There is no single universally reliable car brand, but Lexus is the strongest answer if you mean three-year dependability in the latest U.S. data. Lexus ranked first in J.D. Power’s 2025 Vehicle Dependability Study with 140 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). For mainstream shoppers, Toyota and Mazda are among the most defensible choices, while Buick produced the study’s biggest mass-market surprise at 143 PP100.
The answer changes depending on what is being measured. Consumer Reports placed Subaru first in its broader 2025 brand report card, which combines reliability with road-test performance, safety, and owner satisfaction. Its separate predicted-reliability analysis placed Lexus, Subaru, and Toyota among the leaders. These results are not contradictory: they measure different things and should be used to create a shortlist—not to guarantee that every model from a brand will be trouble-free.

The short answer: which car brands are most dependable in 2025?
For U.S. car shoppers, these are the most useful conclusions from the major 2025 studies:

- Toyota: the strongest mainstream all-around default because it performs well across studies and offers a broad lineup and service network.
- Mazda: a particularly strong 2025 J.D. Power performer, ranking second among mass-market brands at 161 PP100.
- Subaru: Consumer Reports’ top overall brand, although its J.D. Power dependability score was slightly worse than the industry average.
- Buick: the top mass-market brand in J.D. Power’s 2025 dependability table and a brand worth investigating on a model-by-model basis.
- Honda: still a reasonable reliability candidate, but not the statistical winner in the 2025 J.D. Power results.
If you want one simple recommendation, start with a mature Lexus or Toyota model, then verify the exact model year, engine, transmission, hybrid system, recall status, and service history. A highly ranked brand cannot compensate for a neglected, damaged, or first-year vehicle.

Reliability and dependability are not exactly the same question
“Reliability” usually refers to how often a vehicle avoids failures, defects, and repairs. “Dependability” is often used more broadly to describe the ownership experience over a defined period, including problems with electronics, infotainment, driver-assistance features, interior components, and the powertrain.
The distinction matters because a vehicle can have a durable engine and transmission but still generate owner complaints because of connectivity failures, warning lights, software glitches, or malfunctioning driver-assistance equipment. Conversely, a brand can score well in a three-year dependability survey without being the least expensive vehicle to maintain over 10 or 15 years.
That is why the 2025 rankings should be read as evidence, not as a lifetime repair-cost forecast.

Consumer Reports: a broad brand report card plus predicted reliability
Consumer Reports’ 2025 brand report card covered 32 brands and ranked them using a composite framework. It combines:
- Consumer Reports road-test scores;
- safety performance;
- owner satisfaction; and
- reliability information from its annual member survey.
Subaru reclaimed the overall top position from BMW, although the margin was narrow. The underlying survey data represented approximately 300,000 vehicles from model years 2000 through 2024 and early 2025.
This is important: Subaru’s first-place Consumer Reports brand ranking is not the same thing as winning a pure repair-failure league table. It means Subaru performed best under Consumer Reports’ broader scoring system.
Consumer Reports’ separate new-car reliability analysis identified Lexus, Subaru, and Toyota among the leading brands for predicted reliability. Those verdicts are model-based. Consumer Reports also cautions that meaningful differences can exist between models from the same automaker, so a strong brand result should not replace research on the exact vehicle.

J.D. Power: observed problems in three-year-old vehicles
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study measures problems reported by original owners of 2022-model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The survey was conducted from August through November 2024 and included 34,175 owners.
The study covers 184 problem areas across nine categories:
- climate;
- driving assistance;
- driving experience;
- exterior;
- features and displays;
- infotainment;
- interior;
- powertrain; and
- seats.
J.D. Power reports the results as problems per 100 vehicles, or PP100. Lower is better. The 2025 industry average was 202 PP100, up 12 points from 2024 and the highest industry problem level since 2009, according to J.D. Power.

Technology was a major source of complaints. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity was the most frequently reported problem area in the industry, at 8.4 PP100. That finding is a reminder that modern dependability includes software and connectivity—not just engines, transmissions, and suspension parts.

