A home-garage lift can turn routine brake work, exhaust repairs, suspension jobs, and vehicle storage from a floor-level chore into a practical project—but only if the lift matches the garage, vehicle, concrete, and type of work. The best choice for a weekend mechanic is not automatically the lift with the highest advertised capacity.
This 2022-focused guide covers the models commonly considered at the time, while separating storage lifts, full-height service lifts, mid-rise scissors, and portable systems. Prices, warranties, availability, and certification status can change, so verify the current manufacturer documentation before ordering.
Quick picks
| Best suited to | Recommended model or type | Why it makes sense | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-height mechanical work | BendPak XPR-10AS/XPR-10A | 10,000-lb. asymmetric two-post design with approximately 69 inches of rise | Needs substantial ceiling, careful arm placement, and a suitable concrete foundation |
| Vehicle storage | BendPak HD-9 | 9,000-lb. four-post lift with 14 mechanical lock positions | Runways support the wheels, so wheel-free repairs need a jack bridge or rolling jack |
| Portable maintenance | QuickJack 7000TLX | Stores away when not in use and lifts from the vehicle frame | Raises the vehicle only about 21 to 24.5 inches, not to standing working height |
| Low-ceiling garages | Mid-rise scissor lift | Lower overall height than a full two-post or four-post lift | The center structure can restrict access to the underside |
Other models appearing on 2022 shortlists included the Triumph NSS-8, Auto Lift Car-Park-8, Triumph NT-9, APlusLift HW-10KBP, Mayflower Blacksmith four-post, Atlas PV-10P, and Dannmar Commander 7000. They may still be available through dealers, but a 2022 recommendation should not be treated as proof of current stock, pricing, warranty coverage, or certification.
Choose the lift type before choosing the model
Two-post lifts: best for serious repairs
A two-post lift leaves the wheels and most of the underside accessible. That makes it the strongest general choice for suspension, brake, wheel-bearing, exhaust, transmission, and underbody work.

#1 Best Overall
- 9000 lbs Lifting Capacity: Built with reinforced alloy steel, this portable car lift supports up to 9000 lbs (4 tons). Suitable for EVs, sedans, long-wheelbase vehicles, trucks, and SUVs, it lifts the whole vehicle and replaces repeated jack lifting
- Electric Lifting: The vehicle lift uses an electric hydraulic pump for efficient lifting. A remote control enables precise operation, and an oil sight window allows level checks. Before use, open the bleeder valve & fill with IOS46# hydraulic oil
- Adjustable Height: Our scissor car lift includes 4 non-slip rubber pads and 4 lift columns. Lifting range is 6.1–21 in (155–535 mm) with pads and 9.8–28 in (250–710 mm) with columns. It adapts to different repair heights while safely lifting vehicles
- Mechanical Security Lock: For stable support, the car scissor lift features a mechanical lock that securely locks at each height. Combined with a sealed hydraulic cylinder, it provides fast lifting and controlled lowering, ensuring security with every use
- Portable & Mobile: With a low-profile structure, this car lift can be compactly stored in garages or small repair shop corners. It includes nylon casters and handles for easy movement. Note: Use it on flat, solid ground. Slope use is not recommended
The trade-off is that the vehicle is supported at specific lifting points rather than sitting on four runways. The arms must contact the vehicle manufacturer’s approved lift points, with the correct adapters and load distribution. A vehicle below the lift’s headline capacity can still be unsafe if an arm is positioned under a body panel, fuel line, battery tray, or weak sheet-metal section.
Two-post lifts also demand more from the garage. You need adequate ceiling height, clear space for the columns and swing arms, a level floor, and concrete that meets that particular lift’s requirements.
Four-post lifts: best for storage and drive-on convenience
A four-post lift is usually easier to load because the vehicle drives onto runways. It is particularly useful when the goal is to store one car above another, keep a vehicle off the floor, or perform jobs where the wheels can remain supported.
That does not make every four-post lift automatically safer than every two-post lift. Four-post designs are generally more forgiving for drive-on storage, while two-post designs provide better wheel-free access. Correct installation, loading, mechanical locks, vehicle fit, and operating procedure matter more than the post count alone.
For wheel, brake, or suspension work, add a rolling jack or jack bridge only if it is approved for the lift and positioned according to its instructions. Never assume the runways themselves provide the same access as a two-post lift.
Mid-rise scissor lifts: a useful compromise
A mid-rise scissor lift works well in garages with limited ceiling height or for owners who need occasional tire, brake, oil, and underbody access. It can often be moved or stored more easily than a permanent two-post installation.
Rank #2
- Powerful Load Capacity for Versatile Vehicles: The vehicle lift can hold up to 7000 lbs (3200 kg), multiple locking levers for safe operation, and an upgraded spring design for faster height recovery. Car lift requires a minimum load (around 220lbs) to descend
- Max Height of 28" with Flexible Adjustments: The auto lift is equipped with 4 height increments (75*75*100 mm), 4 adjustable height increments (170-260 mm) and 2 extension panels for a maximum lifting height of 28 inches, providing ample space to easy access underneath the vehicle for maintenance and inspections
- Durable Q235B Steel Frame, Built to Last: Constructed from Q235B high-strength steel, the car lift offers solid support across various vehicle types. The frame’s anti-corrosion coating ensures reliable long-term use in both home and professional settings
- Foldable & Mobile Design for Easy Storage: Equipped with 4 wheels, scissor lift car allows you to use the lift anywhere, and the Folding design saves space when not in use
- Operating Tips: We recommend that you always use the garage lift on a flat surface, any slope over 4° is unsafe, use hydraulic oil No.46 of the specified grade
The central scissor structure is also its limitation. It can block portions of the exhaust, driveshaft, transmission, and floorpan, so inspect the lift’s contact areas against the jobs you actually perform. A low-profile vehicle may also require particular care when positioning the platforms and adapters.
Portable frame lifts: convenient, but not full-size hoists
QuickJack-style systems are useful when a permanent lift will not fit the garage or budget. The two independent frames sit beneath the vehicle, connect to a hydraulic power unit, and can be moved out of the way after use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe QuickJack 7000TLX manual lists a 7,000-lb. capacity per pair, a 3.5-inch frame-only lowered height, and lifting heights from about 21 inches with small or tall blocks to 24.5 inches with stacked blocks. Each frame weighs approximately 103 pounds. The approved blocks are part of the support system: the manual explicitly says not to raise a vehicle without them.
This is enough height for many wheel, brake, tire, oil-change, and some underbody jobs. It is not equivalent to a full-rise two-post lift, and the frames must fit within the permitted lifting-point spread—approximately 43 to 66 inches for the 7000TLX. Check vehicle-specific guidance carefully, particularly with EV battery trays, unibody structures, low cars, and unusual frame rails.

