The best credit union for a car loan depends on more than the lowest advertised APR. Membership eligibility, credit history, vehicle age and mileage, loan term, loan-to-value limits, autopay requirements and whether you use a partner car-buying service can all change the offer you actually receive.

For a national comparison, Navy Federal Credit Union is particularly strong for eligible military families, DCU stands out for its advertised new- and used-car rates, PenFed offers useful online prequalification and car-buying-service discounts, and Alliant is a good digital-first option. Compare at least two or three written offers before accepting dealer financing.

Best credit unions for car loans at a glance

Credit union Best for Notable current feature Main limitation
Navy Federal Military-affiliated borrowers New-car APRs as low as 3.89% for 12–36 months; preapprovals valid for 90 days Membership is limited to eligible servicemembers, veterans, DoD personnel and qualifying relatives or household members
DCU Borrowers seeking the same advertised rate for new and used vehicles Rates as low as 4.99% for terms up to 65 months; up to 130% loan-to-value may be available Lowest rate depends on membership-level and payment discounts, credit and underwriting
PenFed Online prequalification and car-buying-service savings Car Buying Service rates as low as 3.39% for a 36-month new-car loan Discounted rates require a qualifying purchase through its TrueCar-powered service and assume excellent credit
Alliant Digital applications and fast approval Same-day approval in most cases, terms up to 84 months and a 0.50% car-buying-service discount No branches; rates vary with credit, vehicle, term, payment method and loan-to-value

Advertised APRs are starting rates, not guarantees. Credit unions can also change their rate tables, so verify the rate and eligibility requirements before applying.

1. Navy Federal Credit Union: best for military-affiliated borrowers

Navy Federal is a strong first stop for active-duty service members, veterans, Department of Defense personnel and their eligible family members. Its current rate table, dated July 20, 2026, lists separate pricing for new and used vehicles.

Term New vehicle APR as low as Used vehicle APR as low as
12–36 months 3.89% 4.79%
37–60 months 4.29% 5.29%
61–72 months 4.59% 5.39%
73–84 months 5.99% 6.98%
85–96 months 7.39% No listed rate

Navy Federal says it offers 100% financing, returns most decisions in seconds and has no set minimum credit score. The rate still depends on factors including credit history, amount financed, term, model year and exact mileage. Members can apply through online banking, the mobile app, by phone or at a branch.

Preapprovals remain valid for 90 calendar days. After the loan is funded, Navy Federal says the vehicle title must reach the credit union within 90 days of purchase.

Who can join Navy Federal?

Eligible groups include active-duty members of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Guard and Space Force; veterans, retirees, reservists and annuitants; certain DoD civilian employees and contractors; and qualifying relatives or household members. Establishing membership requires a Membership Savings Account with a $5 minimum balance.

Best fit: A military-affiliated buyer who wants a long preapproval window and competitive new-car pricing.

2. DCU: best for the same advertised rate on new and used cars

DCU currently advertises the same auto-loan rate table for new and used cars, trucks and vans:

  • 4.99% APR for terms up to 36, 48 or 65 months.
  • 5.49% APR for terms up to 72 months.
  • 6.99% APR for terms up to 84 months.

DCU says up to 130% loan-to-value may be available. That could help a borrower finance certain taxes, fees or other costs, but financing more than the vehicle’s value also increases the risk of starting the loan with negative equity.

Other features include purchase and refinance loans, no payments for 60 days, a 0.50% membership-level discount for qualifying Plus and Relationship Members using electronic payments, and an additional 0.25% discount for a fully electric vehicle.

DCU’s advertised rate is not automatic

The 4.99% figure is an “as low as” rate. It depends on DCU’s underwriting and may depend on qualifying for the membership and electronic-payment discounts. Your credit profile, vehicle, term, loan amount and loan-to-value can produce a different APR.

DCU membership may be available through a qualifying family relationship, employer, participating organization or eligible community. Check that requirement before submitting a full application.

