Choose by fit and the product’s labeled noise-reduction information, not by a claim that one rating makes every seat or track location safe. Protective earmuffs are another option, and some people may prefer them or use them with earplugs.
Why hearing protection matters at a race
Noise exposure can damage hearing. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) says sounds at or below 70 dBA are generally safe, while a single very loud sound or long or repeated exposure at or above 85 dBA can cause hearing loss. It specifically recommends hearing protectors for auto races. NIDCD’s hearing-protection guidance advises using earplugs or protective earmuffs when you expect to be in a loud setting.
Race-specific measurements reinforce the need for caution, but they don’t tell you the exact exposure at every drag strip. A 2010 NIOSH bulletin reported measurements from three professional stock-car circuits. Across measured race-preparation, practice, qualifying and competition activities, overall area measurements exceeded the NIOSH recommended exposure limit of 85 dBA and OSHA’s permissible exposure limit of 90 dBA. In pit areas, peak sound-pressure levels reached or exceeded 130 dB at all three tracks.
At Bristol Motor Speedway, the reported time-weighted averages ranged from 96 dBA for spectators in the stands during a race to 114 dBA for a driver inside a car during practice. The bulletin also reported measured spectator doses two to ten times the dose for a person working a 40-hour week at the maximum allowable limit of 85 dBA; those spectator measurements included some workers in the stands, such as vendors and security personnel. A driver’s measured dose exceeded the allowable occupational daily dose by 50–900 times. These are results from the study’s locations, activities and participants—not readings for every drag-racing event or spectator position. Read the NIOSH bulletin.

What to look for in earplugs
- Reliable fit: Ear canals differ, and protection depends on wearing the plug as intended. Follow the package’s fitting instructions; a plug that is uncomfortable or keeps loosening may be difficult to wear consistently.
- Labeled noise reduction: Use the product’s stated rating as one factor when comparing options, not as a guarantee that exposure will be safe at a particular track, distance or duration. The sources cited here do not establish a drag-racing-specific attenuation target.
- Comfort over the whole event: Choose a pair you can keep in place through the periods when cars are running. Ease of insertion and a secure, comfortable fit matter in practice.
- Suitability for your role: A spectator can usually prioritize a simple, portable fit. Crew members who need communication may need purpose-built communication protection rather than ordinary spectator earplugs.
There is no head-to-head test in the cited sources that identifies a best consumer brand or model for drag racing. A well-fitting pair of foam earplugs is a sensible category to consider, but the right choice depends on the wearer and the conditions.
When earmuffs or double protection may help
Protective earmuffs are an alternative if earplugs are uncomfortable or hard to fit, and they may be an additional layer for someone who needs more protection. NIOSH notes that double protection can be warranted in certain excessively noisy working environments; that is not a requirement for every spectator. If you combine plugs and muffs, make sure both fit correctly and can be worn comfortably.

Noise-cancelling earbuds should not be treated as hearing protection unless the specific product is rated and designed for that purpose. The sources here do not validate ordinary consumer noise-cancelling earbuds for drag-racing noise.
How to reduce exposure during race day
- Put protection in before the loud activity begins. Keep it in place during passes and other loud periods rather than waiting until the noise feels uncomfortable.
- Fit earplugs according to their instructions. Check that they stay secure; replace or adjust them if they work loose.
- Increase your distance from the noise source when possible. OSHA notes that distance can reduce exposure. Moving farther from the track or away from especially noisy areas can help, though it does not replace hearing protection.
- For extended time in pits or work at the track, follow the applicable safety requirements. OSHA’s occupational hearing-conservation programs apply to general-industry employees exposed at or above an 85 dBA eight-hour time-weighted average. That workplace threshold is not a consumer safety rating for earplugs or a substitute for an occupational exposure assessment. See OSHA’s noise overview.
Spectators and crew members have different needs
For a spectator, portable earplugs or protective earmuffs are straightforward options. Crew members may need to hear instructions while limiting noise exposure. NIOSH discusses custom-molded earplugs with built-in speakers and newer communication technologies, but that discussion does not verify the current availability or performance of any particular product. Workers should follow venue and employer requirements and get guidance suited to their actual exposure and communication duties.