BendPak XPR-10AS/XPR-10A: best two-post choice for a suitable garage
The BendPak XPR-10AS family is a 10,000-lb. asymmetric two-post lift aimed at owners who want full-height service access. The specification sheet lists a 69-inch rise, a 79-inch maximum lifting height, a 4-inch minimum height with pad, and a 45-second full-rise time. It uses 220-volt, single-phase power, and the listed maximum load is 2,500 pounds per arm.
Its asymmetric arrangement lets the vehicle sit farther toward the rear, which can improve door-opening clearance. That does not eliminate the need to use the specified lifting points or to confirm that the arms and adapters suit the vehicle.

- Sturdy Construction: Crafted from high-grade Q235B carbon steel, our car lift is robust and stable, supporting up to 7000 lbs weight capacity. The 11" extension plate expands the contact area, making the portable car lift ideal for accommodating long-wheelbase vehicles, trucks, SUVs, and various mainstream models on flat, solid surfaces (not recommended use on slopes). Enjoy the confidence of stable support without any wobbling.
- Adjustable Lifting Height: The car lifter for garage features four adjustable lifting columns; you can effortlessly modify the columns' height by up to 3.2". And achieve a whole lifting range from 10.24" to 26.8". Additionally, the four lifting pads support 6.5" to 20" lifting range, providing ample space to easy access underneath the vehicle for maintenance and inspections.
- Enhanced Safety Features: Our car lift table is designed with your safety in mind. The mechanical safety locks secure the vehicle in place once lifted to the desired height, preventing any unwanted sliding. The lifting pads have a rubber contact surface, ensuring a strong grip and slip resistance.

The car scissor lift also includes two sets of handles, making it a breeze to hang on the wall for convenient and space-saving storage (hooks or nails not included).
- Comprehensive Accessories: Your purchase comes complete with a comprehensive set of accessories, including 4 rubber pads, 4 lifting columns, 2 hoses, 2 extension plates, 2 handles, 4 casters, 8 hex bolts (M8 x 16mm), 4 hex bolts (M10 x 55mm), 4 flat washers, 4 hex nuts (M10), and a manual. Everything you need for effortless auto lift use and setup is included.
One listed pre-existing-floor configuration calls for at least 4.25 inches of 3,000-psi concrete, aged for 28 days, with #6 rebar at 12-inch spacing. That is not a universal two-post rule or permission to install on any four-inch slab. The exact manual, floor condition, foundation design, and local requirements control.
The published overall height can reach 145 inches, but that number should not be converted directly into a universal minimum ceiling height. A tall truck, garage-door tracks, opener, lights, and the desired working height may require more clearance.
BendPak HD-9: best four-post option for storage
The HD-9 is a 9,000-lb. four-post lift with a listed maximum rise of 70 inches and a maximum lifting height of 75 inches. Its published dimensions include an overall width of 110.25 inches, an overall length of 200.5 inches including approach ramps, 158.25-inch runways, and 19-inch-wide runways. The drive-through clearance is listed as 86.5 inches, and the column height is 88 inches.
Fourteen locking positions, spaced four inches apart, allow the platform to be lowered onto mechanical locks rather than held by hydraulic pressure alone. The lift uses 220-volt, single-phase power and has a listed full-rise time of 45 seconds.

