It is a versatile folding utility bike at a checked price of $999, but it is not the right choice for everyone: the Ride1Up Portola offers stronger sale value, the Velotric Fold 1 adds equipment and capacity, and the lightweight Aventon Soltera 3 ADV and Ride1Up Roadster V3 are better for conventional city commuting.
For most buyers, the Lectric XP4 is the best budget electric bike to start with in 2026. At the checked price of $999, it combines folding storage, utility-bike practicality, a throttle, pedal assist, a 500Wh battery, and a claimed range of up to 50 miles. It is not the lightest option, though. Riders who want a lower sale price should consider the Ride1Up Portola; those who want more equipment and carrying capacity may prefer the Velotric Fold 1. For apartment dwellers and conventional-bike commuters, the lightweight Aventon Soltera 3 ADV or Ride1Up Roadster V3 makes more sense than any folding utility bike.
This guide treats “budget” as roughly under $1,500 before tax and optional accessories. Prices and stock were checked against current listings for August 2026 and can change, especially for clearance models.

Choose it if: price, folding storage, carrying utility, and versatility matter more than low weight.
Watch out for: folding does not mean easy to carry. Confirm the weight and battery configuration of the exact version you are buying, particularly if you will lift it up stairs or into a high vehicle cargo area.

The Ride1Up Portola is the most aggressive value on this list when its clearance promotion is still active. The checked price starts at $945 with the 10.4Ah battery and reaches $995 with the 13.4Ah battery. Ride1Up lists a folding frame, a 750W sustained geared hub motor, 28-mph pedal-assist speed, 20-mph throttle speed, two-piston hydraulic brakes, and ANSI/CAN/UL 2849 certification.
Battery choice is important: Ride1Up quotes approximately 20–40 miles for the 10.4Ah version and 30–50 miles for the 13.4Ah version, depending on rider weight, terrain, incline, and assist level. The Portola also has an unusually useful accessory ecosystem for its price, including a folding lock, front rack and basket, panniers, a passenger kit, and a starter bundle. Check the Ride1Up Portola listing for the current configuration and promotion.
Choose it if: you want a compact commuter or errand bike and the current sale price is more important than long-term price certainty.

Watch out for: “starting at” and clearance pricing can change quickly. Compare the battery size, accessories, shipping terms, and final checkout price rather than assuming every Portola listing costs $945.

The Velotric Fold 1 is the upgrade pick for buyers willing to spend more for a fuller equipment package. Its checked price was $1,299, discounted from $1,499. The manufacturer claims a 750W motor, 608Wh battery, up to 55 miles of range, 28-mph top speed, and a maximum load of 440 pounds. It also lists a two-year limited warranty and a 14-day trial. Current details are on the Velotric Fold 1 product page.
Available accessories include a suspension seatpost, front basket, rack-top bag, extra battery, mirrors, panniers, and passenger equipment. That makes the Fold 1 particularly attractive for riders who intend to use an e-bike as practical transportation rather than simply as a recreational bicycle.
Choose it if: you need substantial carrying capacity, prefer a larger battery, or place meaningful value on the longer stated warranty.
Watch out for: the 440-pound load rating does not mean every rider will receive identical acceleration, braking, handling, or range. A claimed 55-mile range also cannot be fairly compared with another bike’s number unless the manufacturers used comparable conditions.
Aventon Soltera 3 ADV: best lightweight city-bike alternative
The Aventon Soltera 3 ADV is the right answer for someone who does not actually need a folding utility bike. Aventon lists it at $1,499, with a 37-pound frame, maintenance-free Gates Carbon Belt Drive, up to 70 miles of claimed range, and a 540W peak motor. The January 2026 launch information also identifies a torque sensor and hydraulic disc brakes. Current pricing and specifications are available in Aventon’s electric road-bike collection.

- Reserve / rent / share bikes / scooters
- - Pause your ride to make stops along the way
- - No more traffic jam
- - Return your bike/scooters to any Location when done.
Its light weight should make it more manageable for apartment storage, stairs, and car racks than the folding utility models. The belt drive and single-speed configuration also emphasize low drivetrain maintenance and a simple urban riding experience.
Choose it if: you want an e-bike that feels closer to a normal bicycle and expect to ride mostly on paved city streets.
Watch out for: this is a nonfolding city bike. It offers less cargo flexibility and is not the natural choice for RV storage, frequent car transport, bulky errands, or carrying a passenger.

Ride1Up Roadster V3: best lightweight conventional commuter
The Ride1Up Roadster V3 is another alternative for riders who prioritize lower weight and a normal-bike appearance over folding and cargo capacity. Tom’s Guide selected it as its overall budget pick in a July 2026 guide after hands-on evaluation, reporting a 39-pound weight, a 20–40-mile estimated range, 28-mph assisted speed, 500W Mivice hub motor, and a $1,295 price. Those performance judgments should be understood as Tom’s Guide’s review findings, not as firsthand testing by this site.
Choose it if: you want a relatively light commuter with a restrained, conventional design.
Watch out for: its price is higher than the cheapest folding options, and its estimated range is narrower than some manufacturer claims for heavier utility bikes.

