify the complete installation at its required pressure and voltage.