The best car brands for reliability in 2025, by buyer type
1. Lexus: the best-supported dependability leader
Lexus is the strongest single answer when the question is specifically about 2025 dependability data. It ranked first overall in J.D. Power’s study at 140 PP100, marking the brand’s third consecutive year at the top. Consumer Reports also placed Lexus among its predicted-reliability leaders.
Lexus benefits from a reputation for mature powertrains and a relatively conservative approach to some vehicle systems, but the badge is not a guarantee. A new-generation model, turbocharged engine, plug-in system, or especially complex infotainment package can have a different risk profile from an established model.
Best for: buyers who want the strongest statistical dependability case and are prepared for premium-brand purchase prices, servicing, insurance, and replacement-part costs.
2. Toyota: the strongest mainstream default
Toyota ranked fourth overall in J.D. Power’s table and third among mass-market brands at 162 PP100. It also appeared among Consumer Reports’ new-car predicted-reliability leaders.
Toyota is an especially defensible mainstream choice because it offers a wide range of cars, crossovers, trucks, hybrids, and minivans, along with broad dealer and independent-service coverage. Its resale strength can also help ownership economics, although resale value varies by model, condition, location, and market timing.
Toyota should not be described as flawless. The company has introduced more hybrids, driver-assistance features, connectivity systems, and redesigned platforms. Those changes can create substantial differences between model years. Choose the established version of the exact vehicle whenever the evidence favors it, and verify the specific powertrain rather than relying only on the Toyota name.
Best for: shoppers who want a mainstream vehicle with broad availability, strong market familiarity, and a deep service network.
3. Mazda: an unusually strong 2025 mainstream result
Mazda ranked third overall and second among mass-market brands in J.D. Power’s 2025 study, with 161 PP100—just one problem per 100 vehicles better than Toyota’s score of 162.

The duster brush helps to clean the interior of the car in a seconds. The interior detailing brush with soft bristle works great in removing dust from air vents, dashboard or center console without scratching the surface. 3 wire brushes made of stainless steel, brass and nylon can effectively clean stubborn stains
- Multi-purpose Wash Cleaning kit: All the car detailing supplies are packed in a nice portable storage bag that is perfect for both vehicle washing and house cleaning. It is great for cleaning interior and exterior of different kind of vehicles, like motorcycle, truck, SUV, RV, boat. And also can makes your house, kitchen, bathtub, sink clean and tidy
That result makes Mazda one of the most compelling alternatives to Toyota and Honda for buyers who want a mainstream vehicle with a more engaging driving character. Mazda has also generally appealed to shoppers who prefer a relatively restrained technology profile, though newer models and redesigned systems still require model-specific scrutiny.
The score does not mean every Mazda engine, transmission, trim, or model year is equally dependable. Check the exact generation, especially when comparing a newly redesigned vehicle with an established one.
Best for: drivers who want a mainstream car or crossover that balances driving enjoyment with a strong current dependability result.
4. Subaru: Consumer Reports’ overall 2025 brand winner
Subaru took first place in Consumer Reports’ 2025 overall brand report card, narrowly moving ahead of BMW. That is a meaningful result, but it should not be mislabeled as a pure reliability victory because Consumer Reports’ overall score also includes road-test performance, safety, and owner satisfaction.
In J.D. Power’s three-year dependability survey, Subaru scored 212 PP100, slightly worse than the 202 PP100 industry average. The difference illustrates why the two studies cannot be blended into one simple league table.