The 9,000-pound rating is tied to wheelbase and loading conditions: the published figures specify 9,000 pounds at a 115-inch wheelbase, 75% capacity at 100 inches, 50% at 85 inches, and 25% at 70 inches. Compare the vehicle’s actual weight, wheelbase, track width, axle distribution, and runway fit instead of relying on the capacity number alone.
QuickJack 7000TLX: best portable option
The 7000TLX is attractive for a garage that cannot accommodate permanent columns. Its frames can be stored against a wall, and the low entry height suits many cars that cannot drive onto a conventional runway lift.

The robust construction ensures your vehicle is held securely at any height, giving you complete peace of mind to focus on the job at hand without compromising on safety
Its limitations are just as important as its convenience. The lift does not provide standing-height access, blocks are mandatory, and the frame and blocks must align with approved vehicle lifting points. Before buying, measure the vehicle’s lifting-point spread and confirm that the manufacturer lists compatible contact locations. Do not use the frame alone as a support surface, substitute improvised blocks, or work beneath a vehicle that has not been lowered onto its proper safety system.

Product families can contain both certified and non-certified models.
Garage checks to complete before ordering
- Measure the vehicle. Record curb weight or loaded weight, wheelbase, track width, overall height, and the location of approved lift points. Include accessories such as roof racks, spare tires, toolboxes, and camper equipment.
- Measure the garage. Check ceiling height, door tracks, opener position, lighting, columns, side-wall clearance, and the space needed to open doors. Measure the approach and exit path for a four-post lift.
- Inspect the floor. Determine slab thickness, concrete strength, age, reinforcement, cracks, joints, patches, slope, and whether the lift area sits over a foundation suitable for anchoring. A contractor or structural professional may be necessary.
- Confirm power. Many full-size models use 220-volt, single-phase power. Have the circuit, disconnect, wiring, and outlet installed to local electrical requirements.
- Check certification. Search the exact current model in the Automotive Lift Institute directory. ALI certification applies to the individual model, not automatically to every lift sold by a manufacturer.
- Plan installation and service. Confirm who will assemble and anchor the lift, how it will be leveled, what inspections are required, and whether replacement cables, seals, locks, and adapters are available.
Safety issues that should decide the purchase
Do not anchor a lift into a control joint, expansion joint, deteriorated concrete, or a patched area unless the manufacturer and a qualified professional approve the installation. Thin or weak concrete, unverified soil conditions, poor leveling, and ignored seismic requirements are common failure points.
Before raising a vehicle, remove or secure loose cargo, close doors and hatches, check that adapters are seated, and verify that the load is centered. Raise the vehicle a few inches, stop, and check stability before continuing. After reaching the desired height, lower the lift onto its mechanical locks according to the manual. Hydraulic pressure alone is not a substitute for the lift’s load-holding devices.
Residential code requirements also matter. ANSI/ALI ALIS:2022, effective August 4, 2022, addresses installation, foundations, soil, placement, service, documentation, and installer qualifications. The 2024 International Residential Code added Section R317.7, which requires residential automotive lifts to be listed and labeled to ANSI/ALI ALCTV, installed according to the applicable standard and manufacturer instructions, and kept out of habitable dwelling space. Check whether your local jurisdiction has adopted these provisions and ask the authority having jurisdiction before installation.

FAQ
Is a two-post or four-post lift better for a home garage?
Choose a two-post lift for wheel-free repairs and maximum underside access. Choose a four-post lift for easier drive-on loading and vehicle storage. Neither design is automatically safer in every installation; the concrete, model certification, loading procedure, locks, and lift points determine safe use.
How thick should a garage floor be for a car lift?
There is no universal thickness requirement. The BendPak XPR-10AS specification sheet, for example, lists a particular 4.25-inch, 3,000-psi, 28-day concrete configuration with specified reinforcement for one installation condition. Follow the exact lift manual and local requirements, and have questionable slabs evaluated before drilling.
Can a 10,000-pound lift raise any vehicle under 10,000 pounds?
No. You must also check wheelbase, axle distribution, track width, lifting-point locations, adapters, and the model’s load chart. Some four-post lifts have lower allowable capacity for shorter wheelbases, even when the headline rating is much higher.
Are portable lifts such as QuickJack as good as a full-size lift?
They are useful for tires, brakes, oil changes, and some underbody work, but they do not provide the standing-height access of a two-post lift. The QuickJack 7000TLX reaches roughly 21 to 24.5 inches depending on its approved block configuration, and the blocks must be used.

For a permanent home workshop, the BendPak XPR-10AS/XPR-10A is the strongest 2022-era choice when the garage has the required ceiling, power, concrete, and installation space. For stacking or storing vehicles, the BendPak HD-9 is the more natural design, provided the vehicle’s wheelbase and axle loading fit its chart. For occasional work or a rented or low-ceiling garage, a QuickJack 7000TLX or suitable mid-rise scissor lift is more practical—but neither replaces a full-rise service lift.
Before paying for any model, confirm the exact current version in the ALI directory, read its installation manual, measure the garage and vehicle, and verify the slab with a qualified professional. Capacity printed on the sales page is only the beginning of the safety check.