Which one should you buy?
Pick by use case, not motor wattage alone
- Lowest price and broadest utility: Lectric XP4.
- Best folding sale value: Ride1Up Portola, provided the clearance price remains available.
- More equipment and carrying capacity: Velotric Fold 1.
- Lightest city-bike approach: Aventon Soltera 3 ADV.
- Lightweight commuter feel with independent review support: Ride1Up Roadster V3.
Motor wattage alone will not tell you how suitable a bike is. Consider the frame design, actual weight, battery capacity and removability, riding position, cargo mounts, torque or cadence sensor, brakes, warranty, safety certification, dealer or service support, and whether the bike fits your body and storage situation. Consumer Reports’ electric-bike buying guide also recommends considering climate, terrain, local regulations, qualified safety certification, retailer support, fit, and money for upgrades.

Folding versus lightweight
The XP4, Portola, and Fold 1 fold smaller, which is valuable in an apartment, RV, closet, or car. But a folded bike can still be awkward and heavy to lift. The Soltera 3 ADV and Roadster V3 do not fold, yet their lower weights may make them easier to carry into a building or place on a suitable rack.
Ask two separate questions: Where will the bike be stored? and How often will I physically lift it? A folding bike solves the first problem better; a lightweight nonfolding bike often solves the second.
Range: treat the number as a ceiling, not a promise
Real-world distance varies with rider and cargo weight, hills, wind, temperature, tire pressure, battery age, stops, throttle use, and assist level. A rider on flat pavement using moderate pedal assist may approach a claimed figure, while a heavier rider climbing hills in cold weather may fall well short.
Battery capacity is a useful clue, but it is not the entire range story. The Portola’s official estimates, for example, change substantially between its 10.4Ah and 13.4Ah batteries. Build in a reserve rather than planning a commute that consumes the manufacturer’s maximum claim.

- Check local law: class definitions, maximum assisted speed, helmet rules, throttle restrictions, trail access, and licensing requirements vary by state and locality. Do not assume a bike is legal on every road, trail, or bike path.
- Look for electrical certification: Consumer Reports recommends certification by a qualified testing organization such as UL. UL 2849 concerns the e-bike electrical system; it is not a guarantee covering every mechanical or operational aspect of the complete bicycle.
- Charge correctly: use the supplied or manufacturer-approved charger and follow the battery-storage instructions. Never choose a replacement charger merely because its connector looks the same or its voltage appears similar.
- Wear and fit a helmet: NHTSA recommends helmet use and says a properly fitted helmet should sit level and low on the forehead, with straps forming a V under and slightly in front of the ears. Its bicycle-safety guidance also covers predictable riding, obeying signs and signals, traveling in the same direction as traffic, and using bike lanes where available.
Budget for the bike’s real ownership cost
The purchase price is only the beginning. Depending on the model and your use, you may need a properly fitted bicycle helmet, a folding bike lock or U-lock, lights, a rack, panniers, a basket, a phone mount, assembly, and eventual brake or tire service. Check accessory compatibility by exact model; a rack or passenger kit advertised for one folding frame may not fit another.
A lock is especially relevant because a folding e-bike is portable and valuable. A folding bike lock or U-lock can reduce everyday theft exposure, but no lock makes a bicycle theft-proof. Specialty e-bike insurance may also be worth researching as an ownership-cost category, although availability, coverage, geography, and terms must be verified independently before purchase.
Bottom line
Buy the Lectric XP4 if you want the most versatile low-price folding utility bike. Choose the Ride1Up Portola when its clearance pricing is live and you want strong value with battery and accessory choices. Spend more on the Velotric Fold 1 for a larger equipment package, higher stated load rating, and longer warranty. Choose the Aventon Soltera 3 ADV or Ride1Up Roadster V3 if low weight and a conventional city-bike feel matter more than folding storage and cargo capacity.
Before ordering, recheck the price, battery version, included equipment, warranty terms, certification language, and local e-bike rules. Product pages, inventory, and promotions can change after this August 2026 comparison.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best budget electric bike in 2026?
For most shoppers, the Lectric XP4 is the best budget electric bike because it combines a $999 checked price with folding storage, utility-bike practicality, throttle and pedal assist, and a claimed 50-mile range. The Ride1Up Portola is a stronger deal when its clearance pricing is available, while the Aventon Soltera 3 ADV is better for buyers who prioritize low weight over folding and cargo capacity.
What is the cheapest recommended budget e-bike?
The Ride1Up Portola had the lowest checked starting price at $945 during a clearance promotion. Its price is temporary, however, and varies with battery size, so buyers should confirm the current price and configuration before ordering.
Are folding electric bikes easy to carry?
No. Folding e-bikes generally store more easily, but utility-oriented folding models can still be heavy and awkward to lift. The Aventon Soltera 3 ADV and Ride1Up Roadster V3 are nonfolding but lighter conventional-bike alternatives.
How far can a budget electric bike really go?
No. Range depends on rider and cargo weight, terrain, wind, temperature, tire pressure, battery age, throttle use, and assist level. Manufacturer range figures should be treated as estimates rather than guaranteed travel distances.
The Bottom Line
Best overall value: Lectric XP4. Best sale-priced folder: Ride1Up Portola. Best feature-rich folder: Velotric Fold 1. Best lightweight city alternative: Aventon Soltera 3 ADV.