Subaru can still be a strong all-around choice, particularly for buyers who value its vehicle layout, standard all-wheel-drive availability on many models, and safety-oriented product philosophy. Pay close attention to the powertrain generation, infotainment revisions, and recall history of the exact vehicle.
Best for: buyers who value the broader Consumer Reports ownership picture and want to choose from Subaru’s lineup after checking model-level reliability.
5. Buick: J.D. Power’s mass-market surprise
Buick ranked second overall in J.D. Power’s 2025 table at 143 PP100, making it the highest-ranked mass-market brand in the study. That is a major result and deserves more attention than Buick often receives in reliability discussions.
Still, one study covering one ownership window cannot establish Buick’s lifetime reliability or repair costs. Model mix, platform age, powertrain choice, software, and owner maintenance all matter. A Buick with a mature platform and favorable model-level evidence may be a sensible purchase; a newly introduced or heavily redesigned vehicle deserves more caution regardless of the brand score.
Best for: shoppers looking for a comfortable mainstream vehicle and willing to investigate a specific Buick model rather than relying on the brand’s headline ranking.
6. Honda: credible, but not the 2025 statistical winner
Honda recorded 201 PP100 in J.D. Power’s 2025 study, slightly better than the 202 PP100 industry average. However, it ranked below Lexus, Buick, Mazda, and Toyota in that table.

Honda remains a reasonable shortlist brand when the specific vehicle has a mature powertrain, complete maintenance records, and favorable model-level evidence. The important editorial correction is not to call Honda the 2025 reliability winner solely because of its long-standing reputation.
Best for: buyers who find a well-documented, established Honda model that fits their needs and passes a vehicle-specific inspection.

Brand rankings are useful for narrowing the field, but model-level results are more actionable. J.D. Power identified the Toyota Avalon as the most dependable model overall. Its segment leaders included:
| Segment | 2025 J.D. Power leader |
|---|---|
| Compact car | Toyota Corolla |
| Midsize car | Toyota Camry |
| Compact SUV | Toyota RAV4 |
| Midsize premium SUV | Lexus GX |
| Midsize pickup | Toyota Tacoma |
| Minivan | Toyota Sienna |
These awards refer to 2022-model-year vehicles evaluated after three years of ownership. They are useful starting points, not proof that every later model year is equally dependable. A redesign, new engine, new transmission, hybrid-system change, or major infotainment update can alter the ownership experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to turn a brand ranking into a smart purchase
1. Identify the exact vehicle configuration
Before comparing reliability, write down the vehicle’s model year, generation, engine, transmission, drivetrain, trim, and whether it is a conventional hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric vehicle. “Toyota reliability” or “Subaru reliability” is too broad to make a purchase decision.
Give additional scrutiny to first-year redesigns, newly introduced engines, unfamiliar transmissions, new plug-in systems, and vehicles with major software or driver-assistance changes. These features may be worthwhile, but they introduce more components and systems that can generate problems.

Use the NHTSA recall lookup to search by vehicle identification number or license plate. Open safety recalls should be repaired free of charge by the manufacturer in the United States.
An open recall is not, by itself, proof that a brand is generally unreliable. Recalls are vehicle-specific safety campaigns. The practical questions are whether the particular vehicle is affected, whether the remedy is available, and whether the repair has been completed.
3. Review the vehicle’s history—but understand its limits
For a used car, a CARFAX vehicle history report may include title, odometer, lemon-history, total-loss, stolen or recovery, structural-damage, service, repair, usage, and recall information. However, CARFAX warns that not every event is reported. A clean report is helpful evidence, not a guarantee that the vehicle has never been damaged or poorly maintained.
Use the report to identify questions for the seller: unexplained mileage gaps, repeated auction sales, inconsistent ownership history, accident entries, branded titles, commercial or rental use, and missing service records.

4. Get an independent inspection before buying
The most valuable used-car reliability check is an independent pre-purchase inspection by a qualified technician who is not working for the seller. Ask the technician to inspect fluid leaks, cooling-system condition, suspension, brakes, tires, underbody damage, rust, battery condition, fault codes, and evidence of accident repair.

A history report and a test drive should accompany—not replace—the inspection. If the seller refuses a reasonable inspection, treat that as a serious warning sign.
5. Use an OBD scan as a screening step, not a diagnosis
An OBD2 scanner can help identify stored diagnostic trouble codes and may reveal emissions or check-engine problems before purchase. It is a useful screening device, particularly when a warning light is present or the dashboard appears unusually quiet.
It cannot perform a complete mechanical inspection. Codes can be cleared, readiness monitors can be reset, and inexpensive scanners may not communicate with every module, including advanced safety or hybrid systems. A professional scan and inspection remain necessary when the purchase decision depends on the result.