Best fit: A borrower who qualifies for DCU membership and wants competitive pricing that does not automatically separate new cars from used cars.

3. PenFed Credit Union: best for online prequalification and car-buying-service discounts

PenFed lets applicants check prequalified offers without affecting their credit score. Accepting an offer requires permission for a full credit report, which creates a hard inquiry.

Its TrueCar-powered Car Buying Service currently lists these rates:

Vehicle 36 months 60 months
New 3.39% APR 3.84% APR
Used 4.34% APR 4.99% APR

These are service-specific advertised rates. They apply when the vehicle is purchased through the PenFed Car Buying Service, are subject to approval and assume excellent credit. They should not be treated as the rate every PenFed applicant will receive from every dealer.

The service is available in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. PenFed purchase loans generally require vehicles to have fewer than 125,000 miles. PenFed defines a new vehicle as an untitled vehicle that is the original owner’s vehicle, is the current model year or newer and has fewer than 7,501 miles.

PenFed may offer up to 125% financing, subject to restrictions. It does not charge an application fee or early-payoff fee. One important restriction: PenFed does not allow an internal refinance of an existing PenFed auto loan.

Prequalification is not final approval

PenFed states that its initial rate check is a soft inquiry, but accepting a loan offer triggers a full credit inquiry. It also says the final APR is determined at disbursement and depends on the final application and credit information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best fit: A buyer who wants to compare an online offer and is willing to use PenFed’s affiliated car-buying service to pursue its lowest advertised rates.

4. Alliant Credit Union: best for digital lending and fast approval

Alliant is a fully digital credit union with no branches. It says most auto-loan applications receive a same-day approval and offers online preapproval for terms up to 84 months.

Alliant finances vehicles in all 50 states, offers refinancing from other lenders and does not charge prepayment penalties. Borrowers can also receive a 0.50% APR discount when purchasing through the Alliant Car Buying Service, which is powered by TrueCar.

Alliant’s disclosures say rates are 0.40 percentage points higher without automatic payments. Refinancing an existing Alliant loan carries a rate that is 1 percentage point higher. The car-buying-service discount applies to new, untitled vehicles with terms up to 60 months, and the purchase must go through a listed TrueCar-certified dealer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Membership is available through a participating employer, an immediate family member or domestic partner of an Alliant member, or an eligible community near Alliant’s Chicago headquarters. Applicants can also qualify through the Alliant Credit Union Foundation; Alliant says it pays the one-time $5 membership fee in that situation.

Best fit: A borrower comfortable handling the entire process online who values fast decisions, nationwide lending and no prepayment penalty.

How to choose the right credit union car loan

Do not compare lenders using only the monthly payment or the lowest number in an online banner. Request offers using the same vehicle price, down payment, loan amount and term.

  1. Compare APR. APR is more useful than the nominal interest rate because it reflects the cost of borrowing and applicable lender fees.
  2. Check new-versus-used pricing. Navy Federal lists separate new- and used-car rates, while DCU currently displays the same advertised table for both.
  3. Price several terms. A 72-month loan usually has a lower payment than a 48-month loan, but it generally costs more in total interest and keeps you underwater longer if the car depreciates quickly.
  4. Confirm vehicle restrictions. Ask about model year, mileage, vehicle type and whether the advertised rate applies to the car you actually plan to buy.
  5. Calculate loan-to-value. A 125% or 130% financing limit may cover more than the sticker price, but it can increase negative-equity risk.
  6. Identify discount conditions. Autopay, electronic payments, electric-vehicle status and a specific car-buying service may all affect the final APR.
  7. Review refinance rules. For example, PenFed does not refinance its own existing auto loans, and Alliant says refinancing an existing Alliant loan carries a higher rate.
  8. Check the preapproval expiration. Navy Federal’s preapproval lasts 90 days; other lenders may set a different period.
  9. Ask how funding works. Find out whether the lender sends funds to you, the dealer or the seller, and what documents are needed.
  10. Confirm title and insurance requirements. The credit union will generally place a lien on the vehicle and may require proof of insurance.

