The best new convertible for 2026 depends on what you want from the car: the Mazda MX-5 Miata is a compact two-seat roadster, while the Ford Mustang and MINI Cooper Convertible add rear seats, and premium models such as the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG SL put more emphasis on performance or grand-touring comfort. For a practical starting shortlist, compare the Miata and RF, MINI Cooper Convertible, and Mustang before moving up to premium choices.
Which new convertibles are worth comparing for 2026?
Convertible rankings are useful for finding candidates, not for declaring one car the winner for every buyer. The cars span different seating layouts, prices, performance levels, and purposes. Edmunds says its rankings assess performance, comfort, technology, utility, and value; MotorTrend cites performance, comfort, technology, safety, and value. iSeeCars uses a different definition of value, comparing purchase price with estimated lifespan. Those criteria naturally produce different orders.
In its broad convertible list, Edmunds places the Mazda MX-5 Miata and MX-5 Miata RF first and second, followed by the MINI Cooper Convertible and Ford Mustang. That is Edmunds’ ranking, not a consensus across publishers. MotorTrend’s 2026 coverage also includes premium and performance choices such as the Porsche 911, Chevrolet Corvette Stingray/Grand Sport, BMW M4, BMW Z4, Mercedes-AMG SL, Lexus LC, and Maserati GranCabrio. These lists are not exhaustive inventories of every new convertible on sale.
| Buyer priority | Models to start with | Why they belong on the shortlist |
|---|---|---|
| Compact two-seat roadster | Mazda MX-5 Miata; MX-5 Miata RF | Edmunds ranks both at the top of its broad list. They are a different proposition from four-seat convertibles, so check whether two seats and the available cargo space suit your routine. |
| Four-seat mainstream convertible | MINI Cooper Convertible; Ford Mustang | Both appear in Edmunds’ broad list after the Miata and RF. Compare the actual rear-seat and cargo needs you have rather than assuming a convertible’s extra seats will work for every passenger. |
| Premium or performance convertible | Porsche 911; Chevrolet Corvette Stingray/Grand Sport; BMW M4; BMW Z4; Mercedes-AMG SL; Lexus LC; Maserati GranCabrio | These models appear in MotorTrend’s current ranking. They address a different budget and driving brief from a compact roadster. |
| Premium four-seat example with published U.S. figures | Mercedes-Benz CLE 300 4MATIC Cabriolet; CLE 450 4MATIC Cabriolet | The manufacturer’s 2026 U.S. guide provides pricing and specifications for both trims, making them a useful reference point for a premium convertible. |
How to choose the best convertible for the money
“For the money” can mean the lowest starting price, the strongest equipment for a given price, or the lowest estimated cost over a vehicle’s life. Those are not interchangeable measures. Compare like with like and keep the source, date, region, trim, and fee treatment attached to every price.

- Driving character: Consider whether you want an accessible roadster, a muscle or performance car, or a luxury grand tourer. These categories involve different priorities and budgets.
- Comfort and technology: Verify equipment on the model year and trim you are considering; features can vary within a model range.

- Safety: Use model-year-specific safety evidence. Broad ranking lists alone do not establish a uniform safety winner across these different cars.

Which ranking should you trust?
Use a ranking as a filter, then examine its criteria and the car’s fit for your needs. Edmunds’ ordering reflects its stated mix of performance, comfort, technology, utility, and value. MotorTrend’s ranking applies its own criteria, including safety. iSeeCars’ “for the money” result uses estimated lifespan relative to purchase price, so it answers a narrower question than a broad road-test ranking.
For U.S. shoppers, keep U.S. trims and prices separate from UK buying advice. Autotrader UK discusses the MX-5 in its own market context; its guidance should not be read as U.S. pricing or availability information.
