The best drift car is the sound, affordable rear-wheel-drive car you can maintain and practice in—not necessarily the most powerful or famous one. For a first practice car, consider a light Mazda MX-5; for a new-car purchase, compare the Toyota GR86 and Subaru BRZ; and for a used project, look at candidates such as the Nissan 350Z, Infiniti G35, BMW E36 or E46, Toyota IS300, and Nissan 240SX. Treat every model as a candidate: condition, local parts access, total budget, and closed-course seat time matter more than the badge.
What makes a good drift car?
Drifting requires the rear tires to lose traction in a controlled way. Rear-wheel drive is the clearest starting point because the driven rear wheels can break traction while the front wheels steer. Some all-wheel-drive cars can also drift if their system sends power rearward or has a rear-drive-like mode, but that is a more specialized choice. Carwow’s overview of drift cars explains the rear-wheel-drive preference and the all-wheel-drive qualification.
For a first car, prioritize predictable handling, a healthy drivetrain, manageable repair needs, and enough money left for consumables and practice. A powerful car may be exciting, but it can make mistakes more costly and leave less budget for tires or repairs. The car also needs to suit your intended use: a first practice car, a daily driver that can attend events, and a competition build have different demands.
- Condition: Rust, neglected maintenance, drivetrain wear, and poor modifications can outweigh a model’s reputation.
- Setup: Check the differential and other relevant drivetrain components; factory equipment varies by model year and market.
- Support: Local parts availability and the complexity of repairs affect how quickly and affordably you can get back on track.
- Budget: Include running costs and practice—not just the purchase price.
Which drift car fits your goal?
| Use case | Models to consider | Why they may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Learning and practice | Mazda MX-5 Miata | Its light, compact, rear-wheel-drive format makes it a learning-oriented candidate. | Older examples can have rust. Some versions may require commitment or setup to sustain slides. |
| New-car shopper | Toyota GR86 or Subaru BRZ | A current-model-year option for buyers seeking a new rear-wheel-drive sports car. The 2026 beginner guide names the GR86 as its new-car pick and the BRZ as a related alternative; that is an editorial judgment, not an instrumented test result. | Verify the exact model year and market’s transmission, differential, and other specifications before buying. |
| Used car with more power | Nissan 350Z or Infiniti G35 | Potential choices for used buyers seeking more power than a small roadster. | Inspect maintenance records, drivetrain condition, modifications, and likely repair needs; age and previous use matter. |
| Project car for a mechanically capable buyer | BMW E36 or E46 | Older chassis that are also listed as eligible examples in Formula Drift’s 2026 PROSPEC technical rulebook. | Budget for age-related maintenance and repairs. Class eligibility does not make either model an easy first car. |
| Enthusiast project | Nissan 240SX / S-chassis | A recognized enthusiast platform; S13, S14, and S15 chassis are examples in the 2026 PROSPEC rulebook. | Check closely for rust and modifications, and assess whether local parts access and the asking price make sense. |
| Daily use plus events | Toyota GR86, Subaru BRZ, or another sound rear-wheel-drive car | The right choice depends on how much comfort, practicality, and event use you need from one vehicle. | Balance event wear and repair downtime against daily transportation needs. Confirm specifications for the precise car. |
The model suggestions above reflect candidate categories, not a universal ranking. The cited 2026 beginner guide describes its selections as editorial and says they are not based on independent instrumented testing. Your local supply, the individual car’s condition, and repair costs can change which option makes sense.

How to assess a used drift-car candidate
Start with the actual vehicle rather than its reputation. A neglected example of a popular platform can be a worse purchase than a less celebrated car with a clear history and fewer repair needs.
- Review maintenance history. Look for evidence of routine servicing and repairs, and ask what work has been done to the engine, transmission, differential, suspension, and cooling system.
- Inspect for rust and damage. Give particular attention to older cars, including MX-5s and 240SXs. Have a qualified mechanic inspect structural areas if you are unsure.
- Understand the modifications. Ask what parts were changed, who installed them, and whether the car can be returned to a safe, reliable baseline. A long modification list is not proof of a good setup.
- Check drivetrain condition and configuration. Confirm the car’s drive layout and differential setup rather than assuming every trim or model year is the same.
- Reserve money for repairs. If buying the car uses the entire budget, it may not leave enough to maintain it or attend practice events.
- Confirm local parts support. Ask nearby repair shops and experienced local drivers about common parts, repair complexity, and downtime for the specific model.
Budget for driving, not only buying
A drift car uses consumables and may need repairs as you learn. Before choosing a vehicle, account for tires, brakes, fluids, alignment, cooling-system work, replacement parts, event fees, transport, safety equipment, and unexpected damage. The right total budget varies by car, location, event, and how often you drive; the available comparisons do not establish a reliable universal dollar figure.

Compare complete ownership needs rather than placing models in a simple purchase-price order. Published prices from different markets or sources may describe different currencies, dates, vehicle conditions, and sale types. Without comparable current local figures, a precise model-by-model price ranking would be misleading.
Does a competition-eligible car make a good first car?
Not necessarily. Formula Drift’s 2026 PROSPEC technical rulebook lists chassis examples including BMW E36 and E46, Nissan S13, S14, S15, 350Z, and 370Z, Toyota 86, FR-S, and BRZ, and Mustang. That establishes eligibility under a particular class’s rules; it does not show that a car is beginner-friendly, affordable to build, or suitable for road use. Check the current rules for the class and season you intend to enter.

What a professional drift build can—and cannot—tell you
Toyota’s one-off Express Service 86-X shows how far a competition build can differ from a production road car. Toyota Europe Newsroom reported in 2016 that the car, created and driven by Fredric Aasbø, had a turbocharged 3.4-liter straight-six producing 1,172 DIN hp at 5,700 rpm and 1,594 Nm at 4,100 rpm. It also had drift geometry, race suspension, a safety cage, seats, and harnesses. Those figures and parts describe that modified 86-X, not a stock Toyota GT86, GR86, or Subaru BRZ. Toyota’s account of the 86-X presents it as a purpose-built drift machine, not a road-car specification.

How to make the final choice
- Set the use case. Decide whether you want a first practice car, a dual-purpose daily, a new car, or a competition project.
- Choose a manageable shortlist. Consider a light MX-5 for learning, a GR86 or BRZ if shopping new, or a used candidate such as a 350Z, G35, E36/E46, IS300, or 240SX when condition and local support justify it.
- Compare actual cars. Inspect maintenance history, rust, modifications, drivetrain condition, and repair needs on each example.
- Price the full plan. Leave room for maintenance, tires, repairs, transport, safety equipment, event fees, and practice.
- Prioritize seat time. Choose a legal closed-course venue and learn within its rules rather than practicing on public roads.