A practical application strategy

  1. Check membership eligibility with each credit union before applying.
  2. Request prequalification or preapproval from two to four lenders.
  3. Use the same loan amount and term in each comparison.
  4. Ask whether the initial credit check is soft or hard. Do not assume that “prequalified” means no hard inquiry at every stage.
  5. Complete rate shopping within 14 to 45 days. The CFPB says multiple auto-loan inquiries during that window generally count as one inquiry for credit-scoring purposes.
  6. Take the strongest written offer to the dealer.
  7. Compare dealer financing by APR, term, amount financed, finance charge and total of payments—not just the monthly payment.
  8. Make sure financing is final before taking the car home. With “spot delivery” or “yo-yo financing,” a dealer may later request a higher rate, a larger down payment or a longer term.

Claims about credit union auto loans that are not always true

“Credit unions always have lower rates than banks.”

Not necessarily. Credit unions can be competitive, but the cheapest offer depends on credit, term, vehicle age, mileage, loan-to-value, discounts and underwriting. Compare credit unions with banks and dealer financing.

“A preapproval guarantees the final APR.”

It does not. Lenders use different meanings for prequalification and preapproval, and final terms may still depend on vehicle information, documentation, final credit review and disbursement conditions.

“Anyone can join a credit union.”

Membership rules vary. Navy Federal focuses on military, DoD and qualifying family or household relationships. DCU uses specified employer, family, organization and community routes. Alliant uses employer, family, geographic and foundation-based routes.

“A soft-pull rate check can never become a hard inquiry.”

PenFed’s process illustrates why this is wrong: the initial check is soft, but accepting an offer requires a full credit inquiry. Read the lender’s disclosure before moving from prequalification to a full application.

Protect your money and verify insurance

Before opening a share account solely to qualify for membership, verify the credit union’s insurance status. The NCUA’s National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund generally protects eligible accounts at federally insured credit unions up to $250,000 per member-owner, per insured credit union, per ownership category. Some state-chartered credit unions use private insurance instead, so check the institution’s disclosures directly.

FAQ

Which credit union has the lowest advertised car-loan rate?

The lowest advertised rate depends on the lender, term, vehicle and discount conditions. In the offers reviewed, PenFed lists rates as low as 3.39% APR for a 36-month new-car purchase through its Car Buying Service, while Navy Federal lists new-car rates as low as 3.89% for 12–36 months for eligible members.

Can I get a credit union auto loan with bad credit?

Possibly. Credit unions use their own underwriting criteria, and Navy Federal says it has no set minimum credit score. However, approval and APR depend on your complete credit profile, income, debt, vehicle, loan term, mileage and loan-to-value.

How many credit unions should I compare for a car loan?

Compare two to four lenders when possible. Use the same loan amount and term, and complete rate shopping within 14 to 45 days; the CFPB says multiple auto-loan inquiries during that period generally count as one inquiry for credit-scoring purposes.

Is credit union financing better than dealer financing?

Not automatically. A credit union preapproval gives you a benchmark and negotiating leverage, but the dealer may offer a lower final APR in some cases. Compare APR, term, finance charge, amount financed and total payments rather than choosing based only on the monthly payment.

The Bottom Line

There is no universal best credit union for a car loan. Navy Federal is the strongest starting point for eligible military-affiliated borrowers; DCU is notable for its advertised new- and used-car pricing; PenFed is useful for online prequalification and service-linked discounts; and Alliant suits borrowers who want a fully digital process.

Apply with the same vehicle and loan terms at multiple lenders, verify whether the rate check is soft or hard, and compare the final APR and total cost with the dealer’s offer. The rate on the advertisement is only a starting point until the credit union reviews your credit, vehicle and documentation.