Low mileage is not automatically better than high mileage. Look for evidence that the owner followed the manufacturer’s service intervals, replaced fluids and filters when required, addressed warning lights promptly, and performed model-specific maintenance.
Compare the records with the manufacturer’s schedule for the exact engine and transmission. Missing records do not prove neglect, but they should reduce what you are willing to pay and increase the importance of an inspection.
7. Test the technology as carefully as the powertrain
During a test drive, pair a phone, test Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, operate the climate controls, check every camera and parking sensor, try the driver-assistance systems, inspect the instrument display, and verify that warning messages disappear after startup.
J.D. Power’s 2025 results show why this matters. A vehicle can drive well while still experiencing recurring infotainment, connectivity, display, or driver-assistance problems.

Final buying recommendations
- Want the clearest dependability leader? Start with Lexus, particularly an established model, while budgeting for premium-brand ownership costs.
- Want the safest mainstream starting point? Start with Toyota, then compare the exact model year and powertrain.
- Want a strong mainstream alternative? Mazda’s 161 PP100 result makes it especially worth considering.
- Value a broad ownership score including safety and satisfaction? Subaru led Consumer Reports’ 2025 overall brand report card, but check model-level reliability because its J.D. Power score was 212 PP100.
- Want to investigate an overlooked brand? Buick’s 143 PP100 result was the best among mass-market brands in J.D. Power’s study.
- Considering Honda? It remains credible, but choose based on the exact vehicle’s maturity and condition rather than historical reputation alone.
Even a dependable car can suffer a flat tire, dead battery, lockout, or mechanical failure. Drivers who want a separate response plan can compare a roadside assistance membership, but plan terms, prices, limits, and availability vary by provider, club, and geography.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Lexus the most reliable car brand in 2025?
Lexus is the strongest single answer for three-year dependability in the 2025 U.S. data. J.D. Power ranked it first with 140 problems per 100 vehicles, and Consumer Reports also placed it among the leaders for predicted new-car reliability. That does not mean every Lexus model or every 2025 vehicle will be trouble-free.
Is Subaru reliable even though it scored below average in J.D. Power’s study?
Yes, Subaru can still be a strong choice. Consumer Reports ranked Subaru first overall in its 2025 brand report card, which includes reliability, road-test performance, safety, and owner satisfaction. J.D. Power measures a different thing: reported problems in three-year-old vehicles. Subaru’s 212 PP100 was slightly worse than that study’s 202 PP100 industry average.
Is Toyota more reliable than Mazda in 2025?
The difference is extremely small in J.D. Power’s 2025 results: Mazda recorded 161 PP100 and Toyota 162 PP100. Mazda ranked second among mass-market brands and Toyota third. The better choice depends on the specific model, year, powertrain, condition, service history, and your ownership needs.
Do the 2025 reliability rankings apply directly to 2025 cars?
No. J.D. Power’s 2025 Vehicle Dependability Study evaluated original owners of 2022-model-year vehicles after three years. Consumer Reports combines current testing, survey information, and predicted reliability. A redesign, new engine, hybrid system, transmission, or software platform can change results from one model year to the next.
What is the best way to check a used car before buying it?
Check the VIN or license plate for open recalls through NHTSA, review a vehicle-history report, compare maintenance records with the manufacturer’s service schedule, arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection, and take a thorough test drive. An OBD2 scan can add useful information, but it cannot replace a professional inspection.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Lexus is the best-supported 2025 dependability leader, Toyota is the most defensible mainstream default, and Mazda is a close data-backed alternative. Subaru’s first-place Consumer Reports brand ranking is valuable but measures more than reliability, while Buick deserves attention after leading J.D. Power’s mass-market results. Whichever brand you choose, the exact model year, powertrain, recall record, maintenance history, and independent inspection matter more than the badge alone.
