The strongest choices depend on whether you value original muscle-car history, a distinctive racing connection, a modern performance milestone, or maximum factory straight-line performance. This shortlist compares the standout models by those criteria and keeps Dodge and Stellantis specifications separate from independent testing.
How to judge the best Challengers
The Challenger name covers three notably different chapters: the original muscle-car run, a fuel-efficiency-focused return, and the modern rear-wheel-drive revival. A fair comparison weighs each car against its own era rather than treating every model as the same kind of performance car.
- Historical significance: Was it central to the original muscle era, connected to racing, or important to the modern revival?
- Factory performance: What output or acceleration did Dodge or Stellantis publish, and under what conditions?
- Distinctiveness: Does the model have a specific edition, configuration, or documented history?
- Intended use: A collectible, restoration project, cruiser, and drag-strip-focused car answer different needs. The available sources do not establish comparative reliability or a universal daily-driving winner.
The picks below are an editorial shortlist, not an official Dodge ranking.
Standout original Challengers: 1970–1974
Dodge introduced the first Challenger in fall 1969 as a 1970 model. The original range included coupes, convertibles, and R/T models, with engine choices that gave the name its muscle-car identity. Dodge’s 2015 brochure lists the 340 Six-Pack at up to 290 hp, the 383 Magnum at up to 335 hp, the 440 Six-Pack at up to 390 hp, and the 426 HEMI at up to 425 hp. These are brochure figures, not independent output measurements. Dodge’s Challenger history and 2015 brochure.

1970 R/T with the 426 HEMI: the classic high-performance choice
For an enthusiast seeking the most forceful factory specification in the original lineup, a 1970 R/T equipped with the 426 HEMI is a natural shortlist pick. The 425-hp figure is Dodge’s brochure claim for the engine. Body style, transmission, and the exact specification of an individual car matter; an R/T badge alone does not prove that a car has this engine.
1970 Challenger T/A: the racing-linked choice
The T/A stands out for its connection to SCCA Trans-Am rules. Dodge México describes it as a model adapted to meet those rules and also notes Challenger competition in Pro Stock. That history gives the T/A a distinct place in the lineup, but it does not mean every T/A was itself a race car. Dodge México’s Challenger history.

1970–71 R/T or 440 Six-Pack: the broad-shouldered muscle-car alternative
A 440 Six-Pack R/T is another compelling original-era choice for someone drawn to period muscle rather than the 426 HEMI’s top-line reputation. Dodge’s brochure lists the 440 Six-Pack at up to 390 hp. Compare the actual engine, transmission, body, and condition of each car rather than relying on trim names or badges alone.
The Black Ghost: a uniquely documented 1970 R/T SE
The Black Ghost is a particular car with an unusually specific history, not a generic R/T SE specification. Dodge says Godfrey Qualls took delivery on December 5, 1969, of a 1970 R/T Special Edition equipped with a 426 HEMI and four-speed manual. Dodge says 23 R/T SE cars were built with that engine-and-transmission combination for the 1970 model year, and the Black Ghost entered the National Historic Vehicle Register in 2020. The 1978–1983 Challenger: important context, different mission
The second-wave Challenger belongs in a complete account of the name, but it is not a direct alternative to a 426 HEMI or a modern supercharged model. Dodge describes the returning car as a four-cylinder fuel-efficiency response to higher fuel prices and emissions standards, and says it lacked the power of the earlier cars. Its significance is that the Challenger name adapted to a different market, not that it continued the original V8 formula.
Dodge’s 2015 brochure labels this period 1978–1983, while Dodge México’s history gives 1978–1984. The sources therefore differ on the terminal year; the 1978–1983 range follows the brochure’s stated span. Dodge’s brochure; Dodge México’s history.

Best modern Challenger performance milestones: 2008–2023
Dodge says the Challenger returned in 2008 after a decades-long hiatus, bringing retro styling, rear-wheel drive, and V8 power in the lineup. The 2015 redesign drew styling inspiration from the 1971 car. The modern candidates below represent different kinds of achievement: a supercharged turning point, a focused drag-strip special, and the final era’s high-water mark.
2015 SRT Hellcat: the modern supercharged turning point
Dodge’s 2015 brochure gives the launch SRT Hellcat 707 hp. It also quotes an NHRA-certified quarter-mile time of 10.8 seconds with street-legal drag tires, or 11.2 seconds on production tires. Those are Dodge’s published claims, and the tire qualification is material to the acceleration figure. The Hellcat is the strongest pick for someone who sees the modern revival’s headline moment in the arrival of a factory supercharged Challenger. Dodge’s 2015 Challenger brochure.

2018 SRT Demon: the specialized drag-strip pick
The 2018 Demon is best understood as a limited, purpose-focused drag-strip model rather than an all-around answer to every enthusiast’s needs. Dodge México reports 808 hp and 770 lb-ft for the Demon in its regional history. Those figures should be read as that source’s account; do not mix them with other fuel or configuration claims without a matching specification source. Dodge México’s Challenger history.
2023 SRT Demon 170: the factory-performance high-water mark
Stellantis lists the production HEMI engine in the 2023 Demon 170 at 1,025 hp and 945 lb-ft, and says the car reaches 60 mph in 1.66 seconds. Stellantis called it the quickest vehicle then produced in Dodge’s 100-plus-year history. These are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results. Stellantis North America’s 2023 Demon 170 announcement.
In that announcement, Dodge brand chief executive officer Tim Kuniskis said: “To celebrate the end of the HEMI muscle-car era, we pulled off all the governors to reach a new level, a new benchmark of ‘factory-crazy’ production car performance,” The wording is promotional, but it captures how Dodge positioned the Demon 170 as a send-off for the HEMI muscle-car era.
2023 Last Call editions: a closing chapter, not one model
Stellantis describes seven heritage-influenced special editions for 2023 under the Last Call banner. They make the final modern Challenger year a distinctive chapter, but the available announcement does not establish each edition’s production count or individual specification. Stellantis North America’s Last Call announcement.

| Modern supercharged milestone | 2015 SRT Hellcat | Dodge’s launch brochure quotes 707 hp and tire-qualified quarter-mile figures. |
| Drag-strip specialization | 2018 SRT Demon | A limited model with Dodge México-reported output figures; the source’s regional account should be retained. |
| Maximum factory performance in the final era | 2023 SRT Demon 170 | Stellantis lists 1,025 hp and quotes a 1.66-second 0–60 mph time. |
Dodge México reports 188,600 Challenger sales through 1974 in its 2020 history. That figure supplies context for the original run, but it does not rank the models or establish the rarity of any particular car.
